Sami and Austin - Part XIV

Part XIV

Sami's worst fears were coming true. She had lost Austin thanks to Kate and Victor. And now Will was sick. She just prayed he wouldn't need surgery. If he did, his blood type would be revealed and everyone would know Lucas was his father. She listened anxiously as Mike came back and explained Will's condition. Surgery, she thought to herself. Oh no, what do I do now? She barely heard Mike as he asked them to donate blood. How was she going to keep them from finding out? She heard the voices around her but they were coming from far away. She felt hot and lightheaded. She didn't even hear Marlena as she fainted in her chair.

"Sami!"

Everyone turned from Mike when Sami fainted. Mike and Marlena stretched her out across the chairs in the waiting area. "Mike, is she alright?"

"She's fine. She just fainted. Why don't you go ahead and donate blood", he said to Austin. "Lucas and Carrie should go to. Will is their nephew, they might be a match."

Austin signed the consent form the nurse had given him and looked at Mike. "Come and get me if there's any change with Will."

"I will. It won't take very long. Will's stable right now."

Carrie took Austin's hand. "Come on. We'll be back soon."

"I'll bring Sami as soon as she comes to", Marlena worried that all this might be too much for Sami. Losing Austin and finding out Will needed surgery, she hoped her daughter was strong enough to get through this.

Lucas hung back. He wondered at Sami's reaction to Will needing surgery. She had been acting strangely all night, even before she had been exposed. Something was going on with her. He followed Austin and Carrie to donate blood for his nephew.

By the time Marlena had brought Sami around everyone was gone. "What happened?"

"You fainted. Are you alright?"

"I think so. Where is everybody?", Sami didn't know what to do. She had to find a way to keep them from finding out the truth about Will.

"They went to donate blood for Will. I'm taking you to do the same as soon as you're up to it."

Sami got back into her chair with Marlena's help. What was she going to do? Was it already to late? She couldn't believe she had fainted. "How long was I out?"

"Just a few minutes. Are you feeling better now? Do you think you're up to donating blood?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine." Please God, let me be wrong, she prayed. Let Austin be Will's father. I'll lose him forever if he isn't.

As Marlena and Sami arrived to donate Austin and Carrie were leaving and Lucas was just finishing up. "Are you alright Sami?" Carrie was really worried about her sister.

"As if you cared. You got what you wanted."

"Now isn't the time", Marlena said firmly. "Sami, forget your anger for now. We have to concentrate on Will."

"I'm sorry mom. You're right." Sami was watching the lab techs. They were taking Austin, Carrie, and Lucas' blood to be tested. There was nothing she could do now. If only I hadn't fainted, she thought. I might have been able to do something if I had more time.

They all left as Sami and Marlena were donating blood. Lucas wondered what Sami was up to. He followed Carrie and Austin back to Will's trauma room. Mike was waiting for them. "Will is still stable", he told Austin. "But we need to get him to surgery soon. I'm going down to the lab to check on the blood tests."

"Ok. Is there anything else we can do?"

"At the moment, all you can do is wait. I'm sorry", Mike wanted to tell them something, anything, to make them feel better but he couldn't.

"Mike, I know you'll help my son. I just wish I could do more."

Mike walked away as Carrie hugged Austin. He wished he could be happier for them. Carrie is such a great girl, he thought. She deserves to be happy. I just wish I could have... He stopped himself. There was no point in going there and he had to think about Will now.

Lucas was watching Carrie. She really loves him, he thought. Why can't she love me like that? He walked over to them. "Austin, I'm really sorry. I know Will is going to be alright."

"Lucas, I know you love Will. I was really hoping we could get closer. I wanted us to finally be brothers. But I just don't understand you."

Lucas couldn't say anything. He looked at Carrie and went back to his seat. He thought about everything he and Sami had done. Had he made the wrong choice? He looked up as he heard Kate's voice.

"Austin, how's Will?"

"He's fine, but he's going to need surgery", Austin explained Will's condition to Kate as best he could.

"Oh honey. Is there anything I can do? I can fly in a specialist..."

"Mom, Mike is going to do the surgery. I trust him."

"Alright", Kate went over to Lucas. "How are you doing?"

"Not now mom."

"Lucas, we really need to talk about this."

"You're right. We do need to talk. But I'm not ready to talk to you yet."

"Ok, I'll give you some time."

When Sami and Marlena returned everyone had arrived. Sami felt the irony of the situation. Her entire family was here to support her. It's only fitting, she thought to herself. They had all been there to witness Kate and Victor exposing her and now they would witness as Mike finished the job. She barely heard their words as they tried to console her and tell her Will would be alright.

Lucas couldn't sit still any longer. He decided to take a walk. He had too much going through his mind. He had been watching Carrie and Austin and realized how much they loved each other. He needed to think. Nobody noticed him leave.

