Episode Summary, September 17, 1997 Transcribed by Sandra

Travis is outside Jenn's house spying at her through the window.  Jennifer sits down at a table to use the laptop when the phone rings.

Jennifer -- Hello?

Jack [sounds depressed] -- Jenn, Happy Birthday!  A day late...

Jennifer [smiling] -- Hi!

Jack -- Hey, I'm sorry I didn't call you yesterday.  But by the time I got to a free phone, this guard, TC, sent us all back to our cells.  I think he's got it in for me.  I don't know why, though...

Jennifer -- Jack, I hate thinking of you there.

Jack -- I'm okay.  How was your birthday?

Jennifer [smiling] -- It was nice.  We had a little party and Abby helped me blow out the candles.  We miss you a lot.

Jack -- I miss you both too.  So what's going on?

Jennifer -- Well, umm... I actually have some exciting news.

[TC approaches Jack and stands over him waiting for him to hang up]

TC -- Wrap it up!

Jack -- Jenn, the guard's here.  [looks at TC]  Listen, Jenn, I really don't have much time so...

[Jennifer hears Jack's phone hang up.  Jennifer looks frustrated]

Jennifer -- Jack?  Jack, are you there?  Damn!

[Mike walks into the room and notices Jennifer's sense of frustration]

Mike -- Hey, what's wrong, Jenn?

Jennifer -- I was just on the phone with Jack.  And the guard made him get off the phone.  What are you doing here?

Mike -- Well, I took a day off.

Jennifer [smiling] -- My workaholic brother took a day off?  Why?

Mike [looks kind of sad] -- Personal reasons.  [Mike walks away]

Jennifer -- What personal reasons?

Mike -- Well... They're a person.

Jennifer -- Is it Carrie?

Mike -- Yeah.  I thought I was going to be spending the day with her today.  I had it all planned out.  Right down to telling her I love her.

Jennifer [whispering sadly] -- Oh Mike...

[Jennifer leans over and gives her brother a warm hug.  Scene ends.  Next scene shows Carrie, smiling and in bed with Austin, on her honeymoon in Rome.]

[Next scene, Jennifer is still hugging Mike.]

Mike -- Thanks, sis.  [releases himself from the hug]  What the heck?  Carrie's happy.  That's all that really matters.  [raises his hand up in frustration]  I don't know.  [he walks away]  Where is everybody?

Jennifer -- Mom picked up Abby at school and took her to the Natural History Museum.

Mike -- Oh.  [points to Jenn's laptop computer]  So what are you working on?

Jennifer -- Jack wanted to write an expose on problems within the prison system.   I found his journal of notes and I decided to help him.

Mike -- Oh, that sounds interesting.

Jennifer -- It is, Mike.  Listen to this [Jennifer sits down on the chair to work on the laptop]  Jack had a cellmate named Travis.  He got transfered to another prison.  And Jack's tried to contact him.  But it's like this guy has disappeared into thin air.  Jack thinks if we could find out what happened to him, it could be a really important story.

[Travis is still spying on Jennifer outside and looks very concerned with what he's hearing through the window]

Jennifer -- I just wish that Bo would get back to me.  I know that Salem's best cop could find Travis.

[Travis still looks really concerned.  Scene ends.]

[Back at prison, TC kind of shoves Jack back to his prison cell and shuts the bars on him.  Jack stands near the bars to speak to TC]

Jack [frustrated and mad] -- TC, you couldn't give me a few more minutes?

TC -- You don't give the orders, Deveraux!  I do!  And it's time you learned that when you're a lifer, there's nothing for you on the outside.  Not even an ex-wife.

[TC walks away.  Jack looks so sad and withdrawn.  Jack stands there by himself, near the bars.  The shadows of the bars are covering his face.]

Jack [sounds so depressed] -- He's right.  I have nothing to offer Jennifer.  Nothing at all.

[Jack walks back to his bunk and sits down.  He stares ahead and continues to talk to himself]

Jack -- And Travis was right too....

[Jack has a flashback to his time in prison with his cellmate, Travis]

Flashback....

Jack [standing up and facing Travis.  He's shouting and sounds confident] -- Now listen!  Jennifer is independent.  She's capable.  And she's strong.  There are plenty of women who get along perfectly without a man!!

Travis -- Sure, sure.  But the problem is that Jennifer is doing everything she can to get you out of here. [raises his voice]  You're in here for life.  Are you willing to just let her throw her life away for you?!  Is that what you really want?!

Flashback ends...

Jack [says sadly] -- That's not what I want.

[Jack gets up from the bunk bed and walks to the middle of his prison cell.]

Jack [sadly] -- I've got to tell Jennifer to let go.

[Scene ends.]

[Back at Jennifer's house, Travis is still spying on Jennifer and Mike.  They both walk towards the couch and sit down]

Mike -- Hey, one day we will find proof that Peter is alive.  And then Jack will be free.

Jennifer [sadly] -- Yes, I have to believe that.  It's just so hard being without the person you love.

