Episode Summary, September 18, 1997 Transcribed by Sandra

Show begins with Jack sitting on his bunk bed, flipping through a stack of pictures in a box.  We see they're all pictures of him, Jennifer and Abby together, in happier times.  Jack picks out a picture, gets up from his bunk bed, and turns around so he can place that picture on his prison wall.  Then he suddenly pulls the picture off the wall....

Jack -- No.  I can't do this.  I told Jennifer to forget about me.  To get on with her life.  I should do the same.

[Jack sits back down on his bunk bed and puts the pictures back into the box.  One of the prisoners walks into Jack's cell.]

Prisoner -- Jack, have you run into that new guard, TC?

Jack [confused] -- Yeah.  Yeah, he cut me off when I was on the phone with Jennifer.   Why?

Prisoner -- Be careful!  He's a hard-nose.  He's out to prove that he's the toughest bull in the joint.

Jack [gets up to speak to prisoner] -- Yeah, well, thanks for the warning, Foley.  But I think if we just mind our own business and stay out of trouble, we shouldn't have a problem.

[TC walks by and stops to look into Jack's prison cell.  Jack and Foley notice TC.  TC walks away]

Foley -- I hope you're right, Jack.

[Jack looks towards the exit to his prison cell and seems unsure himself.  TC is outside Jack's prison cell and picks up his cellphone to make a call.  Travis' cellphone rings.  Travis picks up his cellphone]

TC -- Travis, it's TC.  I got assigned to Deveraux's cell block, like you said.

Travis -- Oh!  Good.  Good.  Well, Jennifer has no idea that I used to be Jack's old cellmate.  And I'm pretty sure that I convinced her to stop writing that prison expose with him.  So your job is to keep Jack in line.

[Next scene, Jennifer is sitting in the kitchen with Alice, at Alice's house.  Jennifer's mind is elsewhere and she flashes back to the argument she just had with Jack about him not wanting her to be a part of his life.  Alice notices Jennifer is not listening to her.]

Alice -- What happened?  You were a million miles away!

Jennifer -- I guess I'm thinking about Jack.  He thinks I should just walk away from him because he's in prison.  I can't do that.

Alice -- Of course you can't!  You love him.

Jennifer -- Grandma, what would you do if Grandpa were in prison?

Alice -- I would have done anything to help him!

Jennifer -- That's exactly how I feel.  And I have an idea.  Something that I think might help.

Alice -- Then go for it!

Jennifer -- Well, wait till you here what it is.  Because I don't think you're going to like it.

[Alice is confused about what Jennifer's talking about.  Scene ends.]

Alice -- Now.  Jennifer Rose.  You were going to tell me what you're going to do with your life.

Jennifer [kind of laughs] -- Yeah.  Well Grandma, I want to help Jack do an expose on corruption within the prison system.  I have his notes.  But he refuses to let me help.

Alice -- Did he say why?

Jennifer -- His argument is that he doesn't have the connections within the prison system to get the information that he needs.   And that I really wouldn't be much help from the outside.

Alice --  Well, I agree.  It would be very difficult.

Jennifer -- Well, when I was leaving the prison today, there was a sign.  And it said that they were accepting applications for guards.  So I've decided to apply for the job.

Alice [horrified] -- No!!  Jennifer Rose, you can't be serious!

Jennifer -- I knew you wouldn't like it, Grandma.

Alice -- Darling!  You have no experiences!  You have no references!

Jennifer [smiling] -- But Hope has experience.  Grandma!!  I can pretend I'm Hope!  I can use her credentials!

Alice [looking at Jennifer as though she's lost her mind] -- Oh dear!

Jennifer [smiling] -- I'll talk to her.

Alice -- You can't.  She's not in town.  She called Sean D. last night to say she was leaving town.

Jennifer -- Where did she go?

Alice -- She didn't say.

Jennifer -- Oh, you know, she did mention that she might go on vacation with Franco.  Did she say when she was coming back?

