Part 10
Everyone is in shock. No one can believe that a woman Marlena's age could actually be pregnant. Kate walks up to Marlena.
Kate: Oh, Marlena. This is wonderful! You're going to have a beautiful little child, I know it. I'm so happy for you.
Kate gives her a hug, and Laura comes over and does the same. She and Kate put aside their differences for the time being, and concentrate on Marlena. Marlena doesn't seem to think this pregnancy is good at all. All she can do is sob. She looks over at Roman. He is staring in her direction in disbelief. He still doesn't know it's John's child. Marlena rushes over to him.
Marlena: Roman, I know this is hurting you, but it--
Roman: Stop, Doc. Just hold on a minute. How the hell did this happen? Who's the father?
Marlena can't speak. All she can do is cry. She wondered why this had to happen now. This was supposed to be a happy day for her and John. Now their life was ruined. All their lives they were going to be raising children.
Now she looked around the room, and began to stare at John. He is still in shock. He's happy, but from his face you'd never know it. He steps forward, and then slowly walks over and sits down in the chair next to Marlena. She puts her hand on his. They don't have to say anything. Roman has already realized what's going on.
Marlena: Roman, I'm so sorry.
Roman: You're sorry? You're sorry? That's all you have to say? I thought the two of you had moved on. And John, how can you be unfaithful to a wonderful, sweet innocent woman like Kristen? How?
Marlena: She's NOT innocent Roman! She's a manipulative little bitİh! She works with Stefano! She's been helping him kidnap me all along! She only brought you back hoping it would break John and me up.
Marlena turns towards Kristen with a look that's enough to convey all her emotions. She gets up and walks to the center of the room. John tries to stop her, but she refuses. Kristen is devastated finding out Marlena is pregnant with John's child. She hasn't moved since Marlena announced it.
Marlena: How's it feel Kristen? Everything you've worked for for all these years, finally blows up in your face! You've used Roman for all this time to keep me away from John. You used an innocent, dying man. How could you be so insensative? I guess that's what happens to anyone related to Stefano. I don't usually take pleasure in hurting people. I certainly get no pleasure out of hurting Roman. And I'll admit, I'm not sure I want this child. But it would be worth having just to torment you. How's it feel to know that I'm giving him the child you never could?!
By the time Marlena's done, she has a look on her face that we've never seen before. She was so relieved after she said that that she actually stopped crying. Kristen was shocked to hear Marlena finally lash out at her. Kate and Laura are cheering marlena on. Marlena walks right up to Kristen and gets up in her face.
Marlena: You've lost Kristen. You've lost. John and I are going to have another baby, and now, there's nothing you can do to keep us apart.
Kristen: NO! I will not lose him! I won't! I'll do whatever I have to, but I will keep John!
Marlena: Give it up Kristen, you've already lost him. And when you go to jail, I'll take great pleasure in visiting you every so often.....I'm going to gloat and torment you the way you gloated and tormented me in that secret room. It feels wonderful to know that good, for once, has finally won out.
Kristen: Oh, don't get started on that good is going to win in the end crap Marlena! And you know what? You're too old to have a baby. This child will never make it. Your pregnancy will probably end in a couple of months. May as well save yourself the pain and have an abortion.
Marlena gets a look on her face. Kristen definitely hit a nerve. She hadn't thought about a miscarraige. She looked at John. He walked towards her and put his arm around her.
John: Excuse us a minute.
They walk out into the hall. He gives her a hug and kiss and tells her how wonderful it is. He's so happy that they're going to have a baby. He says don't listen to anything Kristen says. They embrace, and then Sami comes out.
Sami: Mom, I know that you and John are in love, and I'll accept that, but right now, I think you need to talk to Daddy. He's in there crying. He's trying not to let anyone see him cry, but he can't help it. He keeps talking about what a fool he was. Please, Mom, go talk to him.
Marlena: Oh, my! I have to see him John. I have to.
John: No, not yet. I think we should have Mike check you out first.
Marlena: I'm fine, I was checked out this morning.
John: I don't care, I want you checked out again. I'm not going to take any chances on the health of my child and the wonderful woman who's carrying it.
Marlena smiles. For a split second, she was happy. She can't remember the last time she's been able to smile. She says she promises she'll get checked out as soon as she talks to Roman. Eventually, Marlena is able to convince John to let her go, but he tells her not to stress herself too much.
Marlena: I won't. I promise.
She walks into Roman's room, and everyone knows they should leave. But Sami and John both listen at the door.....they can't resist.
Inside, Marlena walks up to him. He's been crying, but his tears have been dried. He stands up, and begins to walk towards her. He puts his hands on her shoulders and gazes into her eyes. He asks what went wrong.
