Hidden in the Knight Part 5
By: D Anne Paris
Candace felt very nauseous. For the past three hours her grandmother dragged her to a bunch of stores and made her try on dress after dress. At first Candy protested saying she hated dresses and would rather wear sweat pants and a T-shirt, but then her grandmother started to cry saying that Candy didn't love her. Candy felt so guilty that she reluctantly tried on the dresses, half of which her grandmother bought. Still, Candy trusted her grandmother a little more. On the way to the stores her grandmother explained that the test that Garth mentioned merely dealt with going out to the desert and just trying to shoot a test subject.
"Will it be KITT?" Candy asked curiously.
Her grandmother looked at her seriously, "If it was the man that hurt your mother, would you care?"
Candy had her answer and didn't ask anything else. The thing that bothered Candy the most was that she started to feel enjoyment when she thought of Michael being punished. Why? She really didn't know.
"How's that dress?" her grandmother's voice rang out as Candy finished buttoning the dress in the fitting room.
"It's…" Candy looked in the mirror. She looked like a little baby! The dress had so many frills and ruffles that if she sat down she'd be engulfed into the dress.
"Well?" her grandmother asked again outside the fitting room.
Candy opened the door and stepped out.
Her grandmother's face lit up, "You look so adorable!" Turning to the sales woman she said, "We'll take this one, too."
Candy wanted to roll her eyes but she didn't want her grandmother to cry again.
"Would you like to see anymore, Mrs. Knight?" the saleswoman asked.
Elizabeth looked at her watch, "Unfortunately, we can't because we must run along, but please have a selection for us to view tomorrow afternoon."
"Grandma, can I change?" Candy asked as the dress began to itch her.
Elizabeth looked at her warmly, "It's 'Grandmother, may I change'. I want you to learn proper English, Candace."
Candy smiled innocently, "Grandmother, may I change?" she corrected.
"Yes, you may. Put on that blue dress that you tried on before."
Candy went into the fitting room and rolled her eyes. At least the blue dress didn't have any ruffles. It was plain with short sleeves and the skirt went down to her knees. Pulling the ruffley dress off she threw it onto the chair, glad to be free of the concoction. Sighing, she pulled on the blue dress and buttoned it up. Grabbing the white sandals that her grandmother just bought, she put them on her feet and began to buckle them.
"Candace, do you need any help?" Elizabeth asked.
"No, I'm okay." Candy replied as she finished buckling the last sandal. She then picked up the ruffley dress, plus the pants and shirt that she wore when she was kidnapped, Rescued, her father's voice reminded her. Opening the door she went to her grandmother.
Right away, Elizabeth took the pants and shirt from Candy and handed it to the saleswoman, "Please, get rid of these." She told her with distaste towards the clothing.
"No, grandma, I like those pants!" Candy protested.
Elizabeth looked at her, "My dear, you are not going to wear clothes like that. You don't want people to think we shop at the local outlet stores, now do we?"
Candy sighed and looked down at the floor, "No, grandma."
"I didn't hear you dear. What did you say?" Elizabeth asked.
Candy realized her mistake, "No, grandmother."
Elizabeth smiled, "You are such a good girl Candace. Now let's take our items and go meet your father, all right?"
"Yes, grandmother." Candy replied politely. This day is never going to end. Candy said to herself.

"Michael,… Michael we're here," KITT voice stated as it woke him up.
Michael rubbed his eyes and looked at the surroundings. They were definitely in Las Vegas. Casinos and hotels were almost everywhere he looked. "Do you have the address of that jewelry store?"
"Yes, we'll be there in about 30 minutes." KITT informed him.
"Great. I'll take over now." Michael told KITT as he turned off auto cruise. They drove down Las Vegas' streets and soon they were at their destination. The jewelry store was in a very exclusive part of town that was lined with the most expensive stores around. Michael parked KITT in the tree-lined street and went to La Turne Jewelers.
"Ah, Mr. Knight!" a short balding man exclaimed as Michael entered the store. "How nice of you to return."
Michael knew that he hit the jackpot, "Yes, Mr…"
"Winston, sir. Surely you haven't forgotten? I never forget any of our most loyal customers." He beamed as he hovered around Michael like a bee to a flower.
