Terek Nor was built in 2351 by the Cardassians. It was used as a mining station, and using Bajorian slave labor, stripped the planet Bajor of any mining value.

The Cardassians relinquished control of Bajor in 2369, and shortly thereafter Terek Nor came under the control of Starfleet at the request of the Provisional government of Bajor and was renamed Deep Space Nine.

When Starfleet gave command of the station to Commander Sisko, he was reluctant to accept this new post due to it's remoteness. Upon discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, though, he realised the value of the post and rconsidered his decision.

Upon discovery of the wormhole, DS9 had to be moved from it's then orbit around Bajor to the Denerios belt, a normal journey of 3 months. It was acheived in under a day by using the stations deflector shield to acheive a low-level warp field around the entire station, threby reducing it's apparant mass and enabling it's RCS thrusters to move it at impulse speeds.

DS9 has become the center of commercial, scientific and strategic importance with the discovery of the first stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant.