Marlena: We just drifted apart Roman. It's Stefano's fault. But I can't stop feeling. And what I feel....is love...for John. I'm sorry. I know it hurts you. And because of that, it hurts me. But it's nothing I can control. I would have told you before, but Kristen had already filled your head with lies, and I couldn't tell a dying man that the woman he loved was already taken.
Roman: I shouldn't have gone on about how much I loved you. I shouldn't have. I know that must have been hard for you. I'm sorry.
Marlena: Don't apologize. Don't ever apologize for saying how you feel. Do you understand? If I had told John how I felt in the beginning, I would've been with John for a long time now. So don't ever apologize for telling someone how you feel. If I've learned nothing else from this mess of a life I've lived, I've learned that if you love someone, you should tell them.
Roman: Doc, I just don't understand how I could have been such a fool....believing you and John could stay away from each other. I've known all along your love was undying. So why did I believe Kristen?
Marlena: You believed because that's what you wanted to believe. You wanted to believe John and I weren't together....because our relationship hurt you so much. And I'm so sorry. But I couldn't keep my feelings bottled up inside anymore. I wish it could have been different. I wish I never had to hurt you. But I can't help how I feel, and I love John.
Roman: I know. I know you do. I just wish......I just wish Stefano Dimera could have left us alone. If he had, I would be with you right now.
Marlena: I'm not so sure Roman. I think that it was fate that brought John to me....he would have come either way. Roman, I know this hurts you, but I want you to be a part of this child's life. Please, please stay in Salem. I want you to be the child's Godfather.
Roman is shocked, but agrees. Tears begin to fill his eyes again, but he manages to hold them back.
Roman: Doc, please, I just need to ask you to do one last thing for me.
Marlena: Anything.
Roman: Just give me one last kiss. It's all I'll ever ask of you.
Marlena isn't sure. She doesn't say anything, but isn't sure she can do that. Before she has a chance to decide, Roman has already moved towards her. He gives her a tender, passionate kiss on the lips.....that to Marlena seems like an eternity, but to Roman seems like only a millisecond. When he finally pulls away, he realizes that to Marlena, it meant nothing. Then he knows for sure....that he has lost her.
Roman: Thankyou Doc. I'll remember this moment for the rest of my life.....as the moment I lost the most wonderful woman in the world.
Marlena can't help crying when she hears that....and doesn't know what to say, so she turns to leave. As she's walking towards the door, she feels dizzy, stops, and collapses.
Marlena is lying on the floor unconcious. John and Roman both rush to her side, and Sami calls for Mike.
John: Doc! Doc, common, wake up!
Roman and John are frantic, each realizing how strong the other's love for her really is. Mike comes into the room.
Mike: I called an ambulance.
He kneels down beside her and checks her pulse. He then turns to John and Roman. From his face they can tell it's not good news.
Mike: I'm sorry John, if Marlena makes it, she'll probably lose the baby.
John is very upset. He's so scared that something may happen to her. Just then, the paramedics arrive. They put Marlena on a stretcher and John, Roman, and Mike all get in the ambulance and go to the hospital. Sami, Austin, and Carrie are very worried, and decide to go to the hospital together.
At the hospital, Mike comes out of Marlena's room. John immediately rushes over to him, anxious to hear what's going on.
John: So, what's the word?
Mike: It's not good John. When she fell she hit her head. We don't know how serious the injury is. She also has some internal bleeding. I'm going to need for anyone with her blood type to donate blood.
Sami and Austin and Carrie volunteer.
Mike: I'll go check the records and see if your blood types match. I'll be back in a minute.
Mike heads for the records room. Sami gets a concerned look on her face. "Nah, he'll never check Will's blood type," she thought to herself.
Sami: Austin, I need some air. I'll come right back, but I need to take a walk.
Austin: I don't want you out walking alone, I'll go with you.
Sami: That's so sweet of you Austin. You're so caring and loving. I can't wait to marry you.
Carrie is disgusted, and goes looking for Mike. Meanwhile, Mike is in the records room looking at files.
Mike: Alright, Marlena is type A blood. Let's check Sami and Austin first.
He enters in the last name Reed. Three names come up:
Mike double-clicks on Austin's name. Austin is type B. He knows he's not a match. Then he aims the mouse at Sami's name, but it slips and he gets Will's file instead. He notices Will is type AB.
Mike: That's odd. Oh well, Sami must be AB. Well, just to be sure...
He checks Sami's file. She's type A. Mike can't believe it. He wants Carrie to be happy, but if he lets out the secret about Will's blood type, he knows that he'll lose her.
Mike: I'll just have to keep quiet for now. Maybe by the time everyone finds out, Carrie and I will already be married.