Sami tried to talk to Austin but he wouldn't leave Carrie's side. Austin should be comforting me, she thought. She wanted to lash out but she couldn't. All she had now was her mother and her son. She had to find a way. Suddenly it hit her. Jamie works at the hospital now. Jamie could help her. She asked one of the nurses to find her.

Carrie couldn't help feeling sorry for Sami. "Maybe you should say something to her Austin."

"I can't. She's done so much to hurt us. I know she loves Will and she is a good mother but I can't let her think she can use this to hold on to me. She has to learn to accept that we are together."

"You're right. Sami will do anything, even use this crisis, to hold on to you. I just wish there was something we could do. She just looks so..."

"I know. Part of me wants to comfort her but the other part of me knows it would be a mistake. She would take it as a sign that I have feelings for her."

"I'm so glad this whole mess with her is over. I just wish that Will wasn't sick. I'm so angry at Sami for what she's done, but I wouldn't have wished this on anyone."

"I love you so much. I'm glad this mess is over too. I'm so sorry for everything I've done to hurt you. None of this was fair to you. I know I jumped the gun earlier when I told Mickey we wanted to be married. I didn't even ask you how you felt about it."

"You don't have to ask. I love you. If we could, I'd marry you tomorrow. I was afraid you wouldn't be able to forgive me for not telling you what Kate and I were up to."

"There's nothing to forgive. I've been a blind fool. I wouldn't have believed Sami was faking it if I hadn't heard Sami say it herself on those tapes. She really fooled me with her "reformed" act. I feel so stupid right now. After everything she's done, everything I know she's capable of, I still believed she had changed."

"Don't feel that way Austin. I fell for it too. If it hadn't been for Kate I wouldn't have realized Sami was faking. She is a good actress."

"Mom. I can't believe Sami was blackmailing her. Oh man... what a night."

"I know Mike can help Will."

"Me too. I just wish this wasn't happening. We should be celebrating right now. You, me, and Will."

"What should we be doing?" Carrie wanted to take Austin's mind off of worrying.

"We should be home now playing with Will. You know, he just loves that tricycle Lucas bought for him. You should see him ride it around the apartment. It's just so cute", Austin stopped and looked at Carrie. "I know what you're doing."

Carrie couldn't help smiling. "Is is working?"

"Almost. I forgot to worry for a minute. What would I do without you?"

"That's something you'll never have to worry about." Carrie tried to stand up but got dizzy. She sat back down and leaned against Austin.

"Carrie, are you sure you're alright? That's the second time you've gotten dizzy."

"I think I'm just hungry. I haven't eaten much today and we've had a lot of excitement."

Marlena came over to Carrie. "Honey, maybe you should let one of the doctors check you out."

"Marlena, I'm fine. We're here for Will now."

Austin pulled Carrie close to him. "We'll do it your way for now but if this happens again..."

"I know. As soon as they take Will to surgery I'll get something to eat. If I don't feel better after that I'll get one of the doctors to check me out. Ok?"

Austin held her tight. "You are so stubborn. I'm taking you to get something to eat myself as soon as we know something."

Carrie smiled and hugged Austin back. "You've got enough to worry about. I'm fine."

Sami felt her anger grow as she watched them. She had wanted to repair her relationship with Carrie. That was over. She would never forgive Carrie for what she had done tonight. She knew Carrie had helped Kate. You'll pay for this Carrie, she thought. You think it's over, but Austin is mine and I will never let him go. She started when Jamie came up behind her.

"Sami, I heard about Will. I'm so sorry."

"Will is going to be fine. Mike said the surgery will correct the defect and he'll be fine. That's not why I asked them to find you."

"What do you want?"

Sami looked around to make sure nobody could hear them. "You know what I want. If they try to match Austin and Will's blood types they'll find out Austin isn't his father."

"There's not much you can do about that Sami. They've already taken the blood to the lab."

"You're right. There's nothing I can do. But there's something you can do."

"Sami, I can't do anything."

"Yes, you can. I want you to switch Austin and Lucas' blood. If they think that Lucas' blood is Austin's they'll never question Will's paternity."

"Sami, that is so dangerous. What if they need more blood?"

"They won't. We all donated enough blood for the surgery just in case. Please Jamie."

"Sami, Austin's blood type is on file here. They'll know something is wrong."

"No, they won't. They're not going to go through his file to double check his blood type. They're just going to match it to Will's. When they have a match they'll send the blood to be used in the surgery. They have to think it's Austin's blood."

"Sami, you're wrong about this. This is dangerous and it could cost you your son' life."

"Jamie, I've thought this through. As long as you switch the names on all the blood donated by Austin and Lucas my son will be fine and he'll keep the only father he's ever known."

"I'm not promising anything Sami. But I will go down to the lab and see if they've started testing Austin's blood yet."

"Thank you Jamie."

"Don't thank me Sami. If they've started the tests there's nothing I can do."

Sami prayed that Jamie would make it to the lab before they tested Austin or Lucas' blood.

