CAST
BREAKDOWN
This cast is made up of raw and original,
rock/pop/gospel singers who do not necessarily require
formal acting skills. They must truly have a quality of
street life and can also move well. Not your typical
Musical Theatre talents. Authentic edge and sincerity
necessary. The show features thirteen performers in an
ensemble cast. There will also be additional
swings/extras required. Following is a breakdown of
characters. Ethnicity is encouraged. All are mid to late
20's in age.
ROGER
Caucasian male. Rock n' roll grunge voice between Bon
Jovi and Kurt Cobain. He is very sexy, a frontman able
to project raw pain with charisma. Lover to Mimi. His
character is HIV and struggling to write a hit before he
dies. Sings high notes to A Flat.
MARK
Caucasian, male. An underfunded and underground
filmaker who has turned his back on an affluent
upbringing. Quirky but cool like Dobie Gillis meets
Maynard. Likeable and highly strung, he is the narrator
of the show. A baritone/second tenor voice. Strong
actor.
JOANNE
Female, mixed ethnicity. A high rock belter voice like
Aretha Franklin meets Puff Johnson. A politically
connected Harvard graduate lesbian with a wry sense of
humour and sardonic wit.
COLLINS
Male, African American or mixed ethnicity. A gay man
with tons of soul, Lenny Kravitz meets Marvin Gaye
vocally. Philosopher, teacher, anarchist and AIDS
activist. A great open personality, an extremely sincere
and loving individual. Low baritone, bluesy and gravely
voice.
BENNY
Mixed ethnicity, male. A striver up from the NYC
ëprojects' to the Ivy League who wants to be the next
Quincy Jones. A slick soulless yuppy hustler who is
beautiful and sexy. A baritone, second tenor voice with
some soul for pop ballads.
ANGEL
Asian, Latin or white male in his late teens / mid 20's.
He must play percussion, dance well and dress in drag
without being an obvious drag-type. A loveable and
sincere, almost timid guy who can play hard when he
wants to. Lover of Collins and truly young at heart. A
high tenor to falsetto range.
MIMI
Latin, Asian or mixed ethnicity female. A really raw
rock n' roll voice with a high belt. She is an optimist,
not a quitter, with some very dark secrets. Lover to
Roger. A dangerous but appealing druggie. A unique
and sexy voice like Neneh Cherry.
MAUREEN
Caucasian female. A young spunky soul singer like
Alanis Morrisette. She has an innocent sexuality that
everyone, male and female, want to love. She is a
performance artist from the East Village who is lots of
fun.
ENSEMBLE MEMBERS
The ensemble work around these eight leads as
community members and street rats. They are male and
female of varying types. Vocally dynamic and an ability
to move well on stage.
