2,000 tons of rock blasted at Rosslare Port

1992 The first Phase of a new £18m development plan for Rosslare Harbour was launched when the then Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications Mrs Maire Geoghegan Quinn detonated an underwater blast of 400kilos of commercial explosive to remove 2,000 tons of rock which were blocking the access to the new ferry berts being created at the Port of Rosslare. The Blasting in the Port, and the dredging and reclamation works were part of phase 1 of the £18.8m development plan for the Port of Rosslare involing the dreging of No1 Berth to a depth of 7.5 metres, this will enable the Port to cater for the new jumbo car ferry`s ships. The dredging contractors for phase 1 was Haka Ltd., one of the largest construction compananies in Scandanavia. All of the dredged material was used to reclaim 30 acres of land from the sea, this reclaim land will be used for further development of the port. There is now a new Freight Compound for Freight Trailers, and a new Compound for New Import Trade Cars, built on this reclaim land.
