Episode Summary | transcribed by Mystic |
This took place around March 1995. Jack and Gina (before she
knew she was Hope) met up with each other at the Cheating Heart. Earlier
in the show, they ran into each other at the pier. They talked for a little
bit, then Jack said he wanted to be alone and left. Now Gina is at the
Cheating Heart, sitting alone and minding her own business. Then
some strange guy starts giving her a hard time. Jack shows up, sees this
and walks up to them.
Jack - (to the guy) Hey! Sorry pal, but she doesn't want to make any friends.
[Gina looks grateful that Jack is there. The guy leaves]
Gina - Thanks.
Jack - Hey, that guy should be thanking me. If he'd known you were a cop, he'd have his face on the floor in about two seconds. I think it would be a different story!
Gina - (laughs) Yeah, well I try to save my police skills for the bad guys, you know? (the bartender shows up) Can I buy you a beer?
Jack - Sure, if I can pick up the next round. (sits down)
Gina - You got a deal.
Jack - All right.
Gina - So, I thought you needed some time alone. Hmm? What are you doing here?
Jack - (smiles) Yeah. Uh.... well, I was just passing by. Heard the music, laughter, and I decided I really didn't want to be alone.
Gina - Yeah, the music and the laughter had the same effect on me too.
[Jack nods. The bartender arrives and brings them their beers.]
Jack - (looks at her) Thanks for the brew!
Gina - (smiles) Cheers! (they clink and both take a sip, looking at each other)
Jack - Hey, wanna go shoot some pool?
Gina - Ummm, I'm not very good at this.
Jack - Well, that's great! 'Cause I like to win. Come on! (smiles and gets up)
Gina - Oh yeah?
Jack - Yeah, let's go.
[they walk over to the pool table]
Jack - All right, ladies first. (he hands her a pool stick)
[She points the stick at the ball, but Jack stops her and shows her the right way to hold the stick. She gets it right and hits the ball]
Gina - Look at that!
Jack - You got the touch!
Gina - I do, I do!
Jack - You know, I think in a previous life you may have played against the best.
Gina - Yeah, if I could just remember another life. (she walks to another side of the table)
Jack - (follows her, looking guilty) Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to remind you about that.
Gina - No Jack, it's okay. I don't need to be reminded. I live it every day. I just have to accept the fact that I may never find out about my past. So I have to concentrate on starting a new one.
Jack - Well, I'm just..... I'm sorry I upset you.
Gina - It's okay. You don't have to apologize. I just have these moments sometimes, that's all.
Jack - Mm hmm.
Gina - So I have to find things to distract myself.
Jack - Okay. Well, why don't you concentrate on putting that 4 ball right there in the side pocket? (he smiles)
Gina - (smiles too) Okay. (she hits the 4 ball and it goes in)
Jack - Nice shot! Nice shot!
Gina - (laughs) I did it again!
--------------------------------------
[Jack is concentrating on hitting a ball into a corner pocket. Gina sort of leans over the corner pocket]
Gina - I'm not distracting you, am I?
[Jack doesn't say anything, and continues to concentrate. Finally, he hits the ball and it goes in the corner pocket. He looks up and smiles.]
Gina - That was luck! That was pure luck! That's all it was.
Jack - (smiles) No, that was talent. That was sheer talent.
Gina - (walks over to him) I wanna rack these up 'cause I wanna get
even with you.
Jack - No way. Maybe in about two years. Well, tell you what. I'll give you twenty years.
Gina - No way. I had an expert teacher and I'm gonna put everything together he taught me and wipe you out!
Jack - (laughs) You're a lot of fun, you know that?
Gina - (pauses) Thanks...
Jack - (looks at her for awhile) What's wrong?
Gina - I don't know. I just never thought of myself like that. It's nice to hear.
Jack - Yeah, well you brought me out of my lousy mood and I appreciate it.
Gina - (looks at him, clearly enjoying his company) I'm gonna get some more beer. You rack 'em up!
Jack - Okay.