"Um, yes, of coarse Mr. Winston, I haven't forgotten." Michael lied, "I am on my way to go on a trip and I've stopped by to make sure that you have my correct address, for any future mailings that you might send to me." He told the man, who was listening to every single word. Michael concluded that Garth must be a very frequent or very profitable customer for the store.
"Of coarse, Mr. Knight. We would never want you to miss the opportunity to view some of our new items first. Please, this way," The man said as he led Michael to the back of the store to a computer. There, he punched in some keys and said, "The address that we have here is 321 W. Lake Mead Blvd, Suite 412, Las Vegas, Nevada 46532"
"Yes, that's correct," Michael said, memorizing the address. "Thank you very much Mr. Winston." He told him as he turned and headed towards the door.
"You're welcome Mr. Knight." Winston told him adding, "I hope your trip will be most enjoyable."
Michael smiled, "Thank you, I'm sure it will." With that Michael quickly left the store and headed straight to KITT.
"Michael, I found something interesting." KITT informed him when he entered and shut the door.
"What is it?"
"Across the street over by the Children's specialty store there are the imprints of tire tracks."
"Yeah, so?"
"Let me finish,"
"Sorry."
"Like I stated before, I found tire tracks- the same tire tracks that were at the coal plant."
Michael looked at KITT's voice box, "Are you sure?"
"Have I ever been wrong before?" KITT asked.
"I won't answer that," Michael told him as he got out of the car and headed to the children's store. Opening the door, he headed to the cashier.
A pretty blond saleswoman greeted him, "May, I help you?"
"I sure, hope you can." Michael said with a smile as he began to work his charms. "I am looking for something to buy my daughter for her birthday and I was wondering if her grandmother came in and bought some things for her already."
"Oh, well, I’m sure that I can help you with that." The woman told him.
"I sure hope so because I don't want to buy something that her grandmother already bought." Michael said suavely to the saleswoman.
"What's your daughter's name?" The woman asked.
"Candace Knight."
"Oh, she's such a pretty little girl!" The saleswoman told him.
"You've met her?" Michael asked curiously, as he used his charms to gather more information.
"Yes, she was just here about 30 minutes ago with Mrs. Knight. Mrs. Knight is your mother, right?"
Michael hated the thought but he still needed more information, "Yes, she is. Did she by any chance say where they were going?"
She shook her head, "No, only that they had an appointment to keep."
"Was it the black limo that they took?" Michael pried, again using his winning smile.
"Uh, no it was beige. Why do you want to know?" she asked curiously.
"Just wanted to make sure they didn't take the black one because I forgot to buy a new city sticker." He told the woman as he smiled.
"Oh, that would be a problem," the sales woman said as she looked into Elizabeth's file.
"Yeah, and knowing my mother, she would be highly inconvenienced to be pulled over by a police officer."
"I can imagine," the woman told him as she looked through her files. She picked out a list and handed it to Michael, "Here's what Mrs. Knight bought your daughter."
Michael immediately looked at the address. 321 W. Lake Mead Blvd, Suite 412, Las Vegas, Nevada 46532. The same address, Michael thought as he then looked over the rest of the list. Seven dresses, two robes, three pairs of shoes, nine tights,…the list went on and on. The total bill came to $2,563.65! Michael let out a whistle.
"Is there something wrong?" the sales woman asked.
Michael turned to her and smiled, "It seems my mother bought the whole store." He gave the list back to her.
"Mrs. Knight did pick out quite a wonderful wardrobe for your daughter. She has such an exquisite taste for cloths."
"In that case, I guess I'll just have to come back with her so she can help me pick out another wonderful wardrobe. I wouldn't want to buy something that would clash with what she already bought," He then smiled, "Thank you very much for your time."
"It was my pleasure, Mr. Knight." The saleswoman said with a smile, "I hope you'll come again, soon."
Michael winked at her and left the store. Getting into KITT he said, "Well, KITT. It seems that Elizabeth Knight was here with Candy about a half an hour ago and she bought lots of clothes for Candy."
