The Companions

Susan

Susan Foreman:  Susan is a young Time Lord who fled Gallifrey with the her grandfather, the Doctor in the TARDIS he "borrowed". In human reckoning she looks to be about fifteen years old, although her eyes betray a knowledge far greater than that of the Earth school girl she resembles. Her immaturity sometimes shows when she behaves childishly or selfishly, and her impulsiveness can sometimes lead to misfortune. Her affection for the Doctor is strong and she becomes quite concerned if he goes missing. Generally, however, she is a bright and cheerful woman. When she is not unbalanced by fear or a sense of panic, Susan is resourceful and inventive, and often displays a good sense of initiative when opportunities present themselves.  Like the Doctor, she is an improviser; Susan rarely has a clear plan of action.  Her grandfather was very stern and she would never disobey his orders.  She left the TARDIS finally by force of her grandfather so that she could settle down with her love.  It was a hard parting between them, but he knew she would only go if he left her no choice.  They met again years later on Gallifry in the Death Zone, where the incarnations of the Doctor had been sent.  She also met up with the Sixth incarnation of the Doctor when the Rani attempted to destroy the Doctor's lives.

Ian

Ian Chesterton:  Ian first the Doctor when he and Barbara Wright investigated into the background a strange student of theirs.  They discovered the TARDIS and to keep them from letting that secret out, the Doctor trapped them in the TARDIS and took off, thus making them reluctant companions.  Ian is a forthright teacher who frequently questions the motives and actions of the Doctor. He acts nobly and defensively to help his friends and traveling companions.  Ian, however, is quietly heroic: he might boast of his exploits only after an adventure has ended.  He is fond of the Doctor, but the Time  Lord's superior attitude and constant  testing irritate him and can lead to arguments and a very strained atmosphere. He is close to fellow schoolteacher Barbara Wright, although their relationship has developed only during their travels with the Doctor.  Outwardly an observer might notice only that they were good friends.  Ian finally left the TARDIS when he and Barabara escaped back in Earth in a Dalek time machine.

Barbara

Barbara Wright:  Barbara is an attractive and intelligent teacher who worked at Coal Hill School in London.  She met the First Doctor in the junk yard on Totter's Lane in London.  Although Barbara is a vulnerable character, she does have inner strength which can manifest itself in situations where she might ordinarily be expected to break. She will support and comfort other women who are scared or upset and restrain her own fears while doing so. And she will become assertive if she has to champion a cause she believes in, or at least believes is the right one in the circumstances. She is on the verge of becoming the liberated woman that Earth society in the 1960's brought forward.  The Doctor often infuriates Barbara, although she tends to restrain her feelings: it is Ian who often speaks for both of them.  She left the TARDIS with Ian.

Vicki

Vicki:  Vicki is an orphaned colonist from Earth in the 25th century. Her spaceship crashed on the planet Dido, from which she was rescued by the First Doctor, Ian and Barbara.  Bright but seemingly innocent, and easily terrified by alien monsters. Her youth and naivety means that she is easily taken in by other people, and will often accept people for what they say they are.  Vicki is a quite likable young girl on the whole and gets on well with fellow companions Ian and Barbara: Barbara's mothering instinct is strong when Vicki is around. The Doctor's best opinion of her would be as a foolish child, although he would be concerned if she went missing. Vicki has one great weakness: she is absolutely terrified of heights.  Despite her weakness and childish behavior, Vicki is quite resourceful and can cope with surviving on her own.  When they arrived in Troy during the Trojan Wars, Vicki decided to change to stay with a young man named Troilus and change her name to Cressida.

Steven

Steven Taylor:  Steven first met the Doctor on Mechanus, when they were imprisoned along with him.  Steven Taylor is an adaptable, resourceful but not always inspired spaceship pilot for whom direct action seems to be the best course. His rashness is tempered only by the extremes of the situation, for example, if he has no one to back him up, or by the intelligent reasoning of a companion such as Vicki or the Doctor.  He is something of a skeptic and tends only
to to believe in that which he can confirm himself.  His habit of calling the Doctor "Doc" irritates the Time Lord, who snaps rejoinders for Steven to call him by the proper name. This seems to have no effect on Steven, whose easy-going, self-confident nature seems impervious to criticism.  He did leave the Doctor when he decided to remain behind with a group of savages and become their leader.