He checks Carrie's blood type. She doesn't match either. He walks out and right into Carrie.
Mike: Carrie, hi. Sami is the only one that matches Marlena's blood type.
Carrie: That's too bad. So there's nothing I can do to help her?
Mike: You can go see her. Talk to her, maybe she'll respond to your voice.
Carrie: Alright. I'll do that. Mike, you're my best friend, you know that?
Mike: You're mine. That's the way it should be.
He thinks to himself, "We should be a lot more than friends Carrie."
He takes Carrie out to Marlena's room. When they get there, they find Sami and Austin walking in arm in arm. Carrie can't stand it. Sami gets a smirk on her face, just for a split second. Then it turns into the "Sweet Sami" smile.
Mike: Sami, you're the only one who matches you're mom's blood type. We need to draw blood immediately.
Sami: Alright. Anything to help my mom.
Believe it or not, Sami does mean that. She's genuinely concerned about her mom. Even though they didn't always get along, since she had the accident, her and her mom had been closer. She didn't want anything to spoil it now. Mike lead her to a little room where they were going to draw blood. He told one of the nurses to draw blood and went to attend to Marlena.
Meanwhile, John is in Marlena's room. He's sitting in a chair by her bed holding her hand. As he begins to talk to her Roman walks in. John doesn't notice him.
John: Doc, we've been through so much. Too much for you to die on me now. God, I love you more than anything in this world. I'd move Heaven and Earth to save you right now....to save our child. I love you too much to let you go. I already had to be with Isabella when she passed away. Please, God, please don't make me go through this again. I need you Doc. You're my life. I can't live without you.
Marlena still does not wake up. Roman, who's been listening at the door, walks in the room and pulls up a chair next to John.
Roman: John, I know you love Marlena very much. And, I think you love her more than I could've even known. I'm so sorry about what you went through with Isabella, and what you're going through now. I think I finally understand.
John: Thankyou. But right now, I need to concentrate on her. Will you stay with her for a while? I'm going down to the chapel.
Roman: Of course.
John walks out and heads down to the chapel. In the chapel, he breaks down and starts crying. Then he becomes angry....at Kristen, at Stefano, and even for a moment at Roman. When he realizes that getting mad won't help anything, he tries to supress his feelings of anger. He gets down on his knees and prays to God.
John: God, I know I haven't been the best Christian. I've done things that were wrong, but I've always tried to live a good life. I wanted to be a good Christian, and every day I strive towards that. God, I'm begging you, Marlena is the most wonderful thing in my life now. I've waited so long to be with her. I thought it would never happen, but when it did, I was happier than I've ever been before. And then to find out she's carrying my child, well, that was icing on the cake. Please, God, I love them both so much. And even though I've only known about this child for a couple of hours, I already love it with all my heart. Please God, don't take away the love of my life, and the child she was going to give me. I can't live without them.
John turns around when someone else enters the chapel. It's Mike. He looks at John, and John starts crying and getting very angry. Mike tries to calm him down. Needless to say, John thinks Marlena is dead.
Mike: John, John, calm down.
John: Calm down? How can you tell me to calm down when the mother of my child just died?
Mike: Marlena's not dead. Why would you think that?
John: She's not? Just, the look on your face, I thought...
Mike: No, I just have some heavy stuff on my mind. I actually came to bring you some news.
John: What kind of news?
Mike: It's a miracle John. It couldn't possibly be anything less than a miracle.
John: Is Doc alright?
Mike: She's more than alright. The internal bleeding has stopped, the baby seems to be fine, and she's awake. You can go see her now.
John says nothinng but runs to the staircase and up the steps as fast as he can. When he gets to her room, Carrie, Sami, and Austin are in there. John slows down, and as he walks up to her neither can do anything but gaze into the other's eyes.
John: You had me so scared Doc.
Marlena: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to you know.
John: I know. I just thank God for this miracle. I don't think I could've lived without you. I love you too much.
Sami thinks she's going to be sick, but she hides it and makes another one of those "Sweet Sami I'm So Happy for You" faces. It apparently works on everyone except Carrie.
Marlena: I love you too John. Nothing in the world could ever take away that love.
Mike walks into the room.
John: Mike, when do you think she'll be released?
Mike: Well, there don't seem to be any problems right now, but we need to keep her overnight just for observation. She can go home tomorrow.
John: Thanks Mike. (he turns to Marlena) Doc, there is nothing in this world I'd rather do when you're well than take you to St. Luke's and make you my wife. So has your answer changed from before? Will you marry me?
Marlena: Of course I'll marry you John! I love you, and I'll always love you. And I want nothing more than to marry you.
