“Blondes sure are easy on the eyes,” says actress Alanna Ubach. “I think blonde hair on women is just beautiful. But I’m a brunette and if I ever dyed my hair blonde, I think I would look absolutely ridiculous. I would look like an Armenian going undercover.”
Fortunately, there was no peroxide necessary for Ubach, 25, to join the cast of Legally Blonde, a new comedy opening next week. A veteran of more than 30 television and film roles (she’s probably best known as Marcia’s lesbian best friend in The Brady Bunch Movie), Ubach says she’s had to dabble in different colors over the years, but admits, “It only looks good [on me] when it’s cut really, really short… like Madonna.”
In Legally Blonde, the Downey, Calif. native stars as perky college sorority girl Serena, whose best friend Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) gets dumped by her boyfriend because she’s too blonde and then proceeds to follow him to Harvard Law School. “This movie really says a lot of things about how blondes can have a lot of fun and be smart and get what they want,” says Ubach. “I have a lot of blonde girlfriends and they have some insecurities about how they’re not always thought of as the most intellectual group of girls.”
Of course, Ubach admits that blonde jokes were flying fast and furious on the set of the film, which also stars Luke Wilson, Selma Blair and Jennifer Coolidge. “I wish I had picked up a couple, but I can’t remember any,” she confesses. “So maybe brunettes don’t have very good memories.”
