This is a summary of 2 episodes (transcribed by Sandra) from February 17 & 19,1997. These are the epiosodes where Jack & Jennifer have their Valentine's Dinner, before Jack is taken to jail....
I guess a lot of you J & J fans have this episode on tape. But for those of you who don't, here's a summary of these two wonderful episodes for all of you to read and enjoy. This was the ONLY time Jack & Jennifer were given a private and romantic dinner from these writers. When Jack was recently released from jail, the writers gave them one 'romantic' dinner, except Jack was pushing away Jennifer for most of the episode because the other guests at the restaurant were calling him a "murderer". Ironically, Jack & Jenn's Valentine's dinner happened before Jennifer admitted her obvious love for Jack. But there was a lot of 'romance' in these episodes, as it was obvious that Jennifer was fighting her feelings for Jack.
The show begins with Jack & Jennifer standing across from each other in the living room of Jennifer's house. Jack is wearing a white shirt and tie, and Jennifer is wearing a royal blue-colored suit.
Jack (looks quite serious and seems a bit hesitant with what he is about to say) - "Jenn, tomorrow I'm going to jail for the rest of my life. (pauses) And...uh... I don't want to waste any time."
Jennifer (quietly) - "I understand, Jack."
Jack (pauses before responding to Jennifer) - "I know this sounds crazy, but (small smile) I uh....(begins to walk away from Jennifer, now his back is turned towards her) I really hoped that Laura would come up with something under hypnosis to prove that Stefano and Peter are still alive."
Jennifer - "So did I. But unfortunately, she didn't"
Jack (still has his back towards Jennifer) - "Yeah, I guess I was just grasping at straws. (now turns around to face and look directly at Jennifer with tears in his eyes)... at anything that would...... let me stay with Abby and ...... with you."
Jennifer (interrupts Jack) - "Jack, you said you had a favor to ask me."
Jack (sounds very serious yet hesitant. He is looking directly at Jennifer) - "Yes, yes, there's umm...... there's something I want to do ....... and I wanna do it with you."
Jennifer looks at Jack with a confused look on her face and doesn't answer him. I don't know if Jennifer was thinking Jack was about to ask her to make love to him. But the way he said that, it made it sound as though it could have sounded that way to her. I wish he would have asked her that too. But I guess she hadn't yet admitted she loved him, and Jack, being the selfless man that he is, would never put Jennifer into that kind of awkward position by asking such a thing of her. Poor Jack! Scene ends.
Next scene.
Jennifer - "Jack, I don't know what you have in mind that you need me for, but ....."
Jack (interrupts Jennifer because he probably figured Jennifer might have got the wrong idea about what he was implying, and gently grabs her arms) - "Jenn, I just.... want you to go out to dinner with me."
Jennifer (small smile, looks a bit relieved) - "Dinner? At this hour?"
Jack - "Yeah, well, it.... there's no way that I'm going to get any sleep tonight. Tomorrow, I'm going to jail.... for the rest of my life. I want to spend every free moment I have left with you."
Jennifer - "Jack..." (She sounds like she's hesitating and kind of wants to say "no")
Jack (smiling -- guess he figures if he can't win her over with what he's saying, he'll charm her with his smile - LOL!) - "I thought that since it's Valentine's Day, it's always been a special day for us."
Jennifer (very quietly, and forced smile) - "That was a long time ago...."
Jack (knows he's not going to 'win' this one and looks very sad) - "Yeah, right. Just... just forget I asked (Jennifer looks at Jack and looks like she's feeling a bit guilty) ... Yeah, why don't you go up to bed and I'll watch a little tv?"
Jennifer (looking sadly at Jack) - "Are you sure you're going to be okay?"
Jack (starting to get teary-eyed, smiles to reassure Jennifer) - "Yeah, I'll be fine. I'll see you in the morning."
Jennifer smiles back at Jack, but you can tell she is feeling very sad and sorry for him. She quietly responds with a fake smile, saying "Okay... I'll see you in the morning.." and leaves to go upstairs. Jack is facing the camera and has this very sad and lonely look on his face. (The poor guy!) Jennifer turns around while she is walking upstairs and looks at Jack for a moment and then continues walking upstairs. The scene ends.
