This is the September 22, 1997 episode when Jack discovers that Jennifer is working undercover at the prison. By the way, this is also Mark’s second-last episode as Jack. He actually had some really good scenes in this show. His last episode was a big joke because he hardly had very many scenes and then he was forced to do that shower switch scene. Anyway, here’s the summary of this episode…
(Transcribed by Sandra)
Jack is lying down on his prison bunk sleeping. Jennifer walks up to the foot of his bed, dressed as a jailguard. He opens his eyes a bit and notices someone there. He looks down at the floor and notices someone standing there with black shoes. He has this look on his face like "what does the guard want with me now?" He begins to sit up to speak to the guard, unaware of who that guard is. That’s when Jennifer makes her move – she leans forward, grabs him, and plants a kiss on his lips. Jack is absolutely horrified and struggles to push himself away from this guard, still unaware of who he’s kissing. That’s when he finally notices the guard is really Jennifer. They both smile at each other. They wrap their arms around each other and start kissing. Scene ends.
Next scene, Jack & Jennifer are still kissing. But two seconds later, Jack furiously pushes Jennifer off of him as it suddenly dawns on him that SHE is in his prison cell when she shouldn’t be there.
Jack (pushing Jennifer away from him but still holding her) - What are you doing here?!
Jennifer (playfully laughs and grabs Jack to kiss him again) - Jack! Would you like another demonstration?
Jack (pushes Jennifer away from him and holding her shoulders) - Are you crazy?!
Jennifer (still laughing) - Jack! You should have seen the look on your face – it was priceless!
Jack (finally lets go of Jenn and sounds furious) - Jenn, what are you doing here dressed in this guard’s uniform?
Jennifer (still smiling and presents herself) - I’m a guard, Jack. I work here now.
Jack looks shocked and horrified. Scene ends.
Next scene, Jack and Jennifer are still standing apart from each other in his prison cell. Jack looks mad.
Jack - You’re working here?!
Jennifer (still smiling) - Yeah! Isn’t it great?
Jack is mad and has his hands on his waist. He’s not amused.
Jennifer - I mean, I’m just a relief guard. I’m not full-time yet but..
She stops talking because she notices Jack is definitely not as excited about this as she is. She turns around and Jack walks towards the entryway to his prison cell to see if anyone’s coming. Jennifer is looking ahead while Jack is doing that and rolls her eyes as if to say "Uh oh! I’m in trouble now…"
Jack returns to Jennifer, still mad and confused.
Jack - Yeah, have you lost your mind? Why?
Jennifer (trying to smile but seems flustered with Jack) - So that I can help you get information for your prison expose story, Jack. I’m using the guard as my cover.
Jack (sounds a bit calmer but still mad) - Right, Jenn. I told you I didn’t want you getting involved with that.
Jennifer - Come on, Jack. I can help you. We’re a team! (she tries to put her hands on him, and he pushes himself away from her)
Jack - No, we’re not a team! I’m here… I’m in prison for life. There’s no future for us. We don’t.. we don’t have any hope.
Jennifer (sounds frustrated) - Will you let me speak about this please?
Jack looks at her and doesn’t say anything for a couple seconds. He’s thinking…
Jack - No. Just go! (he points to the exit to his prison cell). Get out now before you’re found out!!
Jennifer (sounds serious) - You’re gonna listen to me, Jack. First of all, I understand all your concerns and I respect them. (Jack nods his head and is listening carefully to her, but he still looks like he’s not going to be convinced to agree to this. He looks really worried about her) I really do. But you have to know that when I’ve made up my mind to do something, I’m gonna do it. Nothing’s gonna change it. Now I have already infiltrated the inner ranks of the staff…
Jack - Wait, Jennifer do you have any…
Jennifer - Wait I’m working it… I’m gonna be in the perfect position to get inside information. (Jack looks at her and seems very worried and concerned. Jennifer’s voice becomes more loving towards Jack) And Jack, the best thing is that you and I are gonna be seeing a lot of each other. We get to be together a lot. (her voice sounds serious again) Now I’m not going back. I’m gonna help you on this story and that’s final.
Jack doesn’t say anything to her. He looks like he knows he can’t win with her. But he still looks really concerned. Scene ends.
Next scene, Jack talks to Jennifer and still sounds mad with her.
Jack - So how did you get a job working here?
Jennifer (smiles) - I’ll have you know that I’m very qualified.
Jack (mad) - Jenn, you have zero experience at police work.
Jennifer (smiles suggestively and puts her arms around him) - But all kinds of talent, Jack..
Jennifer starts to push Jack back towards his bed. I guess we know what she was referring to when she said "talents" - LOL! Jack is not amused and is continuing to put some sense into Jennifer’s head.
