Hidden in the Knight Part 8
By: D Anne Paris
The air was dry and hot and made Candy feel like she was in an oven. She and her grandmother were sitting in some chairs under a huge canopy in the middle of the desert. Other members of Garth's engineering team were scattered around the area preparing for the test. Candy couldn't sit still. A few times she tried to sabotage Goliath but each time she was almost caught by one of the engineers. None of her attempts worked and that made her even more irritated. She wanted desperately to warn Michael, and soon she found her chance. Elizabeth went over to one of the engineers and started to dictate to him what he should be doing. Slowly, and ever so casually, Candy walked over to the rec vehicle that was behind them. Quietly she went in and closed the door behind her and locked it. Peeking out the window, she saw Elizabeth was still preoccupied with the engineer. Grabbing the phone she dialed out KITT's number and prayed.
**
Michael felt the adrenaline rush through his system as he and KITT backed out of the semi and headed to the Valley of Fire. April checked out all of KITT's systems and even increased the power to make KITT more powerful. KITT was ready and Michael was also ready. He was going to get his daughter back and today was that day.
"Michael?"
"What is it, pal?"
"What kind of weapons do you think this Goliath has?"
Michael grinned, "Getting cold feet?"
"Michael, you know that I don't have feet."
"It's just a joke KITT. Trying to lighten the situation."
"It's not helping." A moment later KITT exclaimed, "Michael, I think Candy's calling!"
Michael felt like he just won a million. This time, he'd find out where she was and he'd get her out of there. "Patch it through."
"KITT?" Candy voice whispered.
"We're both here, sweetheart." Michael told her as he kept on driving. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," she whispered in the phone as she tried to stop her voice from quivering so much.
"Sweetheart, I'm going to get you out but I need you to tell me where you're at."
"I'm in the Valley of Fire but…" her voice started to quiver even more.
Michael felt his heart tear in two. He could tell she was hurting buy there was nothing he could do for her, "Baby, KITT and I will be there in about…"
"15 minutes 32 seconds." KITT told him.
"No, don't come here!" she urgently told him, "It's a trap. Goliath is all ready for you. He'll smash you to bits!"
"I doubt it." KITT said confidently.
"Don't worry about us." Michael reassured her as his grip on the wheel tightened. Garth was using her as the bait to catch him and KITT and Michael didn't like it at all.
"But the shell is…"
"We know. Candy, listen to me." He paused and then continued, "I want to know where exactly you are. Can you tell me that?"
Her voice started quivering again, "I'm in a van that's like a mini home. But I'm going to be outside under the tent with Grandma."
"Is that where you're suppose to be?" Michael asked her.
"Yeah, but I don't want to go there."
"Candy, you go and act just like you usually do, okay? Don't let them know that you've talked to me and you stay away from Garth, all right?"
Candy felt like crying. She wanted so much to be far away from this place and her father and grandmother. After yesterday she tried to avoid Garth at all costs and Elizabeth just drove her out of her mind. Now, Michael said that he'd rescue her but she knew that if he and KITT faced Goliath they would be in grave danger.
"Candy, are you still there?" Michael asked urgently.
"Yeah."
Michael's voice softened, "We'll bring you home, sweetheart. I promise."
Candy sighed at the though of coming back to the Foundation. It would be so great to be back in her own bedroom with all her stuff including her computer. "I miss home."
Michael wanted so much to hug her, "I know you do."
"Michael, we're almost at the Valley of Fire." KITT told him.
"Okay. Candy go back to where you're suppose to be and remember what I told you, okay?"
"Okay," she whispered to him. "I'll be waiting." With that she hung up the phone and looked out the window. Elizabeth was still talking to the engineer and it seemed that she was to occupied to notice Candace's disappearance. Slowly, Candy opened the door, creeped out, and closed the door quietly behind her. Casually, she walked around the area and studied everything. Deep down she knew that she had to do something to Goliath so that KITT would beat him. Looking at Goliath, she saw that the engineers were doing a final check on him and Garth was making sure that they didn't miss anything. She needed to do something! Michael and KITT would be here any minute and it was up to her to help them win. Thinking, she thought of the only thing that she could do at a short moments notice. Stowaway on Goliath and give Garth a hell of time while he was driving. But how? Slowly, she went up to Goliath and began to casually look over him.
"Is there something wrong, Candace?" Garth asked when he saw his daughter walk up and start looking over Goliath. He knew that she was planning something and he wanted to know what.
"No, I was just bored sitting there and I wanted to see Goliath again before the test." She lied.
Garth knew she was lying, he could see it in her eyes. He walked over to her and casually draped his arm around her shoulder, "Why don't you go with your grandmother. I'm sure she'll find something useful for you to do."
Before Candy could reply a man shouted from one of the computers, "He's coming Mr. Knight!"
Garth felt the surge of joy at the anticipation of a battle. "Let the test begin!" he rumbled to everyone as they started to clear away from Goliath.