Katrina

Katrina:  Katrina first met the Doctor and Steven when they rescued her from the ruins of Troy.  She was a servant to the prophetess Cassandra who found herself embroiled in the battle for Troy when the Greeks used the Trojan Horse to gain entry to the city.  During the attack Steven was wounded and she came to his aid.  She then decided to leave the blood and carnage of her home and travel with the Doctor and Steven.  She was the archetypal pretty, defenseless handmaiden.  A simple girl who was mystified by the universe and alien worlds.  She loved the Doctor and Steven, such that she sacrificed her life for them.  She was one of the two companions who lost their lives saving the Doctor from the Daleks, Sara Kingdom being the other.  Katrina's one object in life had been the hope that one day the Doctor would transport her one day to the Palace of Perfection, but death robbed her of that chance.

Sara

Sara Kingdom:  Sara was a ruthless and dedicated forty-first century secret agent of Mavic Chem, the Guardian of the Solar System, who had betrayed Earth by giving the Daleks the necessary element to create the supreme weapon, a Time Destructor.  Such was her dedication that Sara killed her own brother, Bret Yvon.  She later learned Mavic Chem's true intent and how misplaced her loyalty had been in him.  She quickly changed sides and joined up with the Doctor to defeat the Daleks.  She paid dearly for this triumph however, as her own life was extinguished when she couldn't pass through time with the Doctor and as a result quickly aged hundreds of years, thus killing her instantly.

Dodo

Dodo Chaplet:  Dodo first met the Doctor when she stepped into the TARDIS on the way home from school, under the mistaken belief that it was a real police box.  Her elfin features, mischievous and cockney manner, as well as her use of slang, nearly drove the Doctor insane.  She parted company with the Doctor after she had nearly fallen victim to the renegade computer, WOTAN.

Polly

Polly:  Polly had worked as an assistant to the designer of the WOTAN computer.  She too stepped into the TARDIS under the impression that it was a real police box.  With her at the time was merchant seaman Ben Jackson, and together they became the Doctor's new companions.  She was a kooky, she was an anti-hero who was for the most part a coward.  She introduced the sixties to the Doctor with her manner and dress, much to his amusement.  She and Ben left the Doctor after a nasty encounter with the Chameleons at Gatwick Airport.

Ben

Ben Jackson:  Ben was a cockney, merchant seaman, who after proved himself the most resourceful and loyal of all the Doctor's assistants.  His practical experience of the sea made him well aware of the need of discipline on board ship, even the TARDIS.  His technical knowledge more than once enabled him to help the Doctor outwit his enemies.  The only fault was in the transformation from the serious-minded First Doctor to the cosmic and unpredictable Second Doctor.  This left him extremely confused and led to several arguments between the two.  He left along with Polly.

Jamie

Jamie McCrimmon:  Jamie, the kilt wearing Scotsman, met the Doctor when he escaped from the terrible slaughter of the English rout of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Scottish troops at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.  Jamie was to show the same kind of devotion to the Doctor that he had shown to his prince.  Not the most cleverest of people, he was none the less intensely practical and more than once saved the vague and absent minded Doctor from disaster.  This loyalty was long lasting and he became one of the few companions to have stayed with the Doctor to the very end of his life.  He was fiercely defensive of his Doctor.  They met up with the Sixth Doctor and Peri when a scientist captured the Second Doctor to gain access to the secrets of time travel.  The Sixth Doctor freed the Second and he and Jamie were on their way.  The friends were forced apart when the Doctor was found guilty at his trial by the Time Lords for interfering in other cultures.  The Doctor was forced to exile on Earth in a new regeneration and Jamie was returned to his time, with all memories of the Doctor wiped from his mind.

