In an attempt to break Tad and Dixie up, Palmer and Opal hired Marian to make it look like Tad was being unfaithful. One day, Dixie and Opal walked into the health spa to find Tad, dressed in only a robe and holding a glass of what appeared to be champagne, reclining on the side of a hot tub, in which a scantily-clad Marian was soaking. In reality, Tad was dressed in a robe only because Marian had "accidentally" pulled him into the hot tub, soaking all his clothes; he was wearing the robe while his clothes were being dried, and his glass was filled with ginger ale, not champagne. However, Dixie, already feeling insecure about her ablility to hold Tad’s interest (she was worried that she wasn’t beautiful or sophisticated enough, compared to the glamorous women he came face to face with daily in his job as a PI), immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion and stormed off, refusing to hear Tad’s explanation.
Opal and Palmer, delighted with the results produced by their little scheme, continued to mess with Dixie’s mind, convincing her that Tad had done something really and truly awful. Thankfully, Tad and Dixie’s best friends, Nico and Cecily, took matters into their own hands and tricked our beloved duo into accompanying them to New York. Once there, Tad and Dixie found themselves alone in the hotel room, and ended up talking…
Dixie: You know, the last time we were in a hotel room, we were running from Adam with Junior.
Tad: I remember.
D: I’m going to go wash up. (she gets up and heads towards the bathroom, but just as she reaches the door, she pauses and looks back.) Tad?
T: Yeah?
D: Nothing. (having decided to stay quiet, she continues her path into the bathroom. A few seconds later, she re-emerges)What I was going to say was, do you think we should call off the…the… (she stutters, hesitating)
T: The wedding?
D: Yeah.
T: (somewhat uneasy about the question) I don’t know, I don’t know.
D: I mean, I don’t know either. I guess it depends on something.
T: I don’t know. (still confused, Dix heads back into the bathroom. After a few moments, Tad calls out) Dixie?
D: (emerging once again from the bathroom) What?
T: Do you think we should call off the wedding?
D: I don’t know.
T: Uh, why not?
D: It depends, doesn’t it?
T: On what?
D: I don’t know.
Emotions churning, she flees into the bathroom once again. Tad paces around the room, obviously contemplating his next move. Finally, he seems to come to a decision, and calls out
T: I love you!
D: (running from the bathroom, face sopping wet, carrying a towel, rather surprised by what Tad said) What? What?
T: (mustering courage) I said…I wanted to tell you, that this is the most important moment of our relationship.
D: Yeah. You know, this could be the end. Unless we do something. (for a few loaded moments, they simply stare at each other. Finally, Dixie breaks the silence) Tad?
T: (breaking his gaze with Dixie, he steps forward, takes the towel from her hands, and begins to dry her face) You’d better wipe off your face—you’re going to catch a cold.
D: (looking kind of embarrassed by Tad’s pampering, she takes the towel from him) That’s good, thanks.
T: (stepping back and sitting down on the bed across from Dixie) Why don’t you trust me?
D: I don’t know.
T: No, that’s not a reason. That’s not a reason. I need a reason.
D: I don’t know, Tad. I don’t know. (getting all choked up, barely controlling the tears) It’s just, I’ve been listening to what everybody says about you. And Marian, and your affair with her, and what you did to her daughter. I mean, I know you, I know that you’re different, I know…
T: (looking dejected) Well, then, if you know that I’m different, then why can’t you have faith in me?
D: I tried, I tried. What do you think? I walked in there when you were with Marian…
T: I know—I was there. I know how bad it looked. I realized what it looked like. But I tried to explain it to you. I tried as hard as I could. I chased you all over that spa. (looking even more hurt and dejected) But you didn’t listen to me. But what hurt me the worst was that you acted like you wanted to believe the worst.
D: (barely controlling the tears) I didn’t. I didn’t.
T: Believing in each other is the most important thing two people can have, so if you’re going to be so easily swayed by what other people say then we don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell.
D: (trying valiantly to make him understand) No, Tad, you’re not looking at it from my side. That’s not fair.
T: (getting frustrated) Yes, I am. I do. I do! (truly shouting at this point, he looks immediately regretful) I’m sorry, but I do. I know the number other people do on you. I know how hard it is to believe in me. I know all about my past. But if you’re going to marry me you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet and look at me with your eyes and your heart, and you’ve got to decide what I am now. You’ve got to have faith in me. I love you. I made a commitment to you. (looking at her pleadingly) Why can’t you have faith in that?
D: (getting all choked up again, tears falling down her cheeks) Because it’s scary. I mean, you have this profession, Tad, where you hang around all these beautiful and glamorous women, and it scares me. I don’t know what I’m going to do. (rising from the bed, she walks past him, clutching the towel to her chest protectively) I don’t know what’s going to happen to us after we’re married.
T: (clearly amazed, he rises and stands behind her) Apparently it’s not just about me.
D: (turning to face him, she tries to express her fears) No, it’s not just about you—it’s also about me. I feel like I’m not going to be able to give you anything, or give you what you want, or what you need…
T: No, you are, you do.
D: But Tad…
T: No! NO! I love you. I’m crazy about you. You’re everything I want; you’re everything I ever will want. Really. And believe it or not, I’m just as scared about making you happy. Yeah, I’m petrified, because as far as I’m concerned, you’re the best person who’s ever walked the face of the planet, by far, and therefore, you deserve the best. And contrary to what I might say sometimes, I fall a little short of the money—you know what I’m saying? (sincerely) As far as I’m concerned, if loving you half as much as I do is the best, then kiddo, we’ve got it made. (They gaze at each other, the love they share evident in their eyes) You want a hug?
D: (nodding, smiling through her tears) I want a hug.
T: Good, ‘cause I could use a hug.
Almost laughing, they launch themselves into each other’s arms and embrace tightly. As they’re embracing, Cecily and Nico walk in.
Nico: (cracking a huge grin) I guess we gave them enough time.
Cecily: (grinning widely) Well, guys, is the wedding back on?
T: (breaking his grip on Dixie only long enough to answer) Yeah, it’s on. Now would you close the door on your way out?
Dixie laughs, and they throw their arms around each other again and hold on for dear life.
