The boy is Lachlan Healy, son of Doug Healy, one of the town's most influential businessmen and a council member. His wife Karen, Dash's school teacher, was the one who convinced Dash to join the force.
But a cloud hangs over the family: Adam discovers that Lachie is covered in bruises. Adam and Dash begin to look into the situation and it seems that there is some question about Doug's behaviour. Could the little boy be the subject of abuse?
Meanwhile, a shoplifting case is being wrapped up and Tom asks Dash to return a stolen shirt to the owner. However, Dash is unable to find the item. A frantic search ensues, the Heelers knowing that if they are unable to fid the shirt ESD and Falcon-price will have to be informed and Dash will face disciplinary action.
Adam also feels under suspicion. He went to a function the night before and the picture of him in the morning paper shows him wearing a very similar shirt to the one that has gone missing. But speculation ends when Maggie discovers the shirt in Dash's desk drawer. Dash must have accidentally put it there on the way out to a call.
Tom resists the urge to reprimand Dash for being absentminded when he learns that she has an appointment with the doctor to learn whether or not the chemotherapy has worked… to see if she no longer has cancer.
Dash gets a frantic call from Karen Healy – her three-month-old daughter has stopped breathing and she can't locate her husband. Tom organises an ambulance and Dash searches for Doug. All Dash's suspicions about the character of the man are confirmed when she finds him in a compromising situation with his personal assistant.
When Dash arrives at the hospital and consults with the doctor about the baby's condition she does not get the response she expected. Dr Jasmin has done some checking – Karen has brought her child to doctors with this complaint on a number of occasions. She believes that Karen has been deliberately suffocating her baby to gain attention for herself.
Dash is horrified by the accusation, sure that if anyone had harmed the child it would have been Doug. However, when Maggie and PJ set up a video camera in the hospital to monitor the baby's room, they see Karen trying to smother her child. They arrive just in time to stop Karen and save the baby's life.
Back at the station, Doug Healy denies the possibility that his wife could have done such a thing. However, because of the taped evidence from the hospital the Heelers believe that they have a strong case against Karen. So when they arrive for work the next morning and discover that the tape is missing, PJ fears that they may have to drop the charges. Inspector Monica Draper is called in to investigate and believes that the theft was an inside job.
Dash is the immediate suspect, because of her past relationship and defence of Karen. But could the perpetrator have been Adam, who has been seen fraternising with Doug and appears to be short of cash? As they both come under suspicion Dash's fears for her career are overshadowed by her upcoming doctor's appointment and the test results which will reveal if she will live or die. As the investigation intensifies around them, Dash and Adam find comfort in each other's arms.