Victoria

Victoria Waterfield:  The demure and attractive Victoria, the daughter of a Victorian scientist, proved to be another companion who literally screamed at the sign of danger.  She began an adopted daughter of the Doctor when her father, Edward Waterfield, was killed saving the Doctor from a Dalek death ray.  She was a valiant and loving person who was rather young and immature to deal adequately with the rigors of  time travel.  It was her screams that helped put an end to the Weed Creatures.  It was then that she decided to give up the Doctor's lifestyle and settle down with the Harris family.

Zoe

Zoe Herriet:  Zoe was a former scientist and astronomer on the Space Wheel who joined the Doctor from a far future Earth age.  Her confidence and quick thinking showed her capable of dealing with dire emergencies, such as when she destroyed a Cybermen invasion fleet.  She also had a very high intelligence yet could still be puzzled by the commonplace, such things as candles mystified her.  She was a bit more in control than the other companions had been, but was quite capable of loosing that control when the situation began frightening and severe.  She too was forced away from the Doctor by the Time Lords and she too was returned to her time with all memories of the Doctor erased.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart:  The Brigadier is the only companion to have traveled with all seven incarnations of the Doctor.  First when he met up with the Second Doctor as only a Colonel then in a fight against the Yeti's and the Cybermen.  Then again when the Third Doctor was imprisoned on Earth.  The Brigadier protected the Doctor and appointed him Chief Scientific Advisor of his command UNIT, the United Nations Intelligence Task force.  For many years they were together battling the evil of Earth.  Then after his regeneration, the Fourth Doctor became more distant, showing up from time to time, but remaining a wanderer.  The Brigadier last returned to his old post when the Seventh Doctor arrived and they were forced to battle Queen Morgain and her evil son to stop them from capturing Excaliber and destroying Earth.  A tough, military man, the Brigadier always questioned the Doctor's knowledge and methods.  He was however a true and brave friend to the Doctor, always willing to risk life and limb for him.

Sgt. Benton

Sergeant Benton:  Sergeant Benton was a regular soldier brought into UNIT when the fighting force was first created.  He became one of the few full-time members of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart's force and proved himself both a skillful soldier as well as a devoted subordinate to the Second Doctor during his time in UNIT.  His knowledge of weapons, his military training and his sound sense of discipline not only saw him safely through UNIT, but aided him for the rest of his life.  He eventually retired and was last heard of being a used car salesman.

Capt. Mike Yates

Captain Mike Yates:  Mike Yates was transferred to UNIT during the Auton Invasion of Earth.  He found himself immediately in conflict with the Master.  A typical young, dashing army officer, he had great skills in leadership.  He always had a particularly restless nature about him however.  He was always impressionable and unfortunately was involved in a conspiracy to reverse time all over the Earth to return it to a serene state.  Operation Golden Age needed him to be their leak and he was soon found out.  He was invalided out of the force after the events at the chemical plant that led to the Green Death.  He redeemed himself somewhat, however, when he returned to warn the Doctor about the invasion of the spiders from Metabelis 3.

Liz Shaw

Liz Shaw:  Liz was a Cambridge University scientist with degrees in physics and medicine when she joined UNIT as the Third Doctor's assistant.  Despite her high IQ, Liz could never quite comprehend some of the Doctor's more advanced reasoning, yet still was able to be an able and useful assistant.  Liz also provided the link between the Doctor and the British Division of UNIT, the United Nations Intelligence Task Force based in Geneva and set up to fight extraterrestrial threats.  Ultimately she resigned from UNIT to return to Cambridge after defeating Professor Stahlamn's terrible gas.

Jo Grant

Josephine Grant:   Jo Grant first met the Third Doctor when the Brigadier was forced to give her a job as the Doctor's new assistant.  She eventually got over the Doctor's initial dread in working with her.  They enjoyed many adventures together.  She was a zany, pretty, scatter-brained, and accident prone teenager who never turned into the scientist the Doctor tried to make her.  She was short-sighted and loved to scream at the sight of danger, but was a very caring person who appealed to those she met.  She departed from the Doctor when she married Professor Jones on Earth.

