Episode Summary, December 11 & 12, 1995 | Transcribed by Salem |
Jack and Jennifer are both at the Red Dragon Inn in Aremid. Jen has just finished having a heart to heart with Hope, while Jack has been talking with Bo. Jack had asked Jennifer to help him cover the story of Tony's murder but Jen has refused. She walks down the stairs and catches Jack's eye.
Jack -- Listen, Jen. I wondered if you ah . . .
Jennifer -- (keeps walking) Excuse me, Jack. (she walks past him)
Jack -- Yeah, it was a bad idea.
Jennifer exits the pub and meets up with Kristen outside. She wants Jen to work with Jack so John will get a fair deal in the press. Jen is apprehensive but . . .
Jack in the meantime has found a state police officer and is talking to him at a table.
Jack -- You're saying that John Black's fingerprints are on the gun. How did this, How is this possible?
Officer -- Is this guy a friend of yours?
Jennifer enters and sees Jack at the table.
Jack -- That's irrelevant. John Black did not do this.
Officer -- All the evidence points to him.
Jack -- I've got to help him.
Officer -- The biggest favour you could do is get him a good attorney. He's sure gonna need it.
The officer gets up and exits and Jennifer moves towards Jack, who stands.
Jennifer -- We need to talk.
Jack -- But, no , but I thought that you . . .
Jennifer -- Yes I am furious with you. But John and Kristen need help and I intend to do whatever I can.
Jack -- Well what's this got to do with me?
Jennifer -- We are going to have to work together on this story to ensure that John gets fair treatment from the press. If that's okay with you?
Jack -- Yeah, it's okay. Sure it is. I mean working together on a story with you is gonna be . . .
Jennifer -- No, it's not. It's not going to be just like old times. Old times are gone.
Jack and Jennifer sit down at the table.
Jennifer -- Our relationship will remain purely professional.
Jack -- I understand.
Jennifer -- I'm not going to let my anger toward you get in the way of the more important issue of clearing John's name.
Jack -- You think John is innocent?
Jennifer -- Absolutely. I don't even have a doubt in my mind. Why would you even ask such a thing?
Jack -- I just think that it is interesting that you and your husband are both on opposite sides of this.
Jennifer -- We're not.
Jack -- Right. But I thought Peter was convinced of John's guilt.
Jennifer -- He's torn up over his brother's death and he doesn't know John as well as we do.
Jack -- Well let's just hope that the person the attorney general names to prosecute the case is a little bit more impartial that Peter.
Jennifer chooses to ignore Jack's comments about Peter.
Jack -- (leans in and whispers) Listen. Jude St. Clair has to be the one who murdered Tony.
Jennifer -- But there's no evidence against him and the evidence against John is overwhelming.
Jack -- There is only one way to clear John.
Jennifer -- How?
Jack -- We've got to find St. Clair.
Jennifer -- Well I know that he is in town. He attacked Hope after Tony was shot. Do you think that he is clever enough to get through police road blocks?
Jack -- Clever? He's clever enough to hide a drug operation at the Blue Moon. That's why Bo and Hope went there in the first place undercover.
Jennifer -- I know. They think that he's working for someone else.
Jack -- Somebody with more money.
Jennifer -- And more power. I just can't believe that Tony would be involved in an operation like that. He always refused to get involved in Stefano's businesses.
Jack -- Yeah, I know. But people do change, you know.
Jennifer -- Alright, even if Tony did change, why would you kill a DiMera? It's like signing your own death warrant.
Jack -- Well not any more. Stefano has amnesia. He's not going to hurt anyone.
Jennifer -- Yeah, unless he regains his memory.
Jack -- But Mike says that there is no chance for that. Whoever killed Tony is probably counting on that fact.
Jennifer -- Yeah, you're right.
Jack -- Well we'll solve this case. It'll be fun. You and me working day and night . . .
Jennifer -- (angered but still whispering) What are you . . . This isn't going to be fun. It's not going to be anything like that. Our job is not to set up a little investigation, it's to keep the media from ruining John's name and reputation.
Jack -- I know that we can prove that John is innocent.
Jennifer -- Look, let the police do that. Besides it might be a moot point anyway.
Jack -- But we just looked at all the evidence that the police have and you have to admit that it does not look very good for John.
Jennifer -- Alright, but the gunpowder test. If it comes back negative, that could be the first step to clearing him. In fact, I'm going back to the house. Those results should be back by now.
Jack -- I'll go with you.
Jennifer gets up and begins to walk out as Jack grabs his leather jacket and runs to catch up.
Jack and Jennifer interrupt Peter and Kristen. Peter lets them know that the gunpowder tests prove that John fired a gun that night.
Jack -- No, this can't be!
Jennifer -- Kristen, I don't know what to say.
Jack -- There's got to be some kind of mistake, right?
Kristen gets upset at Peter's accusations just as Marlena, John, Abe and Stefano enter with the news that the second test confirms the gunpowder residue. John speculates that he is being framed.
Jack -- I think he's being framed and someone planted the evidence.
Peter -- I don't believe this. If we had eyewitnesses, you would all claim that they were hallucinating. (he rushes out of the room)
Jennifer -- Peter, Peter.
Jennifer follows and Jack follows her. They all catch up with
eachother on the grounds and Peter and Jack argue about Jude's involvement
in the shooting. Peter will hear nothing of it. He
believes he has the killer.
Jack -- Just remember something Peter, John is innocent until proven guilty.
Peter -- Oh I intend to prove him guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Jack -- (he is surprised) You?
Peter -- That's right.
Jennifer -- (shocked) What are you talking about?
Peter -- The attorney general has appointed me to prosecute the case.
Jack -- You can't be serious about this.
Jennifer -- Why would you agree to prosecute?
Peter -- Because I want to make sure that this case isn't botched up, Jen. I have to make sure John is punished for killing Tony. My first order of business is . . . to have John arrested for "Murder One." (he walks away)
Jennifer -- Peter wait, Peter.
Jack -- Jennifer just let him go. You are married to a very vindictive and narrow-minded man.
Jennifer -- Don't make this about Peter. He wants to make sure that Tony's murderer is punished. He's just looking out for Tony.
Jack -- And I'm just looking out for John. There's no way he's going to get a fair trial with Peter as the prosecutor. He's on a witch hunt. He's not going to stop until someone burns.
Jennifer and Peter meet up in the Blake house and try to discuss their difference of opinion. Peter tells her that she is too trusting and uses Jack as an example of her blind faith and resulting disappointment. Jack overhears this and enters when Peter leaves.
Jack -- Don't listen to him Jennifer.
Jennifer -- He's right though. Sometimes I don't see people for what they really are and I end up getting hurt. But I promise that I won't let that happen again.
Jack -- (under his breath) I'm sorry, Jen. But someday you are going to see Peter for what he really is.
And Jennifer does see Peter for what he really is -- in about one year!
