Telling Tom
Belanna sat in her quarters looking at the picture of a baby girl.
She
grew agitated just looking at her. Because looking at her forced
her to
remember and Belanna never wanted to remember. Just then the
chime
rang. Belanna looked up and called out for the person to enter. Tom
Paris strode into the room the expression on his face was one
of worry
and one of anger. "Tell me what's going on Belanna. And
don't say
nothing is going on I know something is and I want to know what it
is.
And I am not leaving and I am not letting you leave until you tell
me."
With that said he sat down to wait. He also got ready to duck
figuring
that he had just had made the love of his life quite upset. He
couldn't
of been more wrong Belanna just sat down and looked at Tom. "How
well
do you think you know me Tom?" asked Belanna. "Pretty well.
I know
what kind of person you are and that is all that matters." Belanna
sadly shook her head and said "That isn't enough." She got up and sat
on
the chair across from Tom. "This was before Voyager and even before
the
Maquis I had a very different life. I lied when I said I didn't
have a
grudge against the Cardassions. Remember when I told you why
you I
joined the Maquis." At that Tom nodded, he remembered. Belanna continued
her story, "I had a big reason to hate the cardassions. When
I was
fifteen I was living on a small border colony. I had run away
from home
again and I thought for once I was safe. Boy was I ever wrong. I was
walking home from a small store were I worked when alarms started
sounding, the cardassions were heading straight for the colony.
I
helped them fight for hours but it was no use the cardassions were
winning the battle and I knew if I was going to escape I was going
to
have to do it then while I still had the chance. So, I took off
and I
ran as hard as I could. Little did I now that I was heading straight
into a group of soldiers who were taking the long way to the colony
to
catch any people who were trying to flee from the colony. The
Commander
was a half-Cardassion half-Bajorian. I literally ran right into
them.
I fought them to for as long as I could. I took out ten of the
men.
But I knew I was fighting a losing battle. I let them take me
and
before I knew I had been raped by the leader of the group. He
hit me
over and over again and left me to die. Only I made it to the
colony
only to find everyone dead. I barely remember making a call for
help. I
woke two days later on a starship the only survivor of the massacre.
And
I also woke up pregnant. When the doctor told me I was so scared.
I
didn't know what to do. The doctor explained my options and gave
me and
alternative I didn't know I had. The doctor told me about a place
called the Haven. It is a home for teenagers who had been raped.
They
also dealt with teenagers who had been raped and had gotten pregnant
and
wanted to give their baby or babies up for adoption. I went there
knowing when I left I would be leaving totally alone. I knew
this and I
accepted this. While I was there I learned to deal with what
had
happened to me. But I never stopped hating the Cardassions.
Nine
months later I gave birth to twins, Megan and Micky Torres. My
one
consolation was that they would always have each other. The family
I
picked to adopt them wanted them both. I still remember giving
my
babies to their new parents. It hurt like crazy and it still
hurts, but
I know I did the right thing. And the reason I had been hiding
is that
yesterday was their birthday. And Tom that is my life story."
By this
time tears were streaming down Belanna's face.
Tom had many reactions to Belanna's story but first and foremost was
an
all consuming love for the women who had been become the light of his
life. Tom got up and walked over to Belanna and sat down and
held her
while she cried. He saw a picture and quietly asked "Is this
them?"
At Belanna's nod, Tom looked down at the picture and saw two small
babies held by a younger Belanna.
Tom quietly said, "Belanna I love you and I always will. Nothing
you
have said will change that if anything I love you even more and I will
never stop."
Belanna looked at Tom and slowly kissed him. And for the first
time in
weeks she felt hope inside of her.