Sarah

Sarah Jane Smith:   Sarah Jane Smith was a journalist that first met the Second Doctor during his imprisonment on Earth and time with UNIT.  A very headstrong, defensive woman, she never let anyone step over her without her speaking her mind.  This was due to her being orphaned and being raised by her Aunt Miss. Lavinia Smith, who also happened to be a distinguished scientist.  The Doctor assumed the identity of Professor Smith to gain entry to a top secret research center to investigate some mysterious disappearances.  They shared a strong relationship that carried though into the Fourth Doctor.  They tie was broken however when the Doctor was summoned to Gallifry and he knew it would be impossible to take her with him.  She did meet up with them again briefly in the Death Zone on Gallifry when the Fourth Doctor was trapped in the time vortex.  She later discovered a crate in her aunts attic that the Doctor had given her as a going away present.  It was K-9 Mach 3.

Harry Sullivan

Harry Sullivan:  Harry was the doctor for UNIT when he was directed to assist the Doctor through his third regeneration.  Brilliant in 20th century medicine, his ability to innocently cause near-catastrophies made the Doctor incredibly irritated.  A former Royal Navy officer and qualified surgeon proved a loyal assistant and ever ready protector of Sarah Jane.  He eventually left the Doctor's company once he was returned to his own time.

K-9

K-9:   No companion was as much loved for its time then K-9.  The mechanical dog first met the Doctor when the Doctor had been taken over by an alien being and had been brought to a space hospital.  There K-9, a creation of Professor Marius as a companion, aided the Doctor in the destruction of the alien entity.  K-9 could not be brought with the Prof. so he left with the Doctor in search of knowledge.  K-9 always responded to his masters whistle and was quick to stun anyone who stood in their way.  K-9 left the Doctor on Gallifry to stay with Leela and Andred, but the Doctor constructed a second, K-9 Mach 2.  This new version was faster and had more power than the original, but was always blowing up or breaking.  Eventually he too left the Doctor and stayed with Romana II at the Warriors Gate in E-Space.  The Doctor then built another as a gift to Sarah Jane Smith, and became a companion to her.  K-9 was always quick and aided the Doctor.  He proved to be a valuable companion.

Leela

Leela:  Leela first met the Fourth Doctor when he landed on her warring home world.  She was brought up as a fighting warrior in the fierce tribe of the Sevateem who had degenerated over the years from advanced star travelers to a near stone age culture.  She forced her way into the TARDIS after the Doctor had ended the war between the tribes to pursue adventure with him.  She was quick and resourceful.  Her primitive instincts and survival techniques aided the Doctor to get them out of many scrapes.  She was independently minded and very willing to stand up for her own rights.  She left the Doctor on Gallifry when she fell in love with Andred, a captain in the Gallifry army.

Romana

Romana (First and Second Incarnation):  Romanadvoratrelunder, arrived with the Fourth Doctor and had been sent by the High Council of Time Lords to aid the Doctor in finding the segments of the Key To Time.  She was originally very condescending of the Doctor as he is recognized as a rebel on Gallifry.  Eventually though she warmed up to him.  Following the segments dispersal back across space and time, she regenerated.  Her new self was more warm and charming and liked to have as fun as the Doctor did.  Time went on and following their adventure in E-Space, Romana II decided to stay with the Thurels at the Warriors Gate to avoid going back to Gallifry.  She stayed in E-Space with K-9 and began to construct her own TARDIS to help to free the enslaved Thurels on many worlds.

Adric

Adric:  Adric first met up with the Doctor and Romana during the Doctor's entrapment in E-Space, the exo-space time continuum.  His people were fleeing to their star liner to avoid Mist Fall, a dark time when creatures emerged from the swamp and strange gasses gave life to giant spiders.  The Doctor uncovered the truth behind their existence and Mist Fall and Adric ventured into the TARDIS and placed a stolen Spectral Anomalizer on the console to replace the Doctor's broken one.  He then stowed away in the TARDIS and returned to N-Space with the Doctor.  He stayed with the Doctor through his fifth life and while trying to save Earth from being devastated by a an explosive crash with a warp cargo ship, Adric was killed.  He had always proved willing and resourceful.  His mathematical excellence aided the Doctor in many ways, but he was still young and inexperienced.  He was missed badly by his friends.

