The Chemistry of DL56

This is a short one. Why is it, that during the first stages of the discovery and development of the "wonder drug" DL56, the hydrocarbon formulas on the lab chalkboard were not changed? Throughout the whole storyline, the formulas remained constant. Now, if these 'doctors' were really developing this drug which required the creation and manipulation of complex chemical formulas, would they not have used their board to help them visualize what they were doing? Aside from that, from what I could see of the board, the formulas were not very complex, for this wonderful, undiscovered drug.