Mike -- Yeah, I know.

[Jennifer realizes she forgot about Mike's pain over not being with Carrie, for the moment.]

Jennifer -- I'm sorry.

Mike [reassuringly] -- No, I'm sorry.   Look, I'm fine.   I am fine.  Really.  And this expose, it sounds like a fantastic idea, sis.  Go for it!  I say go for it!

[Jennifer smiles at Mike, for his vote of confidence.  Travis is outside and uses his cellphone to phone Stefano.]

Travis [impatiently and sounds angry] -- Come on, come on.  This is Travis.  Let me talk to Stefano.  We got trouble!  Major trouble!

[Travis notices a delivery guy walking towards the door.  He runs away to hide behind the wall.  Delivery guy knocks on door and Jennifer answers it]

Jennifer [smiling when she notices the flowers] -- Oh, they're beautiful!

[Jennifer looks really excited to read the card and quickly gives the delivery guy a tip.  She takes the flowers and closes the door.  She walks towards Mike]

Jennifer [really happy] -- They must be from Jack for my birthday!

Mike [hesitant] -- Ah, Jenn...

Jennifer [confused as she reads the card] -- Carrie?

Mike [sadly] -- Yeah, I'm sorry.  I ordered these for Carrie because we were going to be .... together today.

[Jennifer has a look of disappointment on her face.  Mike looks just as sad as Jennifer, remembering how much pain he's feeling over not being with Carrie.  Scene ends.]

Mike -- Sorry, Jenn.  I should have said something.  I'll just throw these things away.

Jennifer [stops Mike] -- No Mike!  Don't!  They're beautiful.  I know they were meant for Carrie but there must be someone else you care about who you can give them to.

Mike [confused and hands flowers to Jennifer] -- Happy Belated Birthday?

Jennifer [rolls her eyes and smiles] -- No.  Not me.  Isn't there anyone at the hospital?  All those unmarried women there?  They must have major crushes on you.

Mike -- Right.

[sits down on the couch, disappointed]

Jennifer [smiling] -- Mike, you are a handsome, sensitive, loving, wonderful man.   You're a doctor!  [Mike smiles]  I know there is a perfect woman for you.  [looks at Jennifer, with interest in what she's saying]  But you are not going to find her moping around here.

Mike -- You're right.  There is someone I can give these to.  Thanks squirt!  [kisses Jennifer on the cheek and gets up from the couch]

Jennifer -- Who?

Mike -- The perfect woman.

[Mike leaves the house.  Jennifer watches him leave, confused with who he's referring to.  Later on, we discover Mike was referring to his grandmother, Alice.  He has a heart to heart with her discussing his feelings for Carrie.  After Mike leaves, Jennifer walks to her laptop and sits down so she can do some more investigative work.]

Jennifer -- I need more information.  I'm gonna go talk to Jack.

[Jennifer gets up from her seat and grabs her jacket.  As she's about to walk out the door, Travis shows up at the doorstep]

Jennifer -- Trent?  I didn't hear you knock.

Travis -- Just wanted to stop by to know if you wanted to get a bite to eat later.

Jennifer [in a rush] -- Oh.  I can't.  I'm gonna go see Jack.  I have something very important that I have to tell him.  [She closes her door]

Travis -- Nothing's wrong, is it?

Jennifer -- No.  No.  Remember that journal of Jack's I told you about?  The one that contains his notes on the article he's writing on problems within the prison system?  I've decided to help him with that.

Travis [fake smile]  -- Ah, Jennifer.  You know, I don't... I don't think that's such a good idea.

Jennifer -- Why not?

Travis -- Well, I mean... I don't really know a whole lot about the prison.  I mean, other than what I've read or what I've seen on television, you know?  But it seems to me that if Jack would write an article that would put the prison system in a bad light, I mean, I think the prison officials could make life rough for him.

Jennifer [looks concerned]  -- Yeah, I hadn't really thought about that.  You mean, like they could take his phone privileges or his visiting privileges away?

Travis -- Yeah, I mean, or... or worse.  I mean, Jack could get hurt.   Prison is a dangerous place.

Jennifer [looking quite concerned] -- Yeah, my friend Billie got stabbed in jail.

[Travis' beeper goes off.]

Travis -- You know what?  I gotta take this call.   I'll talk to you later.  I hope I didn't worry you.  I didn't mean to.

Jennifer [forces a smile] -- No.  I really appreciate your concern.

[Travis leaves.]

Jennifer [says to herself, somewhat hesitantly]  -- Well, if terrible things like that can happen in prison, then the system should be exposed.  And I know Jack would feel the same way.  We'll just have to be careful.

[Jennifer walks to her car.  Scene ends.]

[Jennifer has now arrived at the prison and is speaking to Jack through the window]

Jennifer [smiling] -- Jack, I have wonderful news.  You know that expose you wanted to write on the prison system and the disappearance of Travis?

