4. Did Edith die in the last episode of "All in the Family"? Why don't I ever see it? How did she die? I get these questions in my Inbox more than any others. Edith didn't die in the last episode of AITF. It is true that Edith get's ill in the last episode, but she recovers. Edith made occasionally appearances throughout the first season of Archie Bunker's Place. Jean Stapleton had wanted to be done with the series, feeling that the character of Edith had run her course. She thought it better to end on a high note, rather than become stale. It would be difficult to keep explaining her absence from the show. And because of the level of emotional involvement the audience had with the character, they would most likely not accept her just "not being there." It was suggested that Edith die. Death had touched the Bunker family several times during the course of this series - one of the many things that challenged the term "sitcom". This would be the most heartbreaking. The second season of Archie Bunker's Place begins in the fall of 1980, with Edith already having died from a stroke in her sleep. In a one-hour special, "Archie Alone", Archie and a faithful viewing audience mourn the loss of Edith. | ||||||||||||||||||