Nyssa

Nyssa of Traken:  Nyssa met the Doctor when he arrived after an urgent call to the planet Traken to aid the Keeper of Traken in a succession.  She was the daughter of Consul Tremas and aided the Doctor in stopping the Master from claiming himself as Keeper of Traken.  Unfortunately her father's body was taken over by the Master who needed a living soul to regenerate.  She sent for the Doctor and traveled with him in hopes of finding her father.  She discovered what the Master had done to him and stuck with the Doctor, in hopes of someday being able to gain her father back.  Her home planet was also by the Master when he stalled Logopolis and the entropy being held back for thousands of years by the Logopolians burst forth.  She parted with the Doctor to minister to the sick Lazars on Terminus.  She was also keen with mathematics and very skilled in technology.

Tegan

Tegan Jovanka:  Tegan Jovanka, the air stewardess, first met the Fourth Doctor by accident.  The Doctor had landed with Adric to take measurements of a real Police Box on Earth when Tegan's aunts car broke down.  She wandered into the TARDIS due to the sinister work of the Master and got lost inside.  Meanwhile the Master murdered her aunt with the Tissue Compression Eliminator.  Tegan stayed with the Doctor when he left Earth for Logopolis in hopes of getting even with the Master for murdering her aunt.  She watched as the Fourth Doctor fell from the Pharos satellite dish and the Master escaped.  She stayed through with the Doctor in his fifth life.  She was a very strong willed girl who always was the pessimist.  The Fifth Doctor was always telling her, "Brave heart Tegan."  She had a very close friendship with Nyssa and Adric.  She was easily distracted and quick to anger, having grown tired of the Doctor not being able to get her back home to Heathrow Airport so she could fulfill her dream of being an Air Stewardess.  The Doctor did finally get her home and they parted.  When her cousin vanished in Holland, Tegan went searching for him, finding the Doctor involved as well as the sinister Omega.  Following the death of a friend on Earth due to the Daleks, Tegan tearfully told the Doctor that she had grown tired of the life style and they parted rather hastily.

Turlough

Vislor Turlough:  Turlough first appeared when he maliciously stole the now retired Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart's antique car with a friend he had dubbed "Hippo" and crashed.  He was then confronted by the Black Guardian and forced into a deal that in return for his life back, he had to destroy the Doctor.  He agreed and so became a puppet for the Black Guardian.  Nyssa and Tegan knew there was something sinister about him from the start.  His advanced knowledge led clue to the fact that he was an alien.  After he was freed from the grasp of the Black Guardian, Turlough became a more trustworthy companion.  Eventually it was discovered that Turlough's father and himself had been on the losing side of a civil war on their home planet, Trion.  Turlough's father and brother were sent in exile aboard their ship, which crashed on a barren world.  Turlough was sent to a Trion agent in London to be looked after and he was enrolled in the local school.  Turlough was always stubborn and wary of strangers.  He looked after the Doctor, noticing how naive his fifth incarnation was.  He met his brother on a barren world, after attempting to use the TARDIS to flee his own people.  He sent for a Trion ship to transfer the populous from the unstable planet to safety.  Turlough, learning that he was no longer being persecuted, made the decision to return to his home with his brother.

Chameleon

Chameleon:  Chameleon first met the Doctor on Earth, during the time of King Richard's Crusades.  The Master had discovered him while trapped on Xeraphas and he then learned of Chameleon's secret, he is controlled by the most powerful mind present.  His mind and the Master were linked.  After the Master was defeated on Earth from gaining the throne of King Richard, having Chameleon impersonating the King, Chameleon joined the Doctor.  His ability to alter his appearance to any person or thing proved useful, but more so for the Master.  When the Master was hurt in an accident with a new Tissue Compression Eliminator, Chameleon flew to his aid, redirecting the TARDIS.  He was still under the Master's control.  The Doctor, following Chameleon's wish to be terminated, destroyed him with the Tissue Compression Eliminator.

