Their relatively small size belies a much greater mass which in turn required a new type of Warp engine. Enter the Variable Geometry Warp Drive. An Intrepid class ship can cruise at warp 9.2 for as long as it has fuel, and it will do no more damage to the fabric of subspace as a ship travelling at warp 4. Also, Intrepid class ships use bio-neural computer circuits, which in effect mean that the computers on the ship are living, and perhaps, given time, the computers may become truly self-aware and attempt to do their own thing. This is yet to be tested in practice.
