The Lyrics
There were two theme songs written for "All in the Family." - "Those Were the Days" for the opening and "Remembering You" for the closing. "Those Were the Days" had more lyrics than were heard. The full lyric, in order, is below. Also, the closing theme is listed in the credits as written by Roger Kellaway and Carroll O'Connor. Actually, Carrol O'Connor didn't write the music. He wrote the lyrics, which were not performed. It was just done as a stride-style piano solo. O'Connor's lyrics are also given below.
"Those Were The Days"
by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse
Boy, the way Glenn Miller played. Songs that made the Hit Parade.
Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days.
Didn't need no welfare state. Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great. Those were the days.
And you know who you were then. Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days.
Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong. Those Were The Days.
Remembering You
by Roger Kellaway and Carroll O'Connor
Got a feelin' it's all over now - All over now, we're through.
And tomorrow I'll be lonesome, Remembering You.
Got a feelin' the sun will be gone - The day will be long and blue.
And tommorrow I'll be cryin', Remembering You.
There'a a far away look in your eye when you try to pretend to me,
That everything is the same as it used to be.
I see it's all over now - All over now, we're through.
And tomorrow I'll be startin' Remembering You.
