Hi Everyone,
For the early shopper Walmarts started putting out their Christmas this week. So far it's mostly still boxed up but I was told that it will be on the shelves in the next two weeks. Which probably means that it is on the shelves already at other Walmarts. Hopefully this year will see more of the Matrix animated figures that didn't get around last year. I would like to get that Marvin toymaker..and the snowglobes...and.....ahhh just give me one of everything!

Collecting Promotional Glasses

A promotional glass is one that you get for buying something. These were very popular in the 70's and 80's but haven't done so well in the 90's. There are several large series of these that should interest us and many smaller ones. The 1973 and 1976 Pepsi series are probably the most popular. Both of these have nice graphics and can be found in most antique shops or swapmeets. Below we have listed a few things to look for when you are buying and also some help on the 1973 series.

Things to look for on a glass:
1. Chips on the rim and base
2. Wear marks on widest part of the glass(where they would rub together)
3. Paint poorly applied(outside of lines or bare spots)
4. Faded paint(Some series came looking faded)
5. Distortions in the glass

Any of these in a glass should be considered a defect and subtract from the value.

Help on the 73 Pepsi Series:
This series causes the most headaches for collectors. Pepsi used two suppliers to make them and released them in four different versions. The two suppliers were Brockway Glass Co. and Federal Glass Co. The Brockway glasses were made sturdier and have come to be known as the "Thick Glass" series. The Federal glasses were made thinner and broke easier. They are a little harder to find because of this and are known as the "Thin Glass" series. Both issued the same glass in two versions where the only difference was the color of the letters(either black or white) or whether or not a Pepsi logo was on the glass. Below is a brief breakdown of the types of glasses each issued.

Brockway:
16 oz.: 18 different characters with both black and white lettering(36 total)
16 oz.: 6 different characters with Pepsi logo under them and black lettering only
12 oz.: 6 different characters with the logo under them
12 oz.: 5 different characters with the logo on the side
Federal:
16 oz.: 18 different characters with both black and white lettering(36 total)
15 oz.: 18 different characters with Pepsi logo under them and black lettering only
12 oz.: 6 different characters with the logo under them

As you can see from this list there are over 100 glasses in this series and that isn't counting variations! This makes it almost impossible to get a complete set-but very fun to try.