Next scene. Jack walks into the living room, all alone, with a cup of tea (?) in his hand and takes a sip. He sits down on this chair near a table.
Jack (to himself) - "How could I have been so stupid?! The last thing that I wanted to do was to make Jennifer uncomfortable." (Jack has this look of disgust on his face and then leans over and covers his face with his hands. A couple seconds later, there is sounds of a person walking down the staircase. Jack hears this and peaks through his hands, which are still covering his face, to see who it is.)
Jennifer arrives in the room, wearing a beautiful black evening dress, with a matching cape that she is carrying on her arm. She is standing near the door.
Jennifer - "You still want to go out to dinner?"
Jack looks at Jennifer and is completely stunned. He gets up from his chair and cannot take his eyes off of her. He looks like he's breath-taken by Jennifer's beauty.
Jack - "(takes a deep breath) Jenn.... (big smile and laughs) You look beautiful!"
Jennifer (has a big smile and says quietly) - "Thank you. (She walks towards Jack) Well, are we going out?"
Jack (hesitates) - "Yeah... uh..... are you sure?"
Jennifer (smiling) - "I didn't put this dress on for nothing, Jack."
Jack (looks completely stunned and speechless) - "Okay, I'll.... I'll uhh... I'll just be a minute. Alright?"
Jennifer smiles and nods her head to communicate "okay".
This is so funny. He quickly runs up the stairs. Midway up the stairs, he decides that he has to stop and take another look at Jennifer in her evening gown. He stands there for a couple seconds and looks so breath-taken by Jennifer yet again. LOL! Then he suddenly remembers that he has to go to dinner and continues running up the stairs. Scene ends.
Next scene. Jack & Jennifer are at Chez-Vous. Jack is looking incredibly handsome in his tuxedo. There are candles lit at a nearby table. Very romantic setting. Jack & Jennifer are smiling and dancing. Jennifer puts her face close to Jack's at one point during this dance. Then Jack stops for a second and looks at Jennifer to say something to her.
Jack - "Thanks for coming, Jenn. It means a lot to me."
Jennifer (smiles, but sounds a bit hesitant) - "Yeah, well, I've always loved this place."
Jack quietly agrees and they begin to dance again. Jennifer puts her head close to Jack's and closes her eyes. Again, Jack stops dancing for a bit to say something else to Jennifer.
Jack - "Yeah, we had a lot of special times here, didn't we? (looks at Jennifer's eyes, waiting for her answer. His voice sounds so quiet, and yet so sexy) I guess after tonight, umm.. (he leans his face very close to Jennifer's as she puts her hands on Jack's shoulders) ... these memories are going to be the only thing that I have to hold on to" (He is looking directly at her eyes. He almost looks as though he is about to kiss her. Jennifer doesn't say anything. She is looking directly at Jack's eyes and seems completely captivated and entranced by him.) Scene ends.
Next scene, Carrie and Austin enter the dance floor and Jack & Jennifer are still dancing very close to each other -- practically, cheek to cheek. Austin and Carrie talk about Jack & Jennifer as they watch them dancing and Austin remarks that Jack & Jenn "look completely oblivious to the rest of the world." The camera then shows Jack & Jennifer still dancing, with Jennifer's hand on Jack's shoulder. They are gazing at each other's eyes. The scene ends.
Next scene. Jack & Jenn are still dancing close to each other, and cheek to cheek. The restaurant suddenly starts playing "Crazy For You" on the speakers. Jennifer stops dancing for a moment to look directly and Jack and ask him a question.
Jennifer - "Did you ask them to play this song, Jack?"
Jack - "This is our song, remember?"
Jennifer (holding back tears and sounding very upset) - "Used to be..."
Jack (leans forward and looks directly at Jennifer) - "This is always going to be our song, Jenn. Always" (he nods his head to agree with himself, still looking very seriously at Jennifer).
Jennifer is on the verge of crying and quickly excuses herself from Jack. She leaves him on the dance floor by himself. Carrie, who is still dancing with Austin, notices this and tells Austin she's going to go and talk to Jennifer. Austin walks over to Jack who is almost about to sit back down at his table.
Austin - "Hey, Jack!"
