24 March 1968 Airliner Disappears South East of Rosslare Harbour

On the 24 March 1968 a Viscount Airliner owen by Air Lingus on a flight from Cork to London with 61 people on board disappeared into the sea about 8 miles south-east of Rosslare Harbour. The Viscount named St Phelim, with Id number 803 EI-AOM took off from Cork Airport at 11.30 am local time with 57 passengers and a crew of four. The plane passed along the south coast and maintained radio contact with Shannon Control. At 11.50 the flight was told to change to London Airway Frequency. The Transport and Power stated at 11.58 am The London Radar Intercepted a call Echo India Alpha Oscar Mick to you, the call was interpreted as Five Thousand feet descending spinning rapidly, this call was also heard by another airliner en route to Bristol from Dublin. After the crash the area was search off the coast of Rosslare Harbour. Lifeboats from Fishguard and Kilmore were launched and also from the Port of Rosslare Harbour. On monday after the crash a British ship the Hardy recovered bodies about six miles north of Tuskar Rock Lighthouse. Later on in the day the the Hardy went into Rosslare Harbour with some wreckage and bodies. In the Port of Rosslare Harbour a search headquarters were established, also British naval ships were based at Rosslare Harbour. They were no survivors and the cause of the crash will probably never be known.
