The Voltaic
1896 A SERVICE FROM ROSSLARE HARBOUR TO BRISTOL
August 26, 1896 was the date of this historic opening of this service
and the ship to operate it was the Voltaic. The Voltaic was a 612 ton
steamer and was built by a company call McNAB & Co, Greenock in the year
1868. The engine was 170 horse power and the ship was 210 feet long. The
Voltaic operated out of Rosslare Harbour for four years. The ship went
aground at Avonmouth soon after departing from Bristol. The service at
Rosslare Harbour had to be suspended while she went for repaires. The
Voltaic was sold in April 1900 and the service from Rosslare Harbour was
suspended. In 1901 the Voltaic was sold to a Russian company and was
lost in the first World War in 1917.
