Episode Summary, August 26, 1997 Transcribed by Sandra

Jack is now back living in prison.  He walks into the prison rec. room and takes a seat at a bench.  He pulls out a picture from his pocket of a smiling Jennifer, holding Abby in her arms.  He sits down on the bench and looks at the picture...

Jack [while looking at picture, says sadly] -- Oh, Jenn.  I know you're determined to stick by me.  But I'm gonna have to spend the rest of my life in here. [he stares ahead]  Next time I see you I'm going to have to convince you of that.  Just get you to move on with your life.  But how am I going to live knowing that I'll never see you again?  How am I going to find the strength to keep going?

[Female Guard opens the door to the rec. room and calls out to Jack]

Guard --  Deveraux, your wife's here to see you.

[Jack glances at the picture of Jennifer and Abby and gets up from his bench.  He places the picture in his jeans pocket and walks towards the door to leave the rec. room.  Scene ends.]

[Next scene, Jennifer and Abby are seated in the prison visitor's area, happily awaiting Jack's arrival.]

Jennifer -- Daddy is going to be so excited to see you.

Abby -- Did you bring him the picture I drew?

Jennifer [smiling] -- Yes, I did!  It's right here.  But you didn't color in the bird.  You want to finish it?  I have crayons.  Here you go.

[Jennifer hands Abby the crayons and Abby sits in the seat next to Jennifer's and begins to color.  Jack walks into the visitor area to meet Jennifer.  Jennifer is really smiling as she watches Jack walk in to the room.  Jack, on the other hand, isn't smiling.  He has a very serious and cold look on his face.  Jennifer's expression turns more serious as she sees Jack's facial expression.]

Jennifer -- Jack, what is it?

Jack --  Jenn, there's something I need to tell you.

[Jennifer looks at Jack, clearly confused with what Jack's so concerned about.  Scene ends.]

Jennifer [hesitating] -- What is it that you want to tell me, Jack?

Jack [in a cold and serious tone of voice] -- Jennifer, I don't want you to come here anymore.

Jennifer [interrupts him] -- Jack, you can't say that...

Abby [interrupts Jennifer and walks towards the window and says with a big smile] -- Daddy!!!!

Jack [kind of surprised, and smiles] -- Abby!

Abby -- I drew a picture for you, Daddy.

[shows Jack the picture]

Jack [smiling] -- Oh, it's very good!

Abby -- It's not finished yet.

Jennifer [smiles at Abby] -- Why don't you go over there and finish it and let Mommy and Daddy talk, okay?

Abby -- Okay.  [she walks away]

[Jennifer leans her head forward so she is staring directly at Jack's face.  She has a very serious look on her face and a determined tone to her voice.]

Jennifer -- You cannot tell us not to come visit you, Jack.  She needs to see you.  And I need to see you.

Jack [determined] -- Jenn, you need to build a new life for yourself, without me.

Jennifer [shouts at whisper level so Abby won't hear] -- Uncle Mickey is going to find a way to get you out of here!

Jack [frustrated] -- The judge turned down my appeal!

Jennifer -- Yeah, only because Stefano and Kristen won't admit the truth that Peter is alive.  And he is alive.  And now sooner or later we're going to find the proof and you're going to be free!

Jack -- Jennifer, it's just not .....

Jennifer [interrupts Jack] -- Jack, we can't have this conversation again.  Now listen to me.  You're going to be free.  We're going to be together.  And that's all there is to it.

[Jack looks at Jennifer with sadness in his eyes.  His voice becomes more sad.]

Jack -- I love you so much.

Jennifer -- And I love only you.

[Jack looks at Jennifer still with sadness and loneliness in his eyes.  A tiny smile forms on his mouth.  Then his expression turns serious again.]

Jack -- I still worry about you being in that house alone.  I mean, Peter could come after you.

Jennifer [confidently] -- Look, Mom is there.  Mike is there.  And Trent installed the new security system.

Jack -- Right, right, Trent.  The new neighbour.  So what do you know about him?

Jennifer -- What do you mean?

Jack [concerned] -- I mean, how do you know that you can trust him?

[Jennifer looks at Jack with a "I never thought about that before" kind of look.  Scene ends.]

[Next scene, "Trent" (aka Travis) is at Jennifer's house fiddling with an electrical box outside her house.]

Travis [to himself] -- No problem disarming the system.  Of course, I did install it myself.  Now let's see how easy it is to get in.

[Travis opens the window to the dining room and crawls in to the house.]

Travis -- Stefano will be happy to know that was easy.

[Travis walks towards the living room.  Laura is walking downstairs and she is still wearing her housecoat.  Travis is stilll standing in the dining room when he sees Laura standing in the living room reading the newspaper.  His jaw drops in horror.  Laura looks up to see "Trent" in the dining room and let's out a scream of terror, clearly shocked to see him there.  Scene ends.]

[Meanwhile, back at the prison...]

Jennifer -- I think Trent is a really nice guy, Jack.  I mean, he's been very helpful.  He put in the alarm system.

Jack -- I just want you to be careful, Jenn.  You never know who might be working for Peter or Stefano.

Jennifer -- I will be careful, Jack.  I feel very safe living next door to him.  [smiling]  Now we don't have a lot of time.  So could we please talk about something else?

Abby [shows Jennifer the picture] -- All done!

[Jennifer holds it up for Jack to see and she smiles.]

Jack [smiles] -- Hey!  That is beautiful!  That's beautiful.  I'm going to put that on my wall so I can see it every single day.

Abby -- Okay.

[Jack looks at Jennifer and Abby with an enormous amount of love and pride.  He has a big smile on his face.  Scene ends.]

[Back at Jennifer's place....]

