Jacob's eyes widened with a mad flame as a black-clad figure slipped into the room. The stranger was unaware that anyone was in there until he heard what sounded like a growl coming from deep within Jacob's throat. The man's head bolted up as Jacob reached him, taking him by the arms and pulling him into the room. Jacob threw the stranger against the wall. Jesse and the others were standing by the door, obviously stunned. Jacob pinned the anonymous figure to the wall with his arm pressed hard against the man's throat.
"You," Jacob practically, "have a lot of nerve, y'know that? What you did ruined my family, and you have the gaul to return here? And while we're the subject of what you did to my family, I want to know exactly how you have treated my sister since I've been gone, you filthy slime-bucket."
"Jacob, who is that?" Jesse asked, frantic. "What did he do? When?" Jacob glowed once again with his raging anger. He reached up pulled off the ski mask the man was wearing. Jonny, who had come up behind Jesse, turned his face into a scowl at the recognition of who was before them.
"Robert," he spat. Jacob reached back and slammed his fist into Robert's stomach to make the young man cringe to an unmotionless position.
"So, tell me," he grabbed Robert's hair and pulled his face up, "do I really have to ask why my little sister's boyfriend knows? More over, do I have to ask why he obviously hates you so much?" Robert breathed in sharply.
"You --- ---- son of a -----. She was supposed to be mine. You...you couldn't stand the thought that your best friend had a crush on your little sister. If you hadn't been such an over-protective ---hole, this never would have happened." Jacob slammed Robert's head against the wall.
"Why don't you tell my family just what happened? Ey, ---hole? Tell my father and my mother just what it was that ended their marraige. Go on! Tell 'em!" Robert's face shook with fear and anger.
"I had some cousins. They were juvenile delinquents and would do anything a twenty dollar bill. I hired them to..." His eyes landed on Jesse's face. Her expression was stricken with horror and pain. Jacob kicked him to get him to go on. "I hired them to kill Jacob. To get him out of the way so that I could get to his sister without having to put up with him. But the bungled. The one shot they had, they missed. So they took him while he was still out and brought him to me. I told them to dump him in an alley as far from his home as possible. By the time he would have gotten back to home, we would all be gone." Jesse's face was filled with pain as she walked over to Robert's huddled form. "I'm sorry," he said very low. "I never really wanted to hurt him, but I couldn't stand the thought that he wouldn't let me be with you." She reached down and touched her hand to his cheek. Her eyes glazed over with hatred. She reached back and rammed a punch into his cheek.
"I can see my brother knew what he was doing," she said sharply. Robert's eyes were wide with what seemed like pleading.
"But..but, Jesse," he stammered, "I was just trying to be with you." She stood up next to Jonny. Jacob grabbed Robert's collar and pulled him up.
"Someone call the police," Jacob said over his shoulder. "It's time we put this freak behind bars."
Later....
Jesse looked at the clock on the wall. Five in the morning, and they were still awake. *Has it taken that long to get this all over with?* She looked at the others. Jonny was beat, but his eyes looked weary. Almost as if he were watching in case something happened. Dr. Quest was rubbing his temples, staring at the phone. Obviously debating whether or not he should call and check on Jenny and Hadji. Race and Estella were sitting together on the couch. Jesse watched as her mom's eyes would start to drift shut, and then snap wide again. Finally, her eyes rested on Jacob. He was the only one who didn't look whipped. She stood up and went plop down next to him, still having trouble with the thought that her brother was really there. Really alive. He smiled, though he seemed annoyed by the silence filling the room.
"So, what now?" he asked quietly, just loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Who knows?" replied Estella, trying to wipe the sleep from her eyes. "I mean, for the first time in eight years our family is together in one room."
"If you can really call it a family," Jesse said, staring at the floor. Race sighed.
"Then maybe," he started, "that's the first thing we should do." Everyone looked up at him, and Estella smiled as he kissed her forehead. "Jesse, Jacob, earlier your mother and I were talking. We had a lot to say. Particularly about how crazy we were acting when we divorced. It was wrong, and we were thinking that maybe tomorrow, after everyone's gotten some sleep, we could call up our lawyer and have him renew that license of ours." Jesse beamed, and Jacob smiled.
"You mean you're gonna get remarried?!" She asked, almost incredulously.