Jack shakes Austin's hands and says hello.
Austin - "Carrie and I heard the news. I'm sorry, man. It's a dumb question, but how are you doing?"
Jack (he is really smiling) - "Uh... believe it or not. I feel great..... at the moment at least. I never thought I'd be dancing with Jennifer again."
Austin - "You really love her?"
Jack (sounds very serious) - "More than ever, Austin. More than ever." (The camera is very close up to his face. At the end of his line, he looks towards Austin and the camera shows a very good view of his gorgeous blue eyes. His eyes are such a beautiful shade of blue -- as all of you know. Ooh, what a camera angle ;-)
Next scene. Jennifer is standing in the entryway of the restaurant with Carrie. Jennifer says she had to run off because she didn't want Jack to see her cry because he's having a hard time as it is. Carrie says she's so sorry to hear that.
Jennifer (crying) - "It's just not fair, Carrie. Jack has changed. He's finally become... the man that I always hoped he'd be. The kind of father I always wanted Abby to have."
Carrie nods her head in agreement. She smiles - "You still have feelings for him, don't you?"
Jennifer - "I admire his courage. He gave up his chance to be acquitted because he wanted to protect us from the bad publicity. And I will always be grateful to him for that sacrifice."
Carrie - "Is that all you feel -- gratitude?"
Jennifer (pauses to think for a second) - "I can't afford to feel anything else, Carrie. (she whispers) It's too late.." (she looks down towards the ground as tears begin to fill her eyes yet again) Scene ends.
Next scene. Carrie and Austin are sitting alone at a table and Carrie tells Austin that Jennifer is in love with Jack, but that Jennifer's too afraid to admit it. Austin seems surprised and says that Jack loves Jennifer. Then Carrie responds that it's terrible when two people who love each other so much can't express their mutual love to each other, etc.
Next scene. Jennifer walks back to her and Jack's table. Jack gets up from his chair and seats Jennifer. Jack asks if Jennifer's feeling okay, and if she wants to go home. Jennifer says no and smiles and says she's having a good time. Jack looks relieved and smiles back saying he's also having a good time.
Jack - "... Jenn, I know you didn't have to do this. But I'm glad that you did."
Jennifer (looking directly at Jack) - "Jack, you're Abby's father and you might be going away for a while. It's the least that I could do."
Jack (pauses for a few seconds and looks very serious) - "I'd do anything to stay here with you and Abby right now."
Jennifer (starting to get teary-eyed) - "Jack, even if you're not physically here, I know where your heart will be." (Her voice breaks as she is saying this because she sounds as though she is about to cry again)
Camera shows Jack's facevery close-up. Jack does not answer but he is looking directly at Jennifer and looks sad and serious. Let me just say that his eyes are breath-taking in this particular close-up ;-) This is the last scene for this storyline on this episode.
Next episode. The dinner continues... Jack and Jennifer are still sitting at the dinner table. "Their" song, Unbreak My Heart, is playing. Jack is really smiling, and begins to quietly laugh. Jennifer looks at him and smiles.
Jennifer (very quietly) - "It's good to see you smile, Jack."
Jack (and the look on his face becomes more serious. He takes a deep breath) - "Well, you've given me a lot to smile about. Especially tonight, Jenn."
Jennifer (still gazing at Jack, says very quietly, almost crying) - "I wanted to make tonight very special for you. And if there's anything.... that you want to do..." (she doesn't finish her sentence)
Jack (almost crying, he doesn't look at Jennifer) - "Yeah, there is one thing that I'd like to do. (very long pause. Jack looks up at Jennifer, then back down at the table. Finally he looks at her again.) - "Jenn, will you..... will you dance with me once last time?"
Jennifer (tears in her eyes, she says quietly, holding back her tears) - "I would love too."
Jack looks so sad. The poor guy! He has tears in his eyes. He gets up and walks over to Jennifer's chair. He takes her hand and she gets up from the chair. They walk, hand in hand to the dance floor. They arrive at the dance floor looking very sad, but obviously very much in love with each other. They begin to dance very slowly and Jennifer closes her eyes for a second, as she places her hand on his shoulder. After a few seconds, they stop dancing to gaze in each other's eyes. Right after, they begin to dance again, and Jennifer leans her head on Jack's shoulder. The chemistry is sizzling between them in this particular scene. Scene ends.