Candy saw her chance as the commotion started. Quickly, she ran to the passenger side of Goliath, grabbed on to the hand rail there and pulled herself up onto the step. There, she looked inside and saw that there was no place inside that she could hide. Her only chance was to hang on that door then either open the door and climb in or climb in through the window. Candy decided to take her chances. If she didn't do this then her life would change for the worst. Preparing herself she noticed that the mirrors had her image. If Garth saw her then she wouldn't have a chance to help Michael. Slowly, she extended her hand and moved the mirror down. Now all Garth would see is the wheels rolling underneath Goliath. The driver's side door opened and Candy quickly pulled her hand away and braced herself for a rough ride.
"You're mine, Michael Knight." Garth growled as he slammed the door and started the engine. The massive truck started to move. Candy almost let go of the handrail when Garth sounded the horn twice. Still, she didn't let that phase her and she held on as Goliath started to accelerate even quicker. Soon she saw Michael and KITT in the distance as they slowly came closer towards Garth and Goliath.
**
"Michael, what is that!?" KITT exclaimed as he saw the massive beast driving down towards them.
"It's a truck!" Michael shouted as he stared at the enormous truck heading straight for them. "No wonder it seemed to easy. Well, let's show Goliath who's boss."
"Michael, there's someone hanging outside of Goliath." KITT said with alarm as they neared the truck.
Michael looked at Goliath and saw that there indeed was a small figure on the outside of the passenger door. "Can you detect who it is?" Michael asked him as Goliath was becoming bigger and bigger.
KITT stopped a moment and scanned the individual, "It's Candace!"
Michael ground his teeth, "What kind of game is Garth playing?"
"What ever kind it is, it's quite dangerous. We have to get Candy away from him. The odds of her being able to hold on…" KITT told Michael.
"Don't tell me the odds." Michael interrupted as he started to think of how to rescue her, "The only way to save her is to drive right by that thing and grab her. Think you can hold it steady long enough to let me grab her?"
"For Candace I'd fly to the moon."
Michael kept his eyes on the road. "This is going to be tricky."
**
Michael and KITT were now less then a few meters away from Goliath and Candy knew that she had to act soon before it was too late. Grabbing the door handle she tried open the door. Pulling the handle, she discovered that it was locked! KITT was closing in on Goliath fairly quickly and Candy tried to think of what to do. Looking at the window she discovered it to also be closed. Candy couldn't believe her luck or in this case her inexperience to the situation. A huge ramble was heard from above Goliath and Candy felt her skin crawl as she heard a missile explode. He's shooting at them! Her mind screamed. Candy looked ahead and saw that KITT was all right and was coming one again towards Goliath. Candy looked up and decided that if she couldn't sabotage Goliath from the inside then she'd have to do it from the outside.
Taking a deep breath she slid to the back of the cabin and started to walk up the ladder. Another rumble was heard and a huge boom followed. Fearing the worse, Candy didn't look to see if KITT and Michael were okay. When she got to the top she saw the missile launchers and began to search for any kind of cables. A missile on the far left launcher was activated and it shot out of the launcher and towards the front. Taking a quick glance, Candy saw that it too missed KITT who swerved in front of Goliath and then drove behind him. Turning her attention back to the launchers, she quickly assessed that all the cables were neatly hidden and concealed. Leave it to Garth to make sure no one would sabotage his precious Goliath. Candy looked at the launchers again and realized that her only chance would be to take the rockets out. The only problem was that if she started to take out one and Garth decided to launch it then the rocket's heat could burn her hands or worse yet it could blow up in her face. Taking a deep breath, she slowly began to remove the rocket to her right. Twisting it, she discovered that it was heavier then she originally thought. Grabbing the rocket she slowly slid it out of the launcher. When she got it out she breathed a sigh of relief. Still, now she had to figure out what to do with it. An idea then struck her- what if she threw it in between the junction of the cabin and the trailer? It could work. The rocket creaked as she pulled it around the top of the cabin. Candy knew that Garth heard it and she hoped that Michael and KITT would preoccupy him long enough for her to throw the rocket down. I hope this works. She mentally stated. With her hands she held on to the front of the cabin to brace herself for the impact. Using her feet she slowly pushed the rocket off the top of the cabin.
**
"Michael, what on earth is Candace doing?" KITT asked as he watched Candy climb up to the rocket launchers.
"Oh, no." Michael muttered, "She's not thinking of…"
They both watched as she looked over the launcher and then slowly start to pull out a rocket.
"KITT, get as close as you can to her."
Pushing the auto cruise, Michael opened the sunroof and was about to sit on top of the seat when KITT jerked hard to the right, causing Michael to hit the door.
"KITT! Keep it steady!"
"I can't. Garth is making it very hard to keep steady."
Michael tried again to sit up on the seat but again KITT moved hard to the right. Angered, Michael decided that he better try a different approach.
