Episode 209 — Hunted

When Maggie's brother unexpectedly returns to Mt Thomas, he kicks off a chain of frightening events that turn her life upside down.

Maggie's life is turned upside down when what was meant to be a romantic night with PJ is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of her brother Robbie. Robbie has escaped from prison and, with no one else to turn to, arrives on Maggie's doorstep and begs for help. Again he pulls out all the emotional stops but Maggie is resolved to do the right thing. She can only assure him that he will be fairly treated if he gives himself up and returns to prison. Robbie turns on his sister, hurting her as he shoves her to the ground. He flees into the night.

After the events of the previous evening, Tom thinks it best that Maggie leave Mt Thomas while they hunt for Robbie. She takes up residence at the previously closed Widgeree Police Station to oversee the local speedboat event that is to take place at the lake. But as soon as she arrives she is alerted to an incident at a house where a woman lies bloody and unconscious in the front yard.

In an attempt to call for help, Maggie enters the woman's house where she is stopped by Hank, the man who has attacked the woman and who is now attempting to abduct her son Jesse.

Even though Hank is successful in taking Maggie's gun, she manages to escape with the boy. Hank, hot on their tails, tries to reload and shoot at the fleeing couple, but Maggie succeeds in getting back to the one-man Police Station to take refuge. Maggie is desperately trying to get help while barricaded inside, but Hank manages to cut the phone lines and find a way to get to the two of them.

Luck is on their side as they escape into the arms of Robbie, who has driven to Widgeree to find his sister and again try to get her help. This time it is Robbie who is the saviour. Realising what he has got himself into, Robbie is desperate to get away and not involve himself in Maggie's dilemma. He knows he will be arrested if he drives Maggie and the boy to safety. While attempting to work out what he should do, Robbie's indecision allows Hank to catch up with them. Hank forces their car off the road, injuring Robbie and taking off cross-country in pursuit of Maggie and the boy.

Meanwhile, because of their unsuccessful attempts at trying to contact her, PJ and Ben arrive at Widgeree Station. PJ in particular is deeply concerned for his Maggie when he sees the remains of what must have been a perilous struggle. They all now desperately start to search for her and the boy, having uncovered more about the danger they are both in. Hank is out to kill Jesse, a witness to a previous murder, but Maggie has planted herself in the way and she too must now be fighting for her life. PJ heads out to the bush and finds Robbie wandering around in a daze with a severe head wound. He leads PJ to the spot where Hank forced them off the road.

They begin a search of the area, knowing that as time ticks away Hank is becoming more desperate, capable of ending the kidnappings by killing both his hostages. The sound of a shot rings out across the countryside, resulting in the death of someone we have come to know all too well.