Jack - Right, Jenn, do you realize that it is totally unethical for you to have a job guarding your husband?
Jennifer’s still smiling and rolls her eyes. Jennifer seems frustrated because she wants to have fun, and Jack won’t play ;-) She leans away from him.
Jack (sounds serious) - Do you realize that there’s no prison warden in the world that would allow that? Now how did you pull this off?
Jennifer - I pretended I was Hope.
Jack (confused) - You what?
Jennifer (smiles) - I used Hope’s credentials as an ex-cop.
Jack (has his mouth wide open and looks completely shocked. He says with a fake half-smile on his face) - Oh… oh, so Hope went along with this?!
Jennifer - Well, not really. I mean she’s out of town so I couldn’t really ask her but.. (Jack nods his head and is looking at Jennifer as though she’s lost her mind) I’m sure she would have gone along with it. Grandma did…
Now Jack is really surprised.
Jack (laughs sarcastically to play along with Jennifer. I think he wants her to be "committed" to an institution - LOL!) - Oh, so Alice is in on this too?
Jennifer (really laughing) - She’s been terrific, Jack. I had to use Abe as a reference..
Jack is playing along with Jennifer and nods his head, is smiling and goes "yeah.." to urge Jennifer to continue her story…
Jennifer - … and umm… so she went down to Abe’s office and when the assistant warden called Abe she pretended she was his assistant and gave me a glowing recommendation.
(Jack is really smiling now and is almost laughing) - Yeah, I can’t believe this…
Jennifer laughs because she thinks Jack has been won over by her story.
Jack turns around so he isn’t looking at Jennifer. He has this bewildered look on his face as if to say "My wife has lost her mind. How can I get her to snap out of it?" LOL! Jennifer puts her hands on Jack’s shoulder..
Jennifer - It’s perfect, Jack!
Jack suddenly turns around and sounds mad again
Jack (begins to push Jennifer out of the room) - No, it’s insane! You’re outta here right now!
Jennifer pushes herself away from Jack.
Jennifer - No wait! You can’t do that!
Jack (mad and pointing at Jennifer) - Oh yes I can! All I have to do is yell to a guard, say "this is my wife," you’re bounced outta here so fast, your wig’s gonna fall off…
Jennifer - JACK, NO!!
Jack - Yes! No argument! You’re outta here!
Jennifer (really mad) - No! When I have done what I came to do and gotten what I came to get, then I will leave, and not before. (Jennifer walks away, but Jack is still talking to her very angrily)
[Okay, that comment sounds really funny considering we know exactly what Jennifer came to "get" at the prison ;-) Too bad it involved the other Jack and not this one - LOL!]
Jack - Oh, you think I’m bluffing?
TC walks in and asks "What’s going on here?!" Jennifer looks really worried because she thinks Jack is about to blow her cover. Scene ends.
Jack & Jennifer are standing near TC. They both have their arms folded. Jack is staring at Jennifer and looks mad. Jennifer has her back to TC and she looks really worried.
TC - What’s going on, Williams?
Jennifer turns around to speak to TC.
Jennifer - Nothing.
TC - There’s an awful lot of yelling for nothing going on. Why are you talking to this inmate?
Jennifer pauses to think of an explanation. She looks very concerned but tries to keep calm to prevent her cover from being blown. Jack looks at her and feels sorry. He doesn’t have the heart to expose Jenn’s cover to TC.
Jack - She told me to clean up my cell.
Jennifer (looks relieved and plays along, and has an authoritative sound to her voice) - Yeah. This place is a pigsty.
Jack (sounds mad) - I didn’t like the way she said it. (he looks at Jennifer angrily) I still don’t!
TC (scolding Jack) - You do as you’re told, Deveraux! Just because Miss Williams is a trainee doesn’t mean you can mouth off to her! And if she isn’t obeyed your privileges will be taken away.
Jennifer (trying to sound authoritative, but seems very phony) - Don’t worry! I’ll make this one obey me to the letter!
Jack looks angry and is staring at Jenn. TC is satisfied with Jennifer’s response and he leaves. As soon as TC leaves, Jennifer breathes a sigh of relief.
Jennifer (quietly to Jack) - Thanks.
Jack (whispering and sounds very concerned) - I just gave you enough time to get out of here before the guards find out what’s going on…
Jennifer (whispering) - They won’t find out.
Jack (sounds very serious and worried for Jennifer’s safety) - Jenn, this crazy scheme of yours could get really, really dangerous.
Jennifer - Does that mean you’re giving me the okay?
Jack turns away from Jennifer and doesn’t know what to say.
Jennifer - Jack, can we work on this story together?
Jack doesn’t say anything. He looks very worried and concerned. Scene ends.
