Stories from our guests

Tale #24

This is the response we received from Dr. Jack Annon, a pioneer in Hawaiian broadcasting, when we asked him for a tale:

Good grief, who can write an historic TV beginning in Hawaii with all those great people like Wayne Collins, the Edward R. Murrow of the Pacific, who memorized all his news without any such thing as a prompter; and Frank Valenti who created live baseball games out of teletypes, and Captain Jet (*me) who tried to inform the kids about real science and then led into Flash Gordon serials only to be kicked out by a guy named Granny Goose who was dating the bakery sponsor's daughter and played a role of fiction; or a Kini Popo who was on live for three hours every day from 6 to 9 on radio and television with no video tapes (when they were finally invented I spliced them with alcohol solvent and a razor blade); or all those other earth shaking events (in the sunrise show, with our first Shadow Stumper game we blew out about three telephone circuits with callers coming in, etc.). And all this in a couple of paragraphs!!!!

(Maybe I ought to just lend you my semi autographical book to read "Bring Me Giants" which covered that area and is only about 5oo pages, and was written before statehood when we called ourselves the 49th state),

Aloha,
Jack
