Hidden in the Knight Part 4
By: D Anne Paris
Candy stared in horror at Garth Knight. His eyes held such coldness and his snarl made her feel paralyzed. Why did he look exactly like Michael? What was he planning on doing with her?
Garth took hold of her shoulders, "My dearest, we are going to make Michael pay for everything that he's taken away from us."
Puzzled, Candy didn't understand what Garth was trying to tell her.
Seeing her confusion, Garth continued. "Michael has taken everything away from me and from you. Your grandfather gave Michael everything- the Foundation, Knight Industries, KITT. I'm…" he stopped and corrected himself, "We're left with nothing."
"You're wrong!" Candy protested. How dare he accuse Grandpa! "Grandpa left everything to me!"
"How do you know that?" Garth asked her coyingly. He knew that Michael was left everything after Wilton Knight's death, but he wasn't sure if anything was given to Candy.
"He told me, himself."
Garth looked into her eyes. It could be true that his father's inheritance would also have to her. Still, that wasn't what he was mainly after- he wanted Michael Knight to suffer and Candy was his key. Seriously, he told her, "Your grandpa lied to you, Candace."
Candy felt the fear dissolve inside of her as anger slowly replaced it, "No, he didn't! He gave everything to me and nothing to you because you're evil!" With that she began to claw at his face furiously.
Garth grabbed her arms and pinned them behind her. "No, I'm not! They all made you think that!" He said with fury that he couldn't contain any longer, "They are evil, they stole everything from me," he paused and then added, "Including you. But now I have you back and we're going to make Michael and Devon pay."
"No!" Candy shouted as she tried to free herself from Garth's tight grip, " I don't believe you, you're lying!"
Garth kept his hold on her, "Listen to me! They lied to you! Your grandfather, Michael, Devon, they all lied." He tilted her face and looked into her eyes, "Michael lied to you about your mom."
Those words caught Candy's attention, "My mom?"she asked as her eyes welled up with tears. "They said they couldn't find her…"
Garth looked at her seriously, "Oh, they did find her and they made sure she never came back to you."
"No!" she screamed as tears fell down her cheeks. "You're a liar! Michael would never hurt my Mom!"
Garth snapped back at her, "Yes, he would. That's why she left in the first place, to get away from him because he kept on hurting her."
"No…" Candy whispered through her falling tears.
"It's true. That's why we have to destroy Michael and KITT."
Candy shook her head. Everything seemed to be caving in on her. Michael killed her mother? Grandpa lied to her? Garth wasn't evil? Michael and KITT must be destroyed?
Garth saw his influence rub off on her. Soon she'll turn against Michael and KITT and that would be the ultimate wound for Michael.
Gently, Garth released her and patting her shoulder as he tried to sooth her. "There, there. I know it's a lot to take in and it hurts so much to hear, but I felt that you needed to be told the truth. You are going to be safe now, Candace. Michael won't be able to hurt you, like he hurt your mother."
Candy looked at him as she slowly wiped away her tears, "But you kidnapped me and kidnapping is wrong."
"Not when it means that I'm saving my daughter's life."
Candy couldn't believe it. She wanted to but the words of everyone at the Foundation kept haunting her. Still, something inside of her told her that Garth might be telling the truth. So far, he didn't physically hurt her and his words seems genuine to her.
Garth let her shoulders go. "Come," he told her as he extended his hand for her to take, "I want to show you Goliath."
Absentmindedly, Candy followed him through some corridors and down a few flights of stairs. Soon she was standing outside and there was a gray limousine waiting for them. The chauffeur opened the door for them and Garth motioned for her to get in. Obeying, she climbed in and sat down by the other window. Garth sat down beside her, and the chauffeur closed the door.
The car began to move and Candy watched as the building that they came out from slowly moved away from them, as they drove away.
"Are you hungry?" Garth asked breaking the silence. He opened a mini refrigerator and took out a plate with some caviar placed on it.
Candy turned to look at the plate then shook her head, "No."
"Ah, I see that Michael probably fed you less exquisite entrees, like hot dogs and pizza?"
"Hot dogs and pizza are good!" Candy protested as she looked at the stuff on the plate.
Garth nodded, "Of coarse, my sweet, but they don't contain the nutrients you require. That's why you are so skinny."
"I'm thin! Not skinny!"
