A masked scientist in a laboratory accidentally drops a test tube during an experiment...

The same scientist travels all over the world attending academic conferences...

He begins to feel ill and suddenly collapses in the street...

The beautiful big house they had been living in burns down. They meet up with Charles who it now appears was actually a nice guy. They set up home on a new farm.

Greg and Jenny have a baby. Ruth (a medical student) joins the community and gets together with Paul who dies trying to bring back medicine from a town. The threat of other diseases becomes more of an issue in this series - all new arrivals have to go into quarantine.

A new arrival turns out to be a priest struggling with his faith, he finally sorts it out only to be killed by a couple of crazed villains. These same villains had earlier killed Doctor Who! (Ok, so it was actually Patrick Troughton making a guest appearance).

A group of youngsters decide to join the community. They initially include an ex-agricultural student who causes some friction, but also teaches them some much needed farming techniques. He leaves because he's too concerned with production (and has some personal problems). Charles (who is one step away from wearing flowers in his hair and worshiping the Mother Goddess), successfully argues that people shouldn't be treated as slaves, that they should have freedom and happiness.

The youngsters who remain include a temptress who is initially rather evil (but becomes responsible in time for the next series). She causes strife amongst the community, at one stage leading Pet to ask Greg to impregnate her so that Charles could have a child!

The series comes to an end with the arrival of a hot-air balloon. It appears that in Norway there is a hydro-electric power station that just needs people to run it. However there are no people because there is no food. They have come to England to get people, and in the meantime have mapped out the surviving communities. The prospect of trade and specialization appears and Greg heads off to save the world, leaving Jenny broken hearted.