John leans over and kisses her forehead. Sami interrupts them. In order to really look like she likes the idea of her mom and John, she decides to put on another sweetheart act....plus as an added bonus she can drive Carrie nuts.
Sami: Mom, this is great! I know, why don't you and John have a double wedding with Austin and me?
Marlena is so happy Sami has accepted her relationship with John. She smiles and says that's a wonderful idea. Carrie runs out into the waiting room, where Mike's been sitting so he wouldn't disturb the family. Carrie and Mike hug, and she says she can't stand it. She just wishes she had some way to prove Sami's memory was back. Mike says nothing. He's unsure of what to do, but decides not to say anything. He says he'll take her home, and Sami and Austin head out too. John of course, stays with Marlena, and Roman insists on doing the same.
It's a new day in Salem and John is getting ready to bring Marlena home from the hospital. Mike tells her if she has any problems to call immediately, because there could be a miscarraige. She says alright, and John drives her home to the penthouse. When they arrive, Susan walks downstairs.
Susan: Dr. Marlena Evans, where have you been?
Marlena: I've been in the hospital Susan, no one told you?
Susan: No they sure didn't Dr. Marlena Evans, why were you in the hospital?
Marlena: Well, Susan, John and I are going to have a baby, and there was a little problem.
Susan: But the baby's alright?
Marlena: Yes, the baby's fine now.
Susan: That's wonderful Dr. Evans. Now Elvis can have another li'l playmate.
Marlena laughs, and she's glad Susan's happy. She and John head up to her room, where he tells her she has to take a nap.
Marlena: John, I'm fine.
John: That's what you said before and Sami had to give blood less than an hour later. I'm not taking no for an answer, you need to get some rest.
Marlena: I love you.
John: And I love you, and our children. Doc, Belle is all I ever could have asked for in a daughter. She's smart, funny, and she's beautiful, just like her mother.
Marlena: John smiles, and then tells her to get some sleep. She lies down on their bed and gets comfortable. John lies down next to her, and holds her in his arms as they sleep. He can't believe how lucky he is. "Thankyou God," he thinks to himself.
Later that evening Sami and Austin show up. Susan answers the door.
Susan: Hey there Sami girl, and Mr. Austin Reed. Common in.
Austin: John and Marlena come downstairs and say hello, sit down, all the small talk stuff.
Marlena: Sami, I'm so happy for you and Austin. I know you haven't always had the happiest times of anyone I know. You deserve to be happy for once.
Sami: Thankyou Mom. So, when do we all want to get married?
Marlena: As soon as possible! Sami: How about tomorrow?
Marlena: Sounds fine to me. I can't wait.
John: Neither can I. So if we're sure, then I'll call the Salem Inn and get myself a room tonight, we wouldn't want any bad luck, would we?
Austin: Don't get a hotel John....you can stay with me. Sami, why don't you stay with Marlena tonight?
Sami: Alright. Mom and I can stay up late thinking about our wonderful soon-to-be husbands and doing the girl talk thing. Remember when we used to do that Mom?
Marlena: Sami: Well, we did that ever since I was really little Mom, don't you remember?
Marlena: Yes, but I just was wondering if you remembered the last four years.
Sami: No, still nothing, except the affair, but that was at the very beginning of the time frame that I lost, and it started to come back a long time ago. I haven't remembered anything since that.
Marlena: I'm sorry Sami. I shouldn't have assumed anything about you. It's just hard sometimes for people who knew you during that time to remember what a nice person you are now. Forgive me?
Sami: Of course!
John calls Caroline and Shawn, and they call everyone else in Salem and tell them the wedding is tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Mike is alone in his apartment.
Mike: What do I do? If I tell everyone Will isn't Austin's son, then I'll lose Carrie. But I love her so much, I just want her to be happy. If Austin makes her happy, she should be with him, right?
He can't make up his mind. But finally he decides that he'll keep his mouth shut, that Austin is the only father Will has ever known, and he wouldn't want to leave emotional scars on that little boy anyway.
Carrie shows up at his door. Mike lets her in and she says they need to talk.
Carrie: Mike, I can't stand this anymore. I love Austin, but he obviously doesn't love me. And I can't stand watching Sami throw it in my face. You have to help me prove her memory's back. I know there's something out there that'll prove it, but what?
Mike: I wish I could help you, but I can't.
Carrie: I'm sorry Mike, I shouldn't be whining about Austin to you. That part of my life is over, it's just that I don't want to let Sami do this to me.
Mike: I understand that, but I don't think we have any choice anymore Carrie.
Carrie: Maybe you're right. And if nothing turns up by tomorrow, then she really will have won.
Mike hugs her, and they look into each other's eyes, when Carrie pulls away and says she has to go. She'll see him tomorrow.
