Hello everybody! My name is Karen, and aside from being a t.v. addict, I am also a Second Cup addict. For those of you who are unpriveledged and do not have this magnificent coffee shop in your country, you're really missing some great coffee! Some cool stuff to check into that I like are the following:
Literature
Fall on your knees by Ann-Marie McDonald. This is an awesome book - hilarious, poignant, thought-provoking, etc. etc. etc. It's one of the best books every written in my opinion.
Sacred Choices, a book about the perception of abortion in various world relgions. An interesting read. Interested in abortion issues? Also check out The Abortion Myth.
The Stone Diaries, by Carol Shields. This is an excellent novel but if you're not patient you won't get through it because it's very descriptive.
The Runner, by Cynthia Voigt. This one is for younger audiences, but it's a very interesting read. Also check out Homecoming by the same author.
Q-In-Law, by Peter David. This is a Star Trek: The Next Generation novel, so if you are a fan of the t.v. show, you'll really enjoy this book, especiallly if you're a fan of the omnipotent "Q". Also check out the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine book The Big Game if you're a fan of Quark.
The Small Words in My Body, by Karen Connelly. This is a collection of poetry written by a young Canadian author. It's an excellent collection; her poetry is very good. If you like this one, you'll also like This Brighter Prison, also poetry, and One Room in a Castle, a book of prose, both by the same author.
Anything by American poet Emily Dickenson. Her writing is excellent.
My favorite Shakespeare plays: "Hamlet" and "Macbeth". I also love "King Lear" and "Julias Caesar".
Music
Anything composed by J.S. Bach, played by Cellist Yo Yo Ma. His playing is inspiring, especially when he does Bach.
"Swamp Ophelia" by the Indigo Girls. Actually all of their albums are terrific. IG released a new album in February 2004 entitled "All that we let in". Check out the Indigo Girls official website for lots more info about them.
"Graceland" by Paul Simon. The best album ever made, bar none. Seriously. EVERYONE should own a copy of this.
"Mortal City" by Dar Williams. She's fantastic.
Anything Joan Baez. I saw her in concert last year and she was better than ever.
"Surfacing", by Sarah McLachlan. This album features such songs as "Building a Mystery" and "Adia", but there are some other unreleased songs on the CD that have very nice, gentle music and lyrics.
"August and Everything After" and "Recovering the Satellites", both by Counting Crows. Excellent music.
You might like to try Neil Diamond. He may seem old and weird, but his music is actually really catchy after you listen to it for awhile. Check it out!
Anything by Mandy Patinkin. He has an interesting voice and he's really fun, particularly in concert!
"Clumsy", by Our Lady Peace. It features the really great songs "Superman's Dead" and "4AM", among others.
Movies
"On the Town": perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made...funny, entertaining, musical, cute Frank Sinatra...
"A Few Good Men", featuring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Jack Nicholson, and a whole bunch of other well-known stars. It's a fantastic movie! As a fan of Tom Cruise, I also recommend "Days of Thunder", "Jerry Maguire", "Magnolia", "Collateral" and all of his other movies.
"Orange County", featuring Colin Hanks and Jack Black with lots of great cameos. It's hilarious, and particularly cathartic if you just got rejected from a college or something like that.
"Murder by Numbers", with Sandra Bullock. In particular, I love the Krispy Kreme cameo appearance early on in the movie, but that's just my thing. If you like Sandra Bullock, I also recommend "Miss Congeniality" and "Two Weeks Notice".
"Boys on the Side", starring Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore. It's a nice, low-key movie, with a very nice ending.
"Star Trek: Insurrection". This is the first Star Trek movie I've ever seen and I loved it! It was funny and it had all the great characters and it wasn't too violent. "Star Trek: Nemesis" is also wonderful, but be prepared for the sad ending, especially if you've been a long time fan of Star Trek TNG.
"Braveheart", starring Mel Gibson. It has an excellent soundtrack, a dramatic ending, and who can resist Mel Gibson in a kilt?
"Scream 2". This movie actually is even better than the first. It can be stupid at times, but it's funny and very enjoyable.
"Amadeus", a dramatic movie about the life of Mozart. Very good.
Disney movies I like: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, because it is funny in a subtle way and Quasimodo is really cute, and "Beauty and the Beast". I can always watch those two over and over, while I get sick of the others.
This is my sister's web page. Okay, just to clarify that first of all, I don't mean my page about the television show Sisters, I mean the web page maintained by my biological sister. So, this is a very lovely page with stuff about comic books, rabbits, and movies.
This is actually a page maintained by my sister too. It has a lot of reviews for movies, including quite a few reviews for foreign films (if you're into that), plus pictures of some of the movies. It also features a few movie reviews by none other than me. So check it out!!!
