8/19/00: Working Round the Clock.

It's about midnight, so technically it falls under the new day. But for all intents and purposes, it's the 19th. Bah.

Well, I have basically stayed the night at my employer's house. Sounds weird, until you put it in the perspective of the fact that he's 15 and I'm 18. That does make it a bit more interesting. It is the more fun side of the job. You can't get that at Circuit City.

I continue to consider this job a great thing for me. It's taught me so much in terms of server maintenance, as well as the operations and functions on all the major server software. It's great considering this is the type of field I plan on going into at some point.

It was a pretty big risk for me to attempt something like this. It was an ambition though, and I got a chance to pursue part of my plans for the future at such an early age. It's a great jump start for the future. And it's a lot of fun on top.

Meanwhile, I find that the worst part of the job is the lack of sleep. I have to get up at 5:30 for a 2 hour commute (each way), which is the biggest negative. Lack of sleep has been becoming a slowly growing issue due to the late nights I've had lately testing scripts and servers, plus the early mornings getting here. Fortunately, vacations and other such breaks have broken up that pretty well.

Circuit City has also helped to break it up, where I'm working 2 days a week currently (Tuesday and Thursday, to break up the CFM week of Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat). It has plenty of upsides too, such as keeping me informed to music releases and just the people who work there, many of which I've developed friendships with over the past 2 years. The biggest downside is my failed relationship with another employee there tends to be the topic of interest. And that, of course, just makes it harder to leave it behind. Still, despite that the store is a good place to work... everyone grows close quite rapidly through the work as well as the personal dilemmas we go through.