Next scene. Jack & Jenn are still dancing to "Unbreak My Heart". Jack stops and looks at Jennifer. Jennifer quietly asks Jack what he's thinking about. And he responds, with this small grin, that he is thinking about the first night they danced at Chez Vous. He smiles and quietly asks Jennifer if she remembers. She smiles back and a dream sequence (fake flashback) begins of their "first night" at Chez-Vous. "Unbreak My Heart is playing in the background of that flashback. That is quite odd considering this song is a current song and did not exist three years ago when Jack & Jennifer were still together - LOL! Those writers are so intelligent -- they always strive so hard to be realistic ;-)
Fake flashback: Jack & Jennifer are dancing very close to each other in this flashback. Their heads are touching each other and they are looking directly into each other's eyes. Jennifer puts her arms around the back of Jack's neck and puts her cheek next to his and they continue to dance. Jack has this intensely passionate look in his eyes. Jack has his arms around Jennifer's waist. They stop dancing and look at each other very passionately for a few seconds, which leads to a short kiss on the lips. They pull away and look at each other. Jennifer smiles at Jack. Jack looks at Jennifer and takes a deep breath. He really smiles now and lifts her up a bit and twirls her around. They look at each other and are continuing to really smile at each other.
Jack (says quietly) - "So, are you enjoying yourself?"
Jennifer (nods her head in agreement) - "There's something magical about this night."
Jack smiles - "There's something magical about us."
Jennifer smiles and puts her arms around the back of Jack's neck. She leans over and begins to kiss him gently on the lips. The flashback ends with them kissing.
Now, we're back to reality and the camera shows Jack's face and we realize he's been dreaming about that "first night". He smiles and looks at Jennifer as if to say "I just had the most incredible dream." Jennifer is gazing at Jack's eyes and smiles back. Jack very subtly licks his lips and looks down at Jennifer's lips for a second. You know, I'm not sure if that was even scripted or not! Maybe he was trying to make it look like Jack was wanting to kiss Jennifer but held back. I don't know -- maybe his mouth was dry and it was just a coincidence that he did that - LOL! Anyway, they continue to dance with Jennifer's head on Jack's shoulder. The scene ends.
Next scene, Jack & Jennifer are walking along the pier after leaving the restaurant. They stop and talk to each other, all the while gazing at each other with sadness and love.
Jack - "This used to be a ritual for us, remember? (takes a deep breath) We'd have dinner, go for a walk on the pier, then..... go home and build a fire."
Jennifer (quietly) - "Those were the days before we had, Abby."
Jack (pauses) - "Yeah, our lives changed after that..... for the better."
Jennifer (nods her head to agree, and says) - "Yes.."
Jack (long pause) - "So many memories, Jenn. (another long pause) I'm gonna treasure them. I... I have to..."
Jennifer - "I'm going to treasure them too, Jack."
Jack and Jennifer look at each with sadness in their eyes. It is so obvious that they are filled with sadness at the thought of being separated from each other. Suddenly, Jennifer gets caught off guard when she notices a shooting star. She points to the sky to show Jack the star. Jack tells her to make a wish. She has tears in her eyes and sadness in her voice. She says "I already have. And I just pray that it comes true." Jack and Jennifer gaze at each other's tear-filled eyes and look very sad. The scene ends.
Next scene, Jack & Jennifer arrive back home from the restaurant. Jack is carrying this big box into the home. It's a dollhouse that Jack bought for Abby. Jack also shows Jennifer a cross that he bought for Abby. Jennifer looks so moved by it and says it's beautiful. Jack asks Jennifer if she'll give Abby the cross for him. Jennifer says that this will mean a lot to Abby. And Jack says he wants Abby to have something that will guide her and protect her. Jack seems very overwhelmed with sadness so he tries to change the subject by saying that he's going to work on building Abby's dollhouse. He tells Jennifer that he'll understand if she goes up to bed since she's probably tired and "beat". Jennifer asks Jack if he'd mind if she stayed up with him. Jack says no, but that she doesn't have to, if she doesn't want to. Jennifer looking very sad and almost crying, says that she wants to. Jennifer says she'll be down in a minute because she's just going upstairs to check on Abby. Jack watches her walk upstairs and he has lots of tears in his eyes. He looks quite sad. Scene ends.