"Did you find anything else?" KITT asked.
"Yeah, her and Garth are staying at the same place- 321 W. Lake Mead Blvd, Suite 412."
"I take it, that's our destination?" KITT asked.
"You got it." Michael told him, starting his engine. "And hopefully, that's where we'll find Candy safe and sound. "

Candy slowly poked at the baked chicken on her plate. The high-class restaurant made her feel uncomfortable and trapped. She looked at Garth and saw that he was enjoying his meal. Her grandmother left her there with Garth and said that she had to go meet someone but would be back soon. Candy moved the green beans over to the other side of her plate. She wasn't really that hungry, and her mind was still reeling with questions.
"Do you not like it?" Garth asked her from across the table.
Candy looked up. Garth looked genuinely concerned about her and she didn't want to hurt his feelings too. "I like it but I guess I'm still full from that stuff you gave me this morning."
"The caviar?" Garth asked as he cut his steak.
"Yes, that. I'll be hungry later." She told him as she gently placed her fork down on the plate.
"Of coarse you will," he told her. "What did your grandmother buy you today?" he asked as ate the steak.
"Mostly dresses." Candy said with some distaste.
Garth swallowed, "You don't like dresses?"
Candy shook her head, "No, they're uncomfortable and itchy."
Garth grinned, "I see and what would you rather wear."
"Sweat pants and a T-shirt." Candy told him.
Garth took a sip of wine, "Well, my dear, you'll soon realize that that attire is not very proper for girls of your status."
"Oh." Candy said with disappointment.
"Candace," Garth asked her, "what do you want to do when you become an adult?"
"I want to work with computers and develop stuff."
"Do you know anything about computers?" Garth asked casually as he finished up his steak.
"Yeah, I know some stuff."
"Would you like to accompany me to see Goliath again after our meal? I'll let you look over some of the computers that we have and you can show me what you know."
Candy couldn't contain her excitement, "Oh, yes! Please Garth!"
Garth glanced at her with an ice-cold stare.
"I'm sorry," she apologized, "I'm sorry, Daddy."
Garth smiled, "I accept your apology, make sure that it doesn't happen ever again."
"It won't." Candy promised as she contained her excitement.
"Good," Garth knew that he had her where he wanted her. Soon she would believe everything that he told her and that would just add more bullets to the gun that would kill Michael Knight.
**
"Elizabeth, I think we should get down to the point," Devon said as he and Elizabeth Knight walked into the dining room.
"Of coarse, Devon." Elizabeth said as she sat down in a chair. "I brought you here to tell you that I'm holding the Foundation solely responsible for Candy's kidnapping."
"That's absurd! We did everything in our power to protect her!" Devon contested.
"I don't care. What I do care about is where my granddaughter is at."
"I'm sure that you know exactly where she's at Elizabeth." Devon told her.
"Devon, are you accusing me?" Elizabeth asked feigning shock.
Devon looked sternly at her, "Michael has found evidence that shows that you and Garth have Candy."
"That's preposterous!" Elizabeth snapped back. "Oh, dear…" she said as she fanned herself, "I feel faint." Still fanning herself, she got up and Devon came up beside her.
The next thing Devon knew, someone from behind him knocked him unconscious. His body fell to the floor and Elizabeth grinned, "Now, my dear Devon, you are going to help us destroy Michael Knight."
**
The phone in the limo rang and Garth picked it up on the second ring.
"Yes?"
"Garth, darling. I have it. I'll deliver to the lab as soon as I can." Elizabeth told him.
"Excellent. The final phase will be complete. Good work, mother."
"Thank you, dear." Elizabeth said with a slight smirk.
With that Garth hung up the phone.
"Was that Grandmother?" Candy asked from the other side of the seat.
"Yes, it was. She will meet us later." Garth told her.
"Oh," Candy said as she turned her attention back to where they were going. Still, Garth's words in the telephone conversation bothered her a bit. Shrugging it off, she gazed at the mountains in the distance.

