The First Series

Opening Titles

A masked scientist in a laboratory accidentally drops a test tube during an experiment...

The same scientist travels all over the world attending academic conferences...

He begins to feel ill and suddenly collapses in the street...

The series starts with Abby Grant listening to the radio. The news report details the current situation - the virus has killed millions of people all over the world...doctors are still searching for a cure...civil unrest...the spread of secondary disease...

Abby's husband contracts the sickness and subsequently dies. Abby cuts off her hair, packs a survival kit, burns the house down, and sets off in her Land Rover to search for her son who is away at boarding school.

Jenny is an office worker who's flatmate is a nurse. They live in central London. Her flatmate contracts the sickness and Jenny goes to the hospital to get help. A doctor friend tells her nothing can be done and advises her to flee the city!

Once her friend has died, Jenny follows the doctors advice and sets off into the night, inappropriately dressed in a bright blue fake-fur coat...

Greg arrives in a helicopter. He is an engineer who had been working abroad. He came home to find his wife, but she had died. He soon meets up with Jenny, who has made it out into the countryside, and together they find Abby. They all decide to stick together for the time being.

These are the 3 main characters of the first series. In later series Abby leaves to find her son, and the number of regular characters increased.

By this stage the sickness has wiped out most of it's victims, only those few who are immune, and who haven't contracted secondary illnesses remain.

Access to food and resources become major issues. Greg discovers how to get petrol from the filling stations without using electricity. Medicines are vital - disease is rife and there are no medical facilities. However, towns and villages have become extremely dangerous places - armed gangs and disease make the Survivors think of alternative sources. They are forced to consider a future where the technology and resources of the past are no longer available!

The Three happen upon a community of survivors who are trying to become self-sufficient. They are ruled by Charles - who has radical ideas about how the world can be repopulated...

Abby is constantly discovering snippets of information that maintain her belief that her son is still alive. However, she finally has to realize that her endless searching is not doing her any good. She agrees, temporarily, to set up a community with Greg and Jenny.

The Survivors community is set in a huge manor house. By this time The Three have acquired some hangers-on, who include two children, John and Lizzie, and a tramp.

The community survives several attacks upon it from rival groups, and the numbers gradually increase. The infamous Capital Punishment episode occurs at about this time.

As time goes by, the community becomes more successful, however Abby isn't happy - she hears new information concerning her son, and decides to ride into the sunset on a white stallion with a guy who has a large gun.