Next scene, Jennifer is back in the living room with Jack. She has changed out of her evening gown and is now wearing casual clothes. When Jennifer first arrives in the living room, she notices Jack writing down info. on a piece of paper. She asks Jack what he's doing. And he says he's transferring his money into a joint account with Jennifer. Jack is trying to sound calm about this, but his voice is breaking because he is in obvious pain. He says he's saved up a lot of money and that Jennifer can use the money to buy whatever she wants for Abby for Abby's birthday presents, Christmas presents, etc. Jack says it's best if Jennifer chooses Abby's presents because Jack won't know how Abby will look or what her likes or dislikes will be once he's in jail. Jennifer is listening to Jack with tears in her eyes. She is clearly very upset hearing Jack say these things. She smiles and says, choking back tears, that "I'll make sure the presents that I give her from you are very special." Jack thanks her. Jennifer takes a deep breath and turns her head away from Jack. Jack notices Jennifer looks overwhelmed with sadness (although she is trying to put on a 'brave front' for Jack). He asks her if she's okay. She apologizes saying "it's all just sinking in.." Jack says he knows. Jack says he knows he shouldn't be talking about this now, but that he doesn't have much time. Jennifer says he has until the morning, until the police come and take him to jail. Jack is too overwhelmed with seeing Jennifer in no much pain. He's almost about to cry, but stops himself by changing the subject and saying he's going to go and work on the dollhouse. Jack starts working on the dollhouse and Jennifer watches him with sadness in her eyes. Scene ends.
Next scene. Jack and Jennifer have finished putting together the dollhouse. Jack and Jennifer still look sad but are smiling, trying their best to make the most out of the last moments they have together. Jack & Jennifer reminisce about the time that they put together Abby's tricycle. Jennifer and Jack say how they remember how Abby's eyes "glowed" when she saw the bike.
Jack looks very sad - "We had it all back then."
Jennifer doesn't look at Jack and says "We were very happy."
Jack (not looking at Jennifer. He sounds incredibly sad) - "I was such a fool to throw it all away..."
Jennifer (very quietly, with tears in her eyes) - "Jack, we don't need to talk about this..."
Jack (tears are now in his eyes) - "No, Jenn.... we do. (he turns to look at Jennifer) You need to know what a wonderful woman you are. And that.... any man... would be so lucky to have you." Jennifer looks at Jack with sadness in her eyes. He continues, "I'm just sorry I can't be that one."
Jack is so overwhelmed with pain and sadness that he quickly leaves the room and goes upstairs. Jennifer sadly watches him leave. She looks like she wanted to say something to him (obviously that she loves him) but she keeps quiet.) Scene ends.
Next scene. Jack comes back downstairs. Jennifer is sitting on the couch. Jack walks towards her and sits down.
Jack - "Abby looks so beautiful when she's sleeping."
Jennifer (smiles) - "Yes. (pauses) About what you were saying before..."
Jack - "Right, Jenn. Look I'm sorry. I know it makes you feel a little uncomfortable when I start talking about my feelings...."
Jennifer - "It's okay. It's alright. Well, sometimes I wish we could turn back the clock too and erase all of our mistakes. (her voice becomes more sad) I wish that...."
Before Jennifer can finish her sentence, there's a knock at the door. Jack and Jennifer look to see who's at the door. Jennifer seems very confused and worried. Jack walks to the door to answer it. There are red flashing lights visible outside the door. The police officer enters the house and says "Jack Deveraux?" Jack says "Yeah." The police says "I've come to take you in." Jennifer quickly gets up off the couch and looks schocked. Jack turns to look at Jennifer and has a look of complete sadness in his eyes. That's their last scene in this episode.
I believe that Jennifer gets Mickey to come over and convince the police to give Jack a bit more time because he officially has until the morning to be a "free man". The police reluctantly agrees to leave and gives Jack a bit more time, after hearing many angry and desperate pleas from Jennifer. Anyway, that's all.