Michael picked at the lock until the door opened. Slowly, he stepped inside the suite and closed the door behind him. The suite looked more like a house then a hotel room. There was a huge balcony a few yards away with a wonderful view of the city. In addition, a huge staircase was located in the center leading to the second floor. Michael slowly walked towards the staircase and went up the stairs. He turned left and went to the first room that he found. It was a room like any other he saw, a bed, dresser, closet, and a few other accessories. Nothing in the room showed evidence that a little girl would have stayed there. Heading to the next room, Michael found the same thing. He then checked the last room and to his disappointment found nothing. Before he had a chance to look through the closet he heard the door downstairs open and someone came in. Michael hid behind the door of the room, honestly hoping that the person might be Garth. The person entered the room and sat down on the bed. Michael peeked from his hiding place and saw that it was a woman. She suddenly looked up and saw him. Michael went up to her,
"Please don't yell." He told her.
"Garth?" she asked confused. The man looked like Garth but he didn't sound like him at all.
Michael shook his head, "No, I'm Michael Knight."
"You're his brother?" she asked him still confused.
"No, I'm not. It's a long story. Do you know where Garth is keeping a little girl?"
The woman shook her head, "No, I don't." she kept staring at Michael, but then she stopped, "Wait, you said a little girl. Are you talking about Candace?"
"Yes!" Michael said with joy. He finally found something, "Have you seen her?"
"No, I haven't but Garth mentioned her. He said something like, 'Candace is the key to Michael's destruction.'" She then looked at Michael, "He was talking about you, wasn't he?"
Michael nodded, "Unfortunately, yes. Do you have any idea where Garth might be keeping her?"
The woman thought a moment, "No. Garth doesn't tell me much about where he goes. Is Candace in danger?"
"If she's with Garth, she's in grave danger." Michael told her, "What's your name?"
"Rita." She told him, slowly beginning to trust him. Michael's face was identical to Garth's but his whole personality was different., "I wish I could help you…" getting up she walked around the room. "I myself am trying to find out more about Garth. You see, I think that he may have killed my brother."
Michael went over to her, "Rita, we can help each other. I'll help you find out if Garth killed your brother and you help me get Candy back."
"How do I know that I can trust you?"
Michael shook his head, "You're just going to have to."
Rita sighed, she didn't have much of a choice. She had to know the truth. "All right. What do you want me to do?"
"Find out where Candy is, then call me at this number." He said as he gave her a business card.
Rita read the card, "The Foundation for Law and Government. Is that a division of the police?"
"Not really, but we're on the same side. Tell me what happened to your brother,"
"Well, he always had a nose for investigation. When Garth and I first started dating, Ron had a bad feeling about Garth. Ron started to follow him around and before he disappeared he told me that he was on to something." Rita said as she went and sat down on the bed, "He told me that Garth was planning something big, that he was planning on breaking into an army site to steal the Amtin."
"Amtin? What's that?" Michael asked curious, as to what Garth was up to.
"I don't know, Ron never told me. He just kept on referring to it." Rita told him, "And now he's just gone!"
"How long ago did he disappear?"
"Well, the last time I saw him was two days ago. Usually, he runs off and I don't hear from him for a whole day or two but he usually calls me and tells me that he's all right." Rita stared at her lap, "This time I haven't heard anything from him. I'm so afraid that Garth might have killed him. Garth always disliked my brother…" Rita then started to sob.
Michael sat down next to her and embraced her. His mind was already trying to figure out what might have happened to Rita's brother. When Rita calmed down, Michael released her.
"Rita," Michael began, "Is there anything that your brother might have had that could help me figure out where he could have gone too?"
Rita thought a moment, "Actually, yes. His room might have something there that could help you." She took her purse and handed Michael a set of keys. "These are the keys to his apartment- 234 W. Washington Street. Apartment 3N."
Michael took the keys, "All right. I'll check it out. In the meantime, I want you to try and find out where Candy is at and make sure that she's all right. When you find her call me, okay?"
"Okay,"
With that Michael got up and headed out.
"Michael," Rita stopped him in his tracks.
He turned around and looked at her.
She smiled, "Thank you."
Michael smiled back, "Be careful."
"I will."
With that Michael turned and left the suite, with a new hope in his heart.