"Michael, look!" KITT yelled.
Michael looked in Candy's position and saw her pushing the rocket off of the cabin.
"Oh, my…Candy NO!!"
**
Garth soaked in the pleasure as he fired the rockets at the black car. His revenge would be completely very shortly and he and Goliath would be victorious! KITT swerved and went behind Goliath.
"That won't stop me." Garth muttered under his breath as he turned and tried to go after KITT.
KITT was quicker and soon Garth lost sight of him. Glancing at the right side mirror he discovered that it wasn't aligned properly. Cursing, Garth swerved to the right assuming that Michael was trying to get on Goliath. He wouldn't let Michael Knight win. Turning left, he accelerated and tried to get a bearing on Michael. Still, he had no luck and so he swerved again to the right then to the left. Before he could swerve again he heard a loud screeching sound above the cabin.
"What the…!?"
**
Michael drove KITT beside Goliath but before he could say anything Candy pushed the rocket over. The rocket exploded causing the trailer to separate from the cabin and caused Candy to be flung onto the ground a few feet away. KITT was hit by the loose trailer and spun twice before stopping. The cabin with Garth was charred behind and looked badly damaged but it still kept driving on.
"KITT!" Michael yelled, as he saw the cabin head straight towards Candy's unconscious body, "We gotta block Garth!"
"Michael, the impact from that monster could…"
"We got to take that chance." With that Michael floored the accelerator and KITT drove into Goliath's path.
**
Garth felt Goliath rock in the blast and saw the trailer blown away. To his surprise a small child was also blown a few meters ahead of him. He glanced at the body and discovered it to be Candy.
"Damn you, Michael Knight!" He cursed as he tried to gain control of the cabin, which would hit Candy's body any minute. Hitting the brakes he discovered they weren't working. Grabbing the wheel he tried to turn left but the explosion also damaged the steering. Goliath was heading straight for Candy and Garth couldn't do anything to stop him.
**
"Michael, the only way we can stop Goliath from hitting Candy is if we hit Goliath in the side and pushed him away." KITT told Michael as Michael neared Goliath.
"Then, that's just what we'll do." Michael said as he aimed for Goliath.
KITT began to inform Michael of the distance, "15 feet. 10, 5.." The rest of his words were cut short as Michael rammed KITT into Goliath full force. The great beast was pushed a few feet and then it tipped to it's side and rested there.
Michael stared at the unmoving Goliath and saw that he was not a threat anymore. Still, they were not all that victorious. From his driver's seat, he already saw that KITT's hood was bent upward meaning that KITT was probably severely damaged. Forgetting the damage for a moment Michael quickly, got out of KITT and ran over to Candy's unmoving body.
"Candy, sweet heart it's Michael, can you hear me?" he asked as he tried to find a pulse. He found a weak pulse and her breathing was somewhat shallow. Looking her over, he saw that her arm was broken but other then that she looked fine. Still, she could have damaged her spine and Michael didn't want to try and move her.
"KITT?" Michael asked through his com link, "Can you get her vitals?"
"Michael." KITT's muffled voice came through, "Most of my systems are severely damaged. I can't access anything."
Michael felt hopeless. His little girl and his bet friend were both badly injured and he was stuck in the middle of a desert. The sun was battering down and the heat was very intense. Having no choice, Michael gently picked Candy up and brought her back to KITT. Opening the door and he gently placed her in the passenger seat and pushed the seat back causing Candy to lay horizontally in the seat. Glancing at Goliath, he saw Garth, battered and bruised, trying to climb out of the toppled semi.
"Garth!" Michael yelled as he ran over to the semi. Garth was now on top of the wreckage and was glaring down at Michael.
"You should have died, Michael. That should be you lying there unconscious!" he said pointing in KITT's direction where Candy was laying.
"You know what, Garth? I've had about enough of you!"
Garth climbed down and stared at Michael, "You took everything from me and I'm going to make you pay!" He swung and punched Michael in the chin but Michael didn't fall down. Instead, he swung his arm and knocked Garth in the stomach. Garth swung back and Michael moved aside causing Garth to loose his footing. Michael then knocked Garth in the back, which caused Garth to fall to the ground. Flipping Garth over, Michael hit him three times until Garth was soon unconscious. It was over, the reign of Garth's terror was finally over.
Walking over to KITT, Michael leaning inside and looked at Candy. He needed to get her to a hospital and fast.
"KITT, is your communication system damaged also?"
"Yes," KITT's muffled voice responded. "My primary operations are also damaged."
"Meaning, we're stuck here?"
"Yes." KITT told him. "But Michael…"
"What?"
"Isn't that the FLAG semi?"
Michael turned around and saw a sight that he hoped wasn't a mirage. The Foundation's semi was heading towards their direction from the distance.
"I have never been so glad to see them."
"Nor have I." KITT added joyously.