Peri

Perpugilliam Brown (Peri):  Perpugilliam Brown, or Peri as she was called, first met the Fifth Doctor when he showed up on Earth after receiving a distress call from Trion based from Earth.  The Doctor landed and traced the signal while meanwhile, Peri was confronting her Uncle Howard about going on a trip.  Howard left Peri trapped on the boat so she would miss her flight because he didn't want her wandering.  She swam to the shore but started to drown.  Turlough saw her on the TARDIS scanners and rescued her.  She decided to stay with the Doctor and they became good friends.  She and the Doctor contracted the lethal Spectrox Toxemia and the only antidote they had the Doctor gave his companion, sealing his own fate.  She stuck with the unbalanced Sixth Doctor until his trial.  She was shown to the Doctor as executed by the Time Lords, but in fact she married a warrior king and lived happily ever after.

MEl

Mel:   Melanie was sent for by the Master along with Sabbilon Glitz to aid the Doctor's defense in his second trial by the Time Lords.  She was a computer programmer from Earth, who loved excersizing and keeping fit.  Her habits were forced upon the Sixth Doctor, much to his chagrin, as he was always forced to drink carrot juice, Mel's special health drink and work out on an excersizing bike.  She was taken from the future of the Doctor after they had been companions so she recognized him immediately once brought aboard the ship by the Master.  She was quick thinking and resourceful, but also was a companion who could scream at the sign of danger.  Her curious mind ended her in many a tough scrape, which the Doctor always would rescue her from.  She parted with the Doctor at the frozen space station and left with Sabbilon Glitz.

Ace

Ace: Ace was perhaps the most vivacious and headstrong companion of them all.  Her thirst for adventure and danger proved to quite a challenge to the laid back Seventh Doctor.  They first met when the Seventh Doctor and Mel arrived on a space port on frozen planet.  There the Doctor discovered that Ace had come from 20th century Earth and that a time storm had swept her from her bedroom into this part of space and far into the future.  She was incredibly independent.  Her trademark was Nitro-9, an explosive mix of chemicals that proved quite handy to the Doctor in times of great distress.  She grew up in a small rural town in England, where she was the typical teenager who had a gang of friends.  Her parents were very condescending towards her and she never did miss them.  When she was growing up she was dared by her friends to enter an old haunted mansion.  She discovered a powerful evil force and frightened of it, burned the house to the ground.  Years later the Doctor tricked her into going back in time to find out what happened in that house.  She also met her mother as an infant on a military compound in the Atlantic.  She traveled far with the Seventh Doctor and never left him.

Grace

Dr. Grace Holloway:  Doctor Grace Holloway was the surgeon on call when the Seventh Doctor was shot down on Earth in 1999.  He was brought to the hospital, but was taken to cardiology and into the hands of Grace when his heartbeat was found to be at 300!  An incredibly high heartbeat for a human, but they did not know otherwise.  She was reluctantly pulled into the aid of the Eighth Doctor to stop the Master from pulling the Earth through the TARDIS' Eye of Harmony and stealing the Doctor's remaining regenerations.  She was taken over by the Master briefly, but her scientific mind helped to repair the TARDIS and free the Doctor just in time.  She was always afraid of heights and of death and it was a childhood dream that made her a Doctor and also a dream to hold back death.  She was killed by the Master in the final battle, but was revived by the TARDIS.  She and the Doctor fell in love, but their lifestyles kept them apart.  She didn't want to leave Earth and he didn't want to stay.  They parted by the waterfront on New Years Eve.

Lee

Chang Lee:  Lee had been born into a lower class Chinese family.  He was raised on the street and thus always had to fend for himself.  Stealing, robbery and the liked led him into a gang.  In 1999, his gang was shot and killed, all except for him, for it was the timely landing of the TARDIS in front of him that spared him from the rival gang's bullets.  Unfortunately the Seventh Doctor was shot down by them.  Lee stole the Doctor's things from the hospital after he had "died" and went to the TARDIS.  He was able to gain entry with the Doctor's key and it was there that he met the Master, who tricked him into thinking that the Doctor was evil.  He was a foolish companion of the Master, until the Master slipped up and Lee learned the truth.  He was killed by the Master, but he too was revived by the TARDIS.  The Doctor let Lee keep the two bags of gold dust that the Master had given him.  He warned Lee to stay away from San Francisco next Christmas and so they parted.