Lucas wandered around the hospital. He hadn't been paying attention and was surprised to find himself at the lab. He saw Mike inside and he didn't look happy. He hoped they hadn't found something else wrong with Will. He moved closer to the door so he could hear.

"I want you to run the test again", he was telling the lab tech.

"I already did. I ran the test three times and the results were the same."

"Oh man, as if this wasn't bad enough. Have you tested all the specimens?"

"Just Sami and Austin's so far. When the discrepancy showed up I ran his again to make sure."

"Ok. Run the test on the other specimens that were donated. We have to find a match for Will so we can get him into surgery."

"What are you going to do?"

"I have to go tell this to the family."

Lucas moved quickly as Mike left the lab so he wouldn't be seen. He tried to make some sense out of what he had heard. They had tested Austin and Sami's blood and neither matched Will? How was that possible? He knew how it was possible. He saw himself and Sami making love at Titan. "Sami, you little...", he started to say out loud. She had lied to him. He had asked her if the baby was Austin's and she had lied to him. He paced around the hallway. Maybe she didn't know. He thought about how strange she had been acting tonight. He was forgetting something. What was it? The blood type! Sami had been very interested in learning his blood type tonight. She knew Will wasn't Austin's son. "Will is my son?", he said to himself. He had always felt so close to Will. Now I know why, he thought. Will is my son. As happy as he was to find out he had a son he realized he faced a dilemma. If he told them Will was his son then he would lose Carrie forever. If he didn't tell them then he was risking his son's life. They'll find out anyway, he thought. When they test my blood it will match. But how long will it take for them to find that out? Would it take too long? If I tell them now they can test my blood immediately and get Will into surgery. And he would have the chance and keeping Carrie's friendship. He started back toward the trauma room still unsure of himself.

Jamie had also witnessed Mike's conversation with the lab tech. I knew this wouldn't work, she thought. There's nothing anybody can do now. She went to find Sami.

Austin was pacing around the waiting area. "What's taking so long?"

"I don't know", Carrie tried to get him to sit but he kept pacing. "Here comes Mike."

"Mike, what's taking so long? I thought you needed to get Will into surgery as soon as you could?"

"We do. But we have a problem."

Sami could feel the color draining from her face. She saw Jamie waving at her frantically but she didn't need to know what had happened. Jamie had been too late.

Austin felt his insides tighten up. "What kind of a problem?"

Mike tried to find a way to say this without hurting Austin. "A problem with the blood tests. So far they've tested yours and Sami's blood. They haven't gotten to the others yet."

"So what's the problem?"

"Sami's blood doesn't match Will's", Mike wished he didn't have to do this.

"Ok, then just use mine."

"We can't... I don't know how to say this."

Carrie started to worry. "Mike, is there something wrong with Austin? Is that why you can't use his blood?"

"No, Austin you're fine. That's not the problem. The problem is that Austin's blood doesn't match either."

Austin felt like the wind had been knocked out of him. "That's not possible. My blood doesn't match? Are you sure?"

"We ran the test three times. It doesn't match. You have type O blood and Sami has type A. Will has type B. I'm sorry Austin, there's just no way that you could be Will's father."

Austin felt the rage build up in him. He turned to Sami but he couldn't speak. He just stared at her, the hate filling him up inside.

Sami couldn't bear the look in Austin's eyes. "Austin, I..."

Austin found his voice. "How could you do this to me? You let me think he was my son! You never even mentioned the possibility he could be someone else's. What were you thinking?"

"Austin, please I..."

"Why can't you ever tell me the truth? You say you love me but you can't even be honest with me. All you've ever done is lie to me and try to manipulate me. You used that little boy to try and hold on to me! What kind of person are you?"

Marlena stood beside Sami. "Austin, give Sami a chance to speak. We have to find out who Will's father is so we can get blood for the surgery."

"You're right Marlena. I'm sorry. I'm just so...angry."

"I know you are. But we have to put all that aside now. We can deal with it later. We have to think of Will."

Carrie couldn't believe what was happening. All this time, she thought. I lost all this time with Austin for nothing. "Sami, who is Will's father?"

The tears rolled down Sami's face. She didn't know what to do. She had to find a way to make Austin understand. "Austin..."

Austin couldn't take it. "Sami, who is Will's father?"

Lucas had seen the whole thing. Part of him had hoped Sami would tell the truth but he knew she wouldn't. He knew what he had to do.

Mike pulled Austin to the side and knelt down by Sami. "Sami, I know you're upset but we have to know who the father is. Will is getting weaker we have to get him into surgery."

Sami couldn't speak. She opened her mouth but nothing came out. She saw Lucas and realized that he knew. She could tell by the way he was looking at her.

Lucas stepped forward. "Sami, I can't believe you did this to me."

Everyone looked at Lucas. Austin wasn't sure what he was hearing. "Lucas, are you saying..."

"Yes, I am. Will is my son."