Alice -- No.

Jennifer [thinking of another plan] -- If I wear a dark wig, I think I could pretend I'm Hope.  Couldn't I?

Alice -- Well....  I suppose it's possible.  But...  You... Darling, it's dangerous!

Jennifer -- Grandma, not if I'm careful.  Look, I have to do something to help Jack keep his sanity, Grandma.  He is in prison in life for something he didn't even do.  And until we can prove that Peter is alive, there's no hope of him getting out.

Alice -- I know.  I know.  My heart breaks for him.

Jennifer -- Mine does too.  But I really think that if we work on this together, it will help him.  And I know that if Hope were here, she would give me her permission.

Alice -- She probably would.  But you know perfectly well that they are going to call Abe for references.

Jennifer [disappointed] -- You're right.  And Abe would never go along with this.

Alice -- You know, there might be a way to avoid the reference problem.

Jennifer -- How?

Alice [laughs] -- You get an appointment with the Warden.  And I'll take care of the rest.

Jennifer [surprised and smiles] -- You will?

Alice -- Yes!  You're too young to remember.  But I helped Bo and Roman on quite a few capers.

Jennifer [laughs] -- You did?

Alice [smiling] -- Yes!  So don't worry about a thing.  [Jennifer is really smiling]  Once you get the job, I'll take care of Abby for you while you work.

Jennifer [smiles and leans over to hug Alice] -- Grandma, you are wonderful!  Thank you!  And I'll call you as soon as I have an appointment set.

[Jennifer walks away]

Alice [seems a bit concerned that she won't have a plan] -- Good.  And I'll have a plan by then.

[Scene ends.  Next scene, Susan is in the kitchen eating Alice's donuts.  Jennifer calls Alice and says she has some good news and some bad news.  The good news is that she got an appointment with the assistant warden.  The bad news is that it's in an hour.  Alice is worried.  Jennifer's concerned that Alice won't have enough time to help her.  Alice reassures her that she'll take care of things from her end.  Alice hangs up the phone and asks Susan if she'll help her out.  Susan says she will.  Scene ends.]

[TC walks into Jack's prison cell.  Jack is sitting on his prison bunk and looks incredibly depressed.]

TC -- Time for your work detail, Deveraux.

[Jack gets up from his bunk and walks towards the exit to his cell.  TC stops him]

TC -- You're a lifer, aren't you?  In for murder?

Jack -- Mmm hhh...

TC -- Who'd you kill?

Jack -- I was convicted of murdering Peter Blake.  But I think he's still alive.

TC -- Stefano DiMera's son, huh?  Man!  You're travelling in some bad company!

[TC motions to Jack to exit the prison cell.  Jack begins to walk towards the exit when TC gives him a shove on the arm, forcing Jack right of his celll.  Scene ends.]

[Jennifer is now in the Warden's office dressed up as Hope.  She's wearing a brown wig and dark sunglasses]

Warden -- Well, Miss Williams, you certainly have fine credentials!

Jennifer [smiling] -- Thank you.

[Jack is now outside the warden's office pushing a janitor's cart with cleaning products on it.  Jack knocks on the Warden's door.]

Warden --  Yes!  Who is it?

[Jack opens the door to the Warden's office.  Jennifer turns around and notices that it's Jack.  She quickly turns around and hides her face with her hand, so that Jack won't recognize her.]

Jack -- So, may I clean your office now, Mr. Grant?

[Scene ends.]

[Alice is now outside Abe's office and explains to Susan about the plan.  She says she'll be in Abe's office and Susan is supposed to create a diversion when Alice gives her the cue.  Susan is very excited to help out with the plan.  And leaves to hide out when she sees a police officer arriving.  The police officer greets Alice.  Alice asks where Abe is.  The officer tells her Abe is out now but will be back later.  Alice asks if she can sit in Abe's office and the officer says it's no problem at all.]

[Back at the Warden's office...]

