The 'Great Experiment' as it came to be called, was a failure, with the newly developed Transwarp engines failing to provide the speed enhancements they were said to produce. The class was refitted with normal warp drives and went into production as a main line ship class. Excelsior ships are battleships, with enough firepower to defend aginst a squadron of hostile attackers single-handedly - as seen in Star Trek 6, when the Excelsior fired multiple volleys of torpedoes at a Bird-of-Prey while the Enterprise only managed two or three at best.