Jack -- Right.  Right.  Well, who knows what happened to him, Jenn.  He could have got busted in some new scam.  Maybe he's in "The Hole" somewhere.

Jennifer -- Solitary Confinement?

Jack -- Right.  Well, maybe he's lost in the bureaucratic paperwork.  Umm... I don't know.  But if I could find him, I could really hook on to a big story.  But I'm limited here, Jenn.  What can I do?

Jennifer -- Well, you could team up with someone on the outside.  Someone who could get you the information you need to do the piece properly.

Jack -- It's a good idea.  Who?

Jennifer -- Someone who's familiar with your writing style.  Someone who you've trained.

Jack [kind of laughs] -- Who?

Jennifer [smiling] -- Someone who really knows the way you like to work.

Jack [smiles and jokes] -- Jenn, come on.  I'm starting to sound like an owl, here.  Tell me -- who?

Jennifer -- Me!

Jack [shocked] -- What?!

Jennifer [smiling]  -- Jack!  The best part is that we could work together.  We could really be working on something, just like the old days when we first fell in love.  It'll be great for us, Jack.  What do you say?

Jack [adamant and clearly mad at Jennifer for suggesting idea] -- No.  No way.

[Jennifer is surprised by Jack's hostile reaction.  She looks confused.  Scene ends.]

[Travis is outside Jennifer's house, talking on his cellphone.]

Travis -- Don't worry, Stefano.  They're not going to find out that I'm Travis.  She thinks that I'm Trent, her friendly, helpful next-door neighbour.  You know what?  Jack and Jennifer are two good investigative reporters.  If they dig deep enough, they could find out that you're behind this.  [listens to Stefano]  I'll make sure it'll never happen.  So how's your jungle excursion going with John Black?  Good. Good.  Well, I've got everything taken care of here.  I'll make sure Jack and Jennifer will never know our little secret.

[Travis hangs up his cellphone.  Meanwhile, back at prison....]

Jennifer [sounds mad] -- Why don't you want us to work together, Jack?

Jack [angrily] -- Jenn, we're not together.  I live here!  You know, excuse me!  I exist here!  And I'm trapped.  And I'm not going to tie you on to this in any way.

Jennifer -- Jack.  I ....

Jack [raising his voice] -- Do you have any idea of the danger that's involved here?   I need inside information.  Without Travis around, there's nobody around that I can trust.  I'm limited, Jenn.  I don't have access to a lot of stuff.  I need someone who can move about freely.  Like an inmate, trustee or maybe somebody that works on the staff.

Jennifer [yelling] -- I can find inside information for you, Jack!  I can help you!!!

Jack [shouts at Jennifer's face] -- No!!!  That's final!!!

[Jack quickly gets up from his chair]

Jack [shouts] -- Guard!  I'm ready!

[Jennifer stands up to face Jack and is pleading with him while raising her voice]

Jennifer -- Jack!  Please!  Wait!  I want to be a part of your life!

Jack [shouts] -- This is my life, Jenn!!!  I can't share it!!!

Jennifer [really yelling and almost cries] -- But I love you!!!!  That's why I'm doing this!!!

Jack -- And I love you!  And that's why I'm doing this.

[Jack turns around to leave without saying goodbye to Jennifer.  Just before he walks back to his cell, he turns around to look sadly at Jennifer.  Jennifer is clearly frustrated, sad and mad.  Scene ends.]

[Jennifer has now walked outside the prisoner's visiting area and looks incredibly disappointed.  She takes out her cellphone to call Mike.  Mike is sitting all by himself in his red sports car and looks just as sad as Jennifer.  His cellphone rings and he picks it up.]

Mike -- Hello?

Jennifer [trying to hold back her tears] -- Mike, it's Jenn.  I'm at the prison.

Mike -- Sis?  What's wrong?

Jennifer [takes a seat on a bench nearbye] -- Umm.. Well... Not only did Jack refuse my offer to help him with the prison expose.  But he told me that he doesn't want me in his life anymore.  What am I going to do?

Mike --  Hey you.  You're going to stay by him, Jenn!  You hear me?  I don't care what it takes.  You're going to hang in there.  He's just lost perspective.  Look, if you give up on him, then Jack will give up on himself.  You hear me?

Jennifer [seems very unsure] -- Yeah.

Mike -- No, I mean it!  I mean it!  You stay strong!  You fight for your love!  Okay?

Jennifer [holding back her tears] -- I'll try...  Well, I know that this lecture's coming from the heart, considering the pain that you're in.  How are you doing?

Mike -- Ah... I'm getting through the day.

Jennifer -- Well, why don't you just take a drive and try to take your mind off Carrie?  And I'll try to put your advice into action.  Thanks Mike.

[Jennifer hangs up the phone and sees an employment opportunity board.  She looks at it with a great deal of interest and kind of smiles..]

Jennifer [sounds very determined] -- Jack, didn't you just say that you needed someone on the inside?

[Scene ends.  End of episode.]
