The Monkees - 1998 Australian Tour
Photos of The Monkees Performing in Australia
The Monkees, following their television series success in 1967, toured Australia in 1968. The foursome Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith disbanded in the early 70s to pursue their own careers. Davy Jones was a guest star in Australia for the TV Week, King of Pop awards in 1973. Mike Nesmith appeared at The Palais, Melbourne in 1977 where he recorded an LP Live At The Palais.
The Monkees re-united in 1986 to celebrate their 20th Anniversary from when they were first selected to play the roles of four zany musicians in the self-titled TV show. Peter and Davy toured Australia in 1986 and returned for a longer tour in 1987. In 1988, Micky joined Peter and Davy for another tour in which the threesome performed at top entertainment venues around Australia. Davy returned to Australia in 1991 to do a solo tour. A souvenir video was made by The Australian Monkeemaniacs Fan Club, Davy Jones Live In Australia. Son of Mike Nesmith, Jason visited Australia with the pop band Nancy Boy for the Woolmark Melbourne Fashion Festival earlier this year.
The Monkees brought out several CDs in the past decade including Then & Now: The Best of The Monkees and Pool It. Another three CDs called Missing Links Vol. 1, 2 & 3 included previously unreleased songs recorded in the early days of monkeemania. The four Monkees, including Mike Nesmith, rejoined in 1996 to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. They released another CD appropriately named Justus. This time the songs were both written and performed by The Monkees. Recently, Peter Tork and musician James Lee Stanley, produced two CDs entitled Stranger Things Have Happened and Two Man Band. Mike's latest CDs are called Tropical Campfires and The Garden. For a complete list of Monkees music send blank email to monkees-musicfaq@hooloovoo.com . The Monkees 30th Anniversary Tour commenced in America and moved to the UK early this year. Mike Nesmith joined the UK tour for a surprise reunion of the four Monkees as a complete band. A Monkees Documentary Hey, Hey, We're The Monkees and a Monkees Special made last year have been televised in America. The documentary is due to be released on video by Rhino on 18th November, 1997. A Melbourne radio station recently reported that The Monkees were expected to tour Australia, but no dates had been set. Mike Nesmith was special guest on the Evans & Co Midday Show 104.3 Gold FM on 27th May, 1997. He was asked about the possibility of The Monkees touring Australia. He said that he was presently writing a new Monkees movie and that a tour to coincide with its release would be a good thing.
Unfortunately The Monkees tour of Australia which was to commence in March, 1998 was cancelled. Watch this spot for 2000 update coming soon! Please note my new email account below. The rocketmail one no longer exists.