Garth looked at her. "Is that what Michael and Devon told you?"
Candy thought a moment and replied. "Yeah, and they said that I am beautiful."
Nodding his head, Garth responded, "That, they were right about," coyingly, he added, "If they loved you so much then why did they forbid you to leave the Foundation?
"So you wouldn't take me." Candy told him with irritation.
"You mean so I wouldn't rescue you." Garth corrected her, as he kept reminding her who was the good guy.
Candy shook her head in confusion. Was Garth right?
Garth hid the grin on his face. He had her eating out of his hand. Putting the plate down, he slowly embraced her. "My sweet, things will seem a whole lot clearer in a few days and you'll realize that I am right."
Candy didn't say anything but her mind was filled with confusion.
Garth released her and once again picked up the plate with caviar. "Try one." He coaxed her, "If you don't like it, I won't force you to eat anymore."
Still doubtful but hungry, Candy took one piece and ate it. At first she thought that she'd hate it, but surprisingly she enjoyed the taste. Soon she took another piece and another until there was nothing left on the plate. Apologetically, she looked at Garth, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to eat everything."
Garth cracked a smile, "It's all right. When we get back home you can have as much as you want."
Home. Where will her new home be? Who will be living there? Will she have her own room? Was there a garden there like there was at the Foundation? Would Garth live there with her? Candy thought about this as she focused her attention back to the window.
Garth put the plate back into the refrigerator. Taking a glass he poured himself some wine and began to sip it gingerly, all the while grinning at how smoothly his plan was working. Soon, Candace would help him take down Michael Knight, a man that he despised and wanted to see suffer.

"Michael, you need to get some sleep," KITT suggested as they drove down the highway. They were in route to the coal electric plant since the coal mine came up to be a dead end. It was 7 in the morning and Michael didn't sleep all night as he continued his search for Candy. Michael was dead tired as well as very frustrated. Still, he tried not to show it. Nonetheless, KITT knew his driver well and could sense his condition. KITT tried to accommodate Michael's needs but Michael was so stubborn.
"I won't sleep well until I find her KITT." Michael told him as he glanced at the blanket in the driver's seat. "Garth isn't going to get away with this. Besides, adrenaline is just as good as sleep."
"Very well." KITT told him, knowing from previous conversations with Michael that he wouldn't give in. A few moments passed by in silence before a beeping tone was heard. "Devon's calling." KITT informed him.
"Patch it through." Michael commanded him as he pushed some buttons of the roof panel.
The first monitor on KITT's dashboard lit up and Devon, looking just as tired as Michael felt, was on the screen.
"Michael, did you find anything?" he asked as he sat behind his desk.
Sighing, Michael shook his head, "No, the coal mine was a dead end. KITT scanned the whole surrounding area around it and we didn't find anything. Right now, we're heading down to the abandoned electric plant. I'm hoping that there'll be some clues there."
Devon nodded, "I hope so, for Candy's sake. Michael, Elizabeth Knight has asked me to a luncheon to talk about Candace's kidnapping."
"Are you're going to go?" Michael asked knowing the answer already.
"What other choice do we have?" Devon told him as he placed his hands on his desk. "If Garth has Candace then maybe I'll be able to find out some kind of information from Elizabeth."
"Devon, if Garth does have her then Elizabeth won't give you any information. She'll try and protect her son in any way that she can. "
"I know, Michael. But this is our only chance to find out if Garth does indeed have her and where he's hiding her."
Michael nodded, "All right. Call me as soon as you get back. In the meantime, I'm still going to keep searching while the trail is still fresh."
"Good Luck, Michael."
"Same to you, Devon."
With that the screen went blank and Michael focused his attention back on the road.
"Michael." KITT spoke up. "I don't understand something."
"What, KITT."
"How will Mr. Miles know that Mrs. Knight knows Candy's whereabouts if she won't directly tell him?" KITT asked him.
Michael kept his attention on the road, "Sometimes when a specific topic is brought up, you know how a person feels by looking at their body language."
"I see. Does that include the time when you tried to explain to Candy why you enjoy kissing women so much?"