[He starts putting the balls together when he notices a couple slow
dancing and looking very much in love. Gina brings the beers over to their
table. She looks back at Jack and sees him hitting the balls one
after another, visibly angry. Then she also sees the couple dancing.
She walks over to Jack]
Gina - Kind of reminds you of Jennifer and Peter, huh? I know how that feels Jack.
Jack - (still hitting those balls) Every time I think of Peter Blake, I wanna slam him against the wall............. Damn it!! (he takes the pool stick and breaks it in half against his leg. This makes a scene and everyone in the bar looks at him. Then Jack throws the 2 pieces of the stick on the pool table. He's really mad here)
Bartender - Hey!! Hey, what are you doing?!!
Jack - Look, I'm sorry I broke your pool cue. I'll pay for it. (he storms away to the other side of the bar)
Gina - (follows him) Jack!
Jack - Look, I'm sorry I embarrassed you.
Gina - Hey, look. You need to work through some of this anger!
Jack - Yeah, yeah you're right. It's keeping this stuff bottled up that cost me my marriage.
Gina - No, what cost you your marriage is you walked out on her Jack.
Jack - (looks irritated) Do you know what happened?
Gina - No, I don't.
Jack - No?
Gina - No.
Jack - When I was young, I made a terrible mistake. I was selfish, I was ambitious, I didn't care about anything else but myself. And I just signed away these papers, and I found out a few years later that these papers were responsible for this toxic waste dump which ends up making daughter sick.
Gina - But you didn't know!
Jack - No, but I should've known!! I should've been responsible about
it. I never took responisibility for anything. If I messed up, it was always
somebody else's fault. But then I found myself staring the truth
right in the eye. And I realized that I couldn't face Jennifer. I was
too ashamed to see the disappointment in her face.
Gina - (nods) The disappointment that you couldn't bare on your own.
Jack - Now why am I the last one to realize that, huh?!!
Gina - (looks sympathetic) Jack.... Look, I'm an outsider looking in but you seem to have a pretty good perspective on it now. So why don't you start a new life for yourself?
Jack - (looks her right in the eye) I want a life with Jennifer.
Gina - (pauses) She's not married yet.
Jack - (sighs and puts his hand over his face) I can't just make her love me again. It has to be her choice, and right now her choice is to be..... with Peter. [he looks really, really sad]
---------------------------------
[Jack and Gina are walking back to their table]
Gina - Has Jennifer seen any change in you?
Jack - (thinks) Yes..... I think so.
Gina - That's positive. (they sit down)
Jack - Well, if I don't mess up and do something stupid like break a pool cue again...... I just have to bite the bullet. Just stop thinking about Peter with Jennifer.
Gina - (shakes her head) Jack, that's impossible to stop thinking about the person you love...... Especially if they're with someone else.
Jack - Yeah, especially that Peter is doing everything he can to remind me that he's the man with Jennifer now. (Gina looks down) Oh, listen to me, ripping away at Peter. He's probably a friend of yours.
Gina - Not really. Although he has been nice to me.
Jack - So you think he's a nice guy.
Gina - I guess you don't.
Jack - I think Peter is as slick and as dangerous as Stefano. I think they're still a team. I just wish I could prove it to Jennifer.
Gina - (thinks) You know, I'm really close to Jennifer. And I honestly don't want to interfere in her life, but God, I just wish there was something I could do to help you.
Jack - (stares at her with admiration) Look at you. You've got much tougher problems. But here you are.... concerned with me.
Gina - (smiles) I owe something to the man who shared his pool secrets with me, don't I?!
Jack - (smiles) Yeah...
Gina - (after awhile) Do you think it's possible to prove that Peter's involved with Stefano somehow?
Jack - (thinks) Maybe not... But I know in my heart that it's true. That's why I don't have any qualms about breaking up Peter's romance with Jennifer.
Gina - Then maybe she'll come back to you.
Jack - (sighs) That's just a dream.
Gina - Hey... (she puts her hand over his, and Jack looks at her) Some dreams do come true. If Jennifer would just give you a chance, she'd see what a sweet, caring man you are.
Jack - (pauses) Thanks Hope.
[Gina looks stunned that he just called her "Hope"]