Laura [furious] -- How the hell did you get in here?!  You scared me half to death!!!

Travis [pointing to window in dining room, he walks towards her] -- I'm sorry I frightened you, Laura.  I was working outside and I ... I heard a noise and I thought somebody tripped the alarm.

Laura [confused and still out of breath] -- Well, I didn't hear anything...

Travis -- Well, I checked the box anyway and I found a loose wire.

Laura [worried] -- Do you think somebody's been tampering with the alarm?

Travis -- No, I mean, I didn't ..... I didn't see anyone.  Maybe the wire loosened on its own.

Laura -- How did you get in here?

Travis -- The uh... the back door was unlocked.  Well, Jenn... Jenn had mentioned that she and Abby were going to go visit Jack.  So I just came and checked things out.  I mean, I didn't know you were home.

Laura [much more relaxed] -- Well, thank you, Trent.  It's nice to know that someone's keeping an eye on the place.

Travis -- I mean, I know how nervous you and Jennifer are about her ex-husband.

Laura -- You have no idea.  Are you sure this security system is safe?  That it works?  I know that Peter's going to come for Jenn.  I'm sure of it.

[Travis looks at Laura with a very serious and sinister look on his face.  Scene ends.]

[Back at Jack's prison.  Abby is sitting in Jennifer's lap.  Jack, Jennifer and Abby are enjoying a light-hearted conversation.  The mood is much less tense.]

Jack -- So you've been taking Abby swimming at your grandmother's?

Jennifer -- Yeah, she's really good.  Aren't you sweetie?

Abby -- I love to swim.

Jack [to Abby] -- You be careful, okay?  [to Jennifer]  You too.

Jennifer -- Jack, please try not to worry about us.

Jack [sounding more concerned] -- Jenn, I can't help it.  I want you to be on your guard.  Always.  Now you know how devious Stefano can be.  And Peter's just like him.  He could show up when you least expect it.

[Back at Jenn's house...]

Travis -- Do you have any idea where Jennifer's ex-husband, Peter, might be hiding?

Laura -- No.  None.  For all I know he could be living right next door.

[Travis looks at Laura with a very surprised expression.  Laura is looking in another direction and doesn't see this.  Obviously the writers were trying to plant the idea, in the audience's minds, that Travis might be Peter.  Now we know differently.]

Laura -- The DiMera's are masters at disguise.  They can change their appearance at will.  I mean, Peter could be the Mailman or the Gardener, for all I know.

Travis [laughs] -- Come on!  Nobody is that good.

Laura -- Oh yes.  They are.  Add their power and their money, and you have a lethal combination.  That's why I have to be sure that the security system that you installed is safe.

Travis -- Laura, you know, have you ever thought of getting Jenn a full-time bodyguard?  I mean, I could recommend someone.

Laura -- Yes! I have.  But I doubt that Jenn would agree to it.  I mean there's no way that she's going to live her life in fear of the DiMera's.  And yet, they're obsessed with having ..... whatever they want, at any cost.  Well, I'm not going to let them have Jennifer.

[Travis looks at Laura with his typical sinister expression.]

Laura [very determined] -- God willing, I will get to Peter before he gets Jenn.  I will do whatever it takes to save my daughter.

[Travis again looks at Laura with that sinister and evil expression.  Scene ends.]

Travis -- Ah... you really hate Peter?

Laura [confused] -- I don't think that this has anything to do with hate.  I think it has to do with the depth of my love for my daughter.  Although, you know, there is a part of me that hopes that Peter does come here because he won't live long enough to tell anyone about it.

Travis -- Well, I promise you that I will never cross you.  [Laura laughs]  I better go.

Laura [smiling] -- Okay.  Trent, thank you very much for checking in on us.

[Travis smiles at Laura and says "sure."  He walks out the door and says to himself, when he's outside, "I may have to go to Plan B."  Scene ends.]

[Back at Jack's prison....]

Jennifer -- You know, Jack, in a way, I hope that Peter does come after me.

[guard opens prison bars to take Jack back to his cell]

Jack -- Jenn, don't even say that!  I won't be able to sleep if I think that you're not on guard 24 hours a day.

Jennifer -- Jack, you know, it would be the proof we need to get you out of here.

Jack -- No, no, no, no.  It's too risky!  Now promise me -- you will always be with someone.  You'll never be alone.  Now promise me.

Jennifer [quietly] -- Alright.  I promise.

[Guard taps Jack on the back]

Guard -- Time's up, Deveraux.

Jack [frustrated, says to Jennifer] -- It just goes too fast.

Jennifer [smiles to reassure Jack] -- I know.  Look, Abby and I are going to come back and visit you really soon.

Jack -- Jenn, it bothers me that she sees me like this.

Jennifer -- Jack, she's okay with it.  If I thought it upset her, I wouldn't bring her.  But she loves you so much.  And that's all that matters to her.  And plus, we won't have to come here much longer because I know that we're going to find proof that Peter is alive really soon.  And you're going to be back home, where you belong.

[Jack is staring down at the table looking very depressed.  He looks back up at Jennifer.]

Jack -- I hope so.   But in the mean time, you keep that alarm system on at all times.

Jennifer -- I will.  [Jennifer looks at Abby]  Sweetie, do you want to say goodbye to Daddy?

Abby -- I love you, Daddy.  Goodbye.

Jack [small smile but he still looks depressed.  He places his hand on the window where Abby's hand is]  -- I love you too, Abby.  [looking at Jennifer]  And Mommy.

[He gives a small smile to Jennifer, but he looks depressed and worried.  Jennifer smiles back at him, but she looks kind of sad too.  Scene ends.  End of episode.]
