Rosslare Harbour Development well under way

June 1992 A large hole in the sea has been created at the Euro port of Rosslare Harbour to facilitate blasting operations to deepen the port to 7.5 meters to enable the Harbour to cater for the Jumbo ferries of the future. A large area was pumped dry to allow the blasting of the sea bed to take place on dry land. This work was part of the first phase of a new £18.8m development plan for the Euro Port of Rosslare Harbour being carried out by the Finnish marine contractors, Haka Ltd. Irish Rail the Port Authority, funded the development from the company`s own resources with grant aid from the EC., that phase cost £6.5m. Other work carried out at that time was a 50 metre extension to the second berth on the west Pier, this work was done to improve facilities for Sealink`s MV Felicity Car Ferry Ship.

2,000 tons of rock blasted at Rosslare Port

1992 The first Phase of a new £18m development plan for Rosslare Harbour was launched when the then Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications Mrs Maire Geoghegan Quinn detonated an underwater blast of 400kilos of commercial explosive to remove 2,000 tons of rock which were blocking the access to the new ferry berts being created at the Port of Rosslare. The Blasting in the Port, and the dredging and reclamation works were part of phase 1 of the £18.8m development plan for the Port of Rosslare involing the dreging of No1 Berth to a depth of 7.5 metres, this will enable the Port to cater for the new jumbo car ferry`s ships. The dredging contractors for phase 1 was Haka Ltd., one of the largest construction compananies in Scandanavia. All of the dredged material was used to reclaim 30 acres of land from the sea, this reclaim land will be used for further development of the port. There is now a new Freight Compound for Freight Trailers, and a new Compound for New Import Trade Cars, built on this reclaim land.