Jennifer - Jack, please let me do this. I want to be a part of your life.
Jack (sounds emotionless) - Jenn, that’s impossible.
Jennifer (pauses for a second) - Jack, do you love me?
Jack is taken aback by that comment and pauses. Then he says "That’s not the point…"
Jennifer (tears are starting to form in her eyes) - I love you. You remember how long you waited for me to say those words.
Jack is really moved by what Jennifer is saying. He looks like he is beginning to cry. He looks away from Jennifer.
Jennifer - … what hell you went through, hoping that I would love you again, Jack. You pursued me with such feeling and such passion. I know that passion is still there.
Jack (tears in his eyes. Sounds really sad) - I was a free man, then, Jenn. Now I’m in prison for the rest of my life…
Jennifer - Jack, I know if we work on this story together, I know we can find a way to set you free. We can find proof that Peter is still alive..
Jack - That is such a long shot. I love you too much for you to just shackle yourself to me. You need to start your own life, Jenn, and just to build your own future.
Jennifer - My future is with you!
Jack looks so sad and concerned. What Jennifer is saying is really getting to him.
Jack - Jenn, don’t…
Jennifer (tears in her eyes) - Jack, I know how hard it is for you to be in here. But you can’t give up hope. You have to fight, not only for yourself, but for our love and for our daughter. She needs you so much, Jack…
Jack is really getting sad now. He is staring at the floor. He looks like he is trying to hold back the tears and shut off the pain that he’s feeling in his heart. But Jennifer’s words are making it impossible for him to do so…
Jennifer - …. I am fighting for her future as well as for ours. I want us to be a family again. I want us to be together.
Jack turns away from Jennifer and is silent. He can’t fight with her because she is saying things that he also believes, deep down in his heart. He folds his arms and stares at his prison wall. Jennifer walks towards the exit to Jack’s cell. As she is leaving she says to Jack, "Jack, with or without your blessing, I’m going through with this." Jennifer walks away. Jack turns around and peeks from the doorway to watch Jennifer walking away. He takes a deep breath and seems overwhelmed with mixed emotions.
Next scene, Jack is on the prison telephone with Alice. We don’t hear Alice’s side of the conversation.
Jack - No, I’m not angry with you, Mrs. Horton. I’m just angry at myself for not being firmer with Jennifer. (listens for Alice’s response) Well, even if she does avoid any physical danger, she’s still setting herself up for a heartbreak, don’t you see? There’s got to be something that I can do…. I can’t turn her in. I shouldn’t have even threatened that. Besides, she would just come up with some other way to help me…. I just saw that look in her eyes. She’s gonna go through with it. You know, a part of me is … is so happy at the thought of being able to see her every day.... But… (listens for Alice’s advice) Alright, alright. I won’t do anything yet. But could you do me a favor, Mrs. Horton? Tell Jennifer to be careful. This is a very, very dangerous game that she’s playing.
Next scene, Jennifer’s arrived home from prison. Travis is there and he’s curious as to where she’s been. Jennifer is being evasive. She’s about to reveal what she’s doing at the prison when Jack conveniently calls her on the telephone. Jack tells her that he wanted to warn her to be extra careful and not to tell anyone about her job at the prison. Jennifer says "okay". So Jennifer hangs up the phone and she doesn’t reveal anything to Travis.
Next scene, TC is grabbing Jack by the back of his shirt and shoving him into his prison cell. TC is standing near him yelling at him.
TC - I don’t want you getting any new ideas with this new guard, Miss Williams. This is one good looking girl. I wanna ask her out myself.
Jack (looks worried and disgusted) - You can’t do that.
TC - Why not?
Jack looks at TC but doesn’t say anything.
TC - You have eyes for her too, Deveraux? Who do you think’s gonna stand a better chance with her? A lifer like you or a good-looking guy like me?
Jack doesn’t say anything. He looks like he wants to throw a punch at TC’s face.
TC - I’m her boss. She might want to score some points by letting me score.
Jack is still looking at TC with disgust and anger in his eyes.
TC - Yeah, she’s one hot number, Deveraux. Eat your heart out. (he points to Jack and has a very arrogant and proud look on his face.)
TC walks out and pages Travis on his cellphone.
Jack is now alone in his prison cell.
Jack (to himself with a very concerned look on his face) - The thought of Jennifer being hit on by that goon…. Who knows what else could happen to her on this assignment? I gotta talk her out of this. But how?
Next scene, TC is talking to Travis on cellphone to find out about Stefano, etc. TC says he’s going to watch Jack very closely as well as anyone who comes near him. Jack is seen standing by himself in his prison cell still thinking about finding a way to convince Jennifer to leave that prison job. Show ends.