Michael had to smile at that. He never did know how to explain it to Candy and it was his own actions that caused her to ask. Michael had just started dating Amanda and they both brought Candy along on one of their dates. When Michael and Candy dropped off Amanda afterwards, Michael walked Amanda to the door and ended up kissing her. He returned to the car to find Candy giving him an almost identical look that his mother gave him when he started dating. That's when she asked him why he liked to kiss women. Michael could remember how he just kept on wishing that she would drop the topic. Unfortunately, she didn't and Michael felt very awkward as his explanation slowly geared into the topic of the birds and the bees. Fortunately, they got back to the Foundation before he could really touch onto the topic. Michael sighed, he would now gladly explain the birds and the bees to her if he could have her safe and sound.
"Yeah, KITT." Michael answered. "That was one of those times."
"Candy, knew that the topic bothered you." KITT told him.
Confused, Michael looked at KITT's voicebox, "How do you know that?"
"She told me the next day."
"Oh, really? And what else did she say?"
"She said that Amanda reminded her of Chewbacca."
Michael smiled. Leave it to kids to point out someone's physical appearance. "How much longer until we reach the plant?"
"At our current speed, 20 minutes," KITT told him.
Michael pushed down on the accelerator, increasing their speed. "Now we'll get there in less then 10,"
" 8 minutes 35 seconds to be exact."
"The sooner the better, pal."

The limousine pulled up to a huge warehouse in the middle of some mountains. Garth was the first to get out, then Candy followed him.
"Where are we?" she asked him as they entered through the open garage door.
"We're at the work station, where Goliath is being constructed." Garth told her as they went deeper into the warehouse. "This is where Goliath was born." They kept on walking and passed some large wooden crates.
Candy stopped at one and began reading the labels on it. Danger. Warning. X4-23 Rocket launchers. Rocket launchers? Before she had time to ask Garth what he needed with rocket launchers a shot rang out a few yards ahead of her. Candy ran to where she heard the shot. To her horror she saw a man with a camera lying on the ground dead. She glanced at Garth and saw that he was holding his cane like a gun. When Garth saw her staring at him he came towards her. Candy slowly inched back.
Garth started to reassure her. "Dearest, do not be afraid. This man was a spy from Michael and Devon. He was going to show them what we were planning. He was going to hurt us."
Candy stopped and looked at the man who now was being taken away by two men. "You didn't have to kill him!"
Garth slowly came up to her and put his hand on her shoulder. "Yes, I did. If I didn't then he would have warned Michael somehow and Michael would have found us." Garth then tilted her chin up and looked straight at her, "And if Michael found us he would have killed me and hurt you the way he hurt your mother."
Candy felt tears sting her eyes. She felt so confused and alone.
Garth felt her fragile state and took her hand, "Don't worry, my dear. Goliath and I will protect you." He led her down into the warehouse where there were more crates and even cranes in some places. Candy glanced at everything taking in her soundings and studying them at the same time. Abruptly, Garth stopped. Candy followed his gaze to a huge half-finished semi in the middle of the warehouse. Garth lead her to it as Candy just stared in awe.
"This is Goliath," Garth stated proudly as he patted the semi like an obedient dog, "Isn't he marvelous?"
Candy looked at the truck and kept on staring. Goliath was enormous! From where she stood, it seemed like the top of him was miles away! There was a huge black grill in the front of him, reminding her of a mask that was concealing the true identity of the person. Usually, Candy thought that masks hid evil but in this case, she hoped that wasn't true. Goliath's wheels were almost as tall as she was. She shivered at the thought of being caught under them.
Garth smiled, seeing her awe at the truck's great size. "Take a look inside," he suggested.
Candy slowly walked to the driver's side door. Looking up, she saw that she could not reach to open the door.
Seeing this, Garth opened the door and lifted her in.
Instead of looking straight out to see how high she was, Candy looked at the dashboard.
"It's not digital." She commented with some disgust.
Garth kept his tone even, "Goliath doesn't have to have high tech gadgets to defeat Michael and KITT. His strength is greater then KITT's."
Candy looked at him and saw his anger. He must love Goliath as much as she loved KITT. She didn't dare try to say anything else. Turning her head to the front she looked out at the view.
"It's really high, but KITT can still drive faster then this thing."
Garth grabbed her arm and looked straight into her eyes. "This 'thing' is going to help us get our revenge and he'll prove to them that we are stronger then they are! You remember that!"
"Stop yelling at your daughter, Garth." A woman's voice said behind him.
Garth and Candy looked in the voice's direction to see Elizabeth Knight standing ever so gracefully and watching them.
