Episode Summary from November 14, 1996 | transcribed by Mystic |
It is the day of Bo and Hope's wedding. Since Jennifer is a bridesmaid,
she is already at the
church. Laura is at home in the living room dressed up in a beige
dress. She is standing in front
of the mirror putting her earrings on. Jack rushes in through
the front door.
Jack - (sees Laura) Oh! Good! I'm not the only one who's late.
Laura - Hi Jack.
Jack - Hi.
Laura - Nope. I was late from the hospital myself. (she
finishes putting her earrings on and
turns and faces Jack. He stares at her, amazed)
Jack - Laura, you look beautiful.
Laura - (smiles) Thank you.
Jack - Yeah, well I got held up from work too. I promised Billie
I'd be there at the wedding. She
needs me for moral support so...... (he stops and looks at Laura,
concerned) Well, how are you
doing?
Laura - Fine, really. Just rushing to get to the wedding, but...... (doesn't finish her sentence)
Jack - But what? Is there a problem? (he looks past Laura and sees suitcases on the floor)
Laura - (notices that Jack had seen the suitcases) Jennifer packed
all of your things before she
left.
Jack - (upset) Yeah, well I knew she was angry but I never dreamed
she would do something
like...
Laura - Jack, she wants you out of her life by tonight.
Jack - Laura, I can't leave her alone!
Laura - I will be here for her!
Jack - No!! Peter's ready to strike. I can feel it.
That's why I gotta be here to protect Jennifer. I
gotta find a way to stay. (moves closer to Laura) You gotta
help me. Laura, please. Tell me
you'll help.
Laura and Jack sit on the couch and continue to talk and argue.
Laura tells him that he won't be
able to have a future with Jennifer if he continues to alienate her.
Jack says that he just wants to
keep Jenn safe. He says he is almost positive that Peter is going
to do something soon.
Laura - You are so sure?
Jack - You're right I'm sure!! I'm positive of it! That's
why I went out and bought a -- (stops
himself, not wanting to reveal what he has bought)
Laura - (notices that he's hiding something) That's why you......
what? (Jack looks at her but
doesn't say anything. He looks guilty.) Tell me Jack!!
Jack - (finally gives in and says quietly) I bought a gun.
Laura - (stunned) A gun?!! (pauses) Does Jennifer know?
Jack - Yeah, she saw it! I was putting it away and she walked
downstairs. She ordered me to
get rid of it. (he stands up and has his back faced to Laura)
Laura - As well she should have! I hate the idea of a gun in this
house. I totally agree with
Jennifer!
Jack, with his back still facing her, is seen with the gun. He
sticks it in his pants.
Laura - (annoyed by his silence) Jack, don't you have anything to say?!
Jack - (with the gun now hidden, he turns around and faces Laura)
Laura, if you don't approve of
the way I'm handling things -- then fine. I can respect that.
I won't ask you to get involved. This
is my problem. I'll handle it my way.
------------------------------
Jack and Laura head on over to the church. They discover that
the wedding has been delayed.
Jack sees Jennifer and asks if he can speak to her privately.
She reluctantly agrees.
Jenn - Jack, if this is about the suitcases, I don't want to discuss
it. I want you out and that's
final.
Jack - Jenn, I understand exactly how you feel. But I have no place to go and I need some time.
Jenn - All you're doing is dragging your feet, Jack. Give me one
good reason you can't stay at a
hotel. One. One good reason.
Jack - I'll give you one good reason but you don't want to hear it!
Jenn - Well, no! Not if it's the same old thing of not wanting to leave me unprotected...
Jack - (smiles) See? I told you. You don't want to hear it.
Jenn - How many times do I have to tell you, Jack. I survived
when you walked out on me. I did
just fine and I'll do just fine again. Okay?
Jack - (upset) So what is so wrong with me wanting to protect you?
Jenn - I don't need you, Jack! Do you get it?! I don't need
you. And I can't believe you went so
far as to get a gun. I hope you got rid of it like I asked you
to.
Jack - Yeah, well, I want you to take a hard look at what could happen.
Jenn - (ignores him) I don't want you in my house, Jack.
Do you understand that? I mean, don't
you have any pride?!
Jack - This is not a matter of pride, Jenn!
Jenn - (frustrated) Okay, you know what? If you don't want
to move out, I will. I'll take Abigail
and we'll go to grandma's.
Jack - (quickly objects) No, no, no, no. You're not gonna turn Abby's life upside down.
