This episode marks the beginning of the show and the introduction of Dana Scully to Fox Mulder. The two agents research the significance of two distinct marks on the lower backs of several dead students, all from the same graduating class. When another student who has come to Mulder and Scully for help is about to also be killed, the agents discover that the seemingly-comatose boy, Billy Miles, is behind the deaths. Mulder believes that the deaths involve aliens in some way, while Scully exhibits, for the first time of many, her skepticism. Scully "sees a light" near the end of the episode, and tells AD Skinner that she believes that there is paranormal involvement in the case, although she cannot prove it.
