This ship is in effect a larger, more modern Excelsior, based on the same design, while adding in new and enhanced technologies as they are developed. Sovereign class starships use Bio-Neural gel-Pac computer systems, like the Intrepid class, and have a greater firepower than the Galaxy and Excelsior class combined.
The First and best evidence of this combat capability was when the NCC 1701-E Enterprise engaged a Borg cube in Sol system during the second Borg invasion and it's immense firewpoer came to be used in it's entirety. The Borg ship was destroyed by intense weapon fire, not by computer virus, or command. This was the first evidence that a Borg ship could be destroyed by combat, not by guile.
Starfleet intends to construct more of the Sovdereign class as needs permit and the Excelsior is rotated out of active duty.