Jack [to Warden] -- Look, I can come back later if you're busy.  So...

Warden -- Yes.  Come back later.

[Jack nods his head to agree.  As he's closing the door behind him, he glances at the woman in the chair and gives her a funny look, probably because he has that famous psychic ability that all couples have in Salem to know where and what their loved ones are doing at all times  ;-)  He closes the door behind him.]

Warden -- Now let's see.. Why did you leave Salem PD?

Jennifer -- I was suspended.

Warden -- Suspended?  Why?

Jennifer [takes off her sunglasses] -- It's kind of complicated.

[Scene ends.]

[Alice is now sitting down in Abe's office while the officer works on the computer.  Alice coughs and the officer offers her water.  She agrees.  As he's opening the door, Susan runs into the office all frantic saying that there's Vampires outside and that the officer needs to go outside and look.  The officer laughs at her and reassures her there's no vampires.  Susan disagrees, as she hides behind Abe's desk, and says the officer better go look.]

Officer -- No, I'm sorry.  You're going to have to leave now.

Susan -- I'm not going anywhere without you!  Are you going to come with me?

Officer -- Alright, fine.

[Susan leaves Abe's office and shuts the door behind her, looking at Alice with a reassuring look.]

[Alice waits for the Warden to call her]

[Back at the Warden's office]

Jennifer -- Mr. Grant.  I was suspended for disobeying an order from my superior officer who also happened to be my ex-husband.  He wanted me off of the force because he was afraid for me.  And I could have gone back after my suspension was lifted.  But I learned a valuable lesson -- I don't believe a woman should ever work with a man she loves.

Warden -- Well, that won't be a problem around here, will it?

[Jennifer nods her head to agree and smiles, clearly knowing she's lying through her teeth]

Warden -- I admire your honesty, Miss Williams.  And I think you'd be good with the job.  But I do want to check with your Commander, Abe Carver.

[The Warden picks up his telephone to call Abe.  Jennifer looks nervous but tries to hide her nervousness from the Warden.  The phone rings in Abe's office and Alice answers it.]

Alice -- Commmander Carver's office.

Warden -- I'd like to speak to Commander Carver.  This is Assistant Warden Grant at the State Penitentiary.

Alice -- Oh!  I'm sorry.  Commander Carver's not in just now.   Is there something I can do for you?

Warden -- Are you the Commander's Executive Assistant?

Alice [crossing her fingers while she lies] -- I am here to help the Commander in any way I can.

Warden -- Fine.  I would like to ask you some questions about a former officer.  Hope Williams.

[Jennifer smiles nervously.  Scene ends.]

[The Warden continues to talk to Alice on the phone]

Warden -- Well, thank you for your help.  It's been a delight talking to you.

Alice -- Thank you, Mr. Grant.  It was a pleasure.  My pleasure.

Warden -- Well, law enforcement needs more women like you.  You tell Commander Carver to give you a raise.

Alice -- You're very kind.  Goodbye.

[Alice hangs up the phone and looks like she's worried about whether or not she did the right thing helping out Jennifer.  The officer walks into Abe's office and offers Alice the glass of water.]

Officer -- Well, I've seen some kooks before.  But she really takes the cake!

Alice -- She really seemed terrified!

Officer -- Yeah!  Of Vampires!  So how are you feeling, Mrs. Horton?

Alice --   Much better, thank you.
  [Back at the Warden's office]

Warden -- Commander Carver's Assistant gave you a glowing recommendation.  Congratulations, Officer Williams and welcome aboard.

[he shakes Jennifer's hand and she is really smiling]

Warden -- Come with me.  And I'll show you where to pick up your uniform.

[Jennifer is smiling and the officer begins to walk to the door.  Jack is outside the Warden's office, mopping the floors, completely oblivious to what's going on inside that office.  Of course, if Jennifer exits that office, Jack might see her.  Jennifer has no idea Jack's there either.  The show ends.]