Jenn - Well, it will turn upside down if you don't move out because I'm gonna pack tonight.
Jack - (with no other alternative, finally gives up. He says this
cooly). Okay! Okay. I'll go.
Don't worry. When you get home tonight, I'll be gone.
Jack, upset, walks away from Jennifer. She is left looking sad.
-----------------------------------
While Jack is at home finishing his packing, Jennifer is still at the
church. She talks to Maggie
and Maggie makes Jennifer realize that true love can win out in the
end. Maggie also says to
Jennifer that she believes that Jennifer is still in love with Jack.
Jennifer looks affected by that
and almost like she's willing to believe it. Later, Jack is now
outside putting his suitcases in the
trunk of his car. Jennifer and Abby pass him by.
Jack - (notices them) Hi. Did Bo and Hope show up?
Jenn - No. But Abby was tired so I brought her home.
Jack - (nods, then hesitates) Well, I'm moving.
Jenn - I can see that.
Jack - That's what you wanted, wasn't it?
Jenn - Yes. (pauses) So where are you staying?
Jack - One of the technicians at the studio has a spare room that I can use for now.
Abby - (looks up at her daddy) Are you leaving, daddy?
Jack - (kneels down) Yeah, I'm afraid so, sweetheart. But
I'm gonna stay real close and I'm
gonna visit you as often as I can, okay?
Abby - Okay, daddy.
Jack - And I'm gonna come back and see if you and your mommy are safe and all right.
Jenn - I'm sure we'll be fine, Jack.
Jack - (looks up at Jenn, then stands up) Yeah, well, I'm not.
(pauses) I better go.
Jack turns to leave but Jennifer stops him.
Jenn - Jack. Um, maybe we should talk before you do.
Jack - About what?
Jenn - Let me take Abby inside first, okay?
Jack - (nods) Fine.
Jennifer, holding Abby's hand, leads her up the path to their house.
Jack follows behind them.
Peter is seen hiding behind the bushes, waiting to make his move.
-------------------------------------
Jack is in the living room waiting for Jennifer. He looks a little
nervous, awaiting what Jenn has
to say to him. Jennifer walks down the stairs.
Jenn - Well, Abby was asleep before her head even hit the pillow.
Jack - She had a busy day.
Jenn - Yeah.
There is a silence between them. Jennifer doesn't really know
where to start.
Jack - Jenn, why did you want me to stay?
Jenn - I was talking to Maggie about Bo and Hope.
Jack - Mm hmm.
Jenn - Well, she reminded me of how many difficulties they had been
through but that they were
still together because their love was too strong to be denied.
Jack - (a little confused, but looking hopeful) So are you saying
the same is true for us? You
want me to stay?
Jennifer looks at Jack, almost lovingly. She looks as if she's
about to tell him that she does want
him to stay. It's almost like she's going to tell him that she
loves him. But they are interrupted by
a knock at the door. Jennifer goes to answer it, as she leaves
Jack looking extremely hopeful. It
is Kristen at the door who tells them the news that Hope has called
off the wedding. Jennifer is
very upset by this and Jack looks worried that she might be changing
her mind. Kristen leaves.
Jack - Jenn, listen. I know this got you pretty upset but --
Jenn - (interrupts him) My Aunt Maggie was wrong. Love can't
win when it's been betrayed.
And Bo betrayed Hope's love and trust.... just like you and Peter
betrayed mine.
Jack - (upset by that) Wait a minute, Jenn, I --
Jenn - Jack, don't. (pauses, then looks him right in the eye)
I want you to go. (she then looks
away and sits down by the fireplace)
Jack looks very, very upset by what Jennifer just said. He knows
that he came so close.
------------------------------
Jack - Jenn, don't let what happened between Bo and Hope affect your decision about us.
Jenn - I was wrong about us, Jack!
Jack - (shakes his head) No, you weren't.
Jenn - (quietly) Just go.... Please.
Jack, reluctant to move, stares at Jenn for awhile, just hoping that
she'll change her mind. But
Jenn's head is bowed down and she doesn't say anything. Finally,
Jack makes his way to the
front door. He opens it and turns back to Jennifer, who is not
looking at him.
Jack - I love you, Jenn.
He stares at Jenn a little longer, then walks out the front door.
Jennifer is left looking very sad.
Outside the house, Jack still looks hesitant to leave. But wanting
to respect Jennifer's decision,
he walks away from the house, gets in his car, and drives away.
Peter comes out of the bushes
and says that now's the time to make his move.