"Mother, she needs to show respect.."
"It's a machine Garth. It won't be offended by Candace's lack of respect towards it." Elizabeth told him as she walked to Garth and stood beside him.
"Now if you've shown Candace everything, I'll take her back to the penthouse and get her fed and cleaned up."
Garth turned towards Candy and took her out of the truck, "I've shown her enough for today. When Goliath is fully completed I'll want her to be there for the test run."
"Test run?" Candy asked confused. Tests were usually conducted to see if all the malfunctions were repaired. Intrigued she asked, "What kind of test?"
Garth patted her shoulder overjoyed at her curiosity, "You don't need to worry my dear. Just go with your grandmother."
Candy felt like she was just slapped, "No!" she told him, aggravated at being treated like a toy. "I want to know!"
Garth was slowly beginning to loose his patience with her and was about to pick her up and shake her, when his mother intervened by stepping between both of them.
Elizabeth took hold of Candy's hand, "Come dear. Your father's very busy and we don't want to be in his way."
Candy didn't move. Instead, she looked straight at her grandmother, "Why won't you tell me anything? I'm not a baby!"
"Why you…"Garth lunged for her but his mother once again stopped him.
"I'll handle this, Garth. You just worry about getting Goliath completed." Elizabeth told him soothingly. She turned to Candy. "Candace, dear, I'll explain everything to you in the limousine, all right?"
Candy looked at her and felt some doubt in her mind. Still, she didn't have much of a choice. "All right." She plainly answered as she took hold of her grandmother's hand.
Elizabeth smiled, "See? You are a good girl and you're going to make your father and grandmother very proud." With that Elizabeth led Candy back the same way that she came in before to a waiting limousine.
All the while, Candy was still trying to figure out which side was actually good. Did Michael really hurt her mother? Was Garth really telling the truth? Maybe the next few hours with her grandmother would help her answer that.
**
Michael walked through the deserted corridors of the coal plant. KITT scanned the area and found that there was recent activity in the area. On the dirt road there were the fresh tire tracks, one from a sedan and the other from what would be assumed was a limousine. Michael and KITT would have followed the tracks but the wind covered most of them up so the trail ended pretty shortly. KITT also found that two different rooms of the building were the most recently used. One as resent as an hour ago Michael decided to look there in the hope of finding Candy there or some sort of clue to help him find where she was taken to. He walked up the stairs of the building.
"It's to your right." KITT's voice informed him from his watch.
Michael opened the door to his right and found an empty room with a cot. Slowly, he went over to the cot and saw a piece of dark brown hair. Looking it over, Michael discovered that it was Candy's.
"KITT, she was here. Do a detailed scan and try to find something that will help us find her." Michael commanded to KITT.
"Right away, Michael." KITT told him as he began to scan the room.
Michael looked over the rest of the room until something caught his eye. An earring was lying close to the door that he entered. Picking it up, he looked it over and found that it didn’t look like the type of earring that Candy would wear. It was semi circular and engraved with different types of patterns.
Michael's watch beeped twice and Michael answered, "What did you find?" He asked KITT.
"Other then the piece of hair and earring that you found, my scans didn't find anything. The dirt that's in that room is from this particular area."
"What about this hair, is it Candy's?"
"You'd need to put it in my analyzer in order for me to make a positive identification." KITT informed him.
"All, right. I also want you to take a look at this earring." Michael said as he held the earring. "It might be the key we need to help us locate Candy." With that he raced down the stairs and out to KITT.
Getting into KITT, he first placed the piece of hair in the analyzer. It took KITT a few seconds to scan the piece.
"I've got a positive match. It is a piece of Candy's hair." KITT told Michael as he took the hair out and placed the earring inside.
"Well, at least we know that we're on the right track." Michael commented, "Now tell me something about the earring."
"It's quite unique,"
"Why's that?"
"The design on the earring isn't found in any of the mass produced jewelry stores in the United States."
"Meaning?" Michael probed.
"Meaning that this earring was purchased at a store that creates one of a kind jewelry." KITT stated as he scanned his database for a store that matched the description, "The nearest one is in Las Vegas."
Michael turned on the ignition, "All right, that's where we're headed then." With that Michael hit the accelerator and KITT zoomed out of the coal plant, spitting dust behind him.
