I anchored news at CNN for seven years. State of the art. Major breaking stories and interviews with the leading newsmakers. Even an ACE Nomination.

But that's a far cry from how I first did the news.

I was just out of the Army and working for WAGA-TV, Atlanta in 1960. I presented a fifteen minute summary of news at 7-AM each weekday.

You were a one man band. You produced, wrote, edited film, and made the Polaroid rear projection slides. You even changed them lap. There was no crew. Just you and the director and one engineer. The engineer lined up two B&W TV cameras on you and then you were alone in the studio. You took all your cues from the monitor. There were no ear
pieces to wear.
