Anthony Stewart Head is best known within the United States for his role in the series of Taster's Choice instant coffee commercials which tracked the romance of two neighbors who shared a love for the same coffee. The success of the commercials in the United States, however, was detrimental to Head's advancement in the British entertainment industry due to the British aversion to the lack of seriousness in commercials. This backlash prompted him to leave England and come to the United States.
Head's theatre career began early when he played the lead in The Emperor's New Clothes on a stage at his neighbor's house at the age of six. He describes the frustration and suffering of his friends while playing soldiers. "I'd always turn it into a scene and reherse it," he recalls. Head began to focus on persuing an acting career even more in high school where he immersed himself in performing in, writting, and directing plays. He auditioned for the prestigious National Youth Theatre in London where he was turned down. Later, he attempted to enroll in Central School, a drama school, where he was encouraged to get more experience before planning on studying there. Undeterred, Head worked in an editing room for about a year, then returned to do youth theatre at Thorndyke Theatre in Leatherhead before heading to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Head's television credits include the sci-fi series "V.R. 5" and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He has also guest starred on the series "Highlander" and the police drama "NYPD Blue."
Additionally, Head has performed in BBC Productions "Secret Army," "Accident," "Bergerac," "The Grudge Fight," "Howard's Way," and "Pulaski" as well as British television productions "Enemy at the Door" and "Love in a Cold Climate."
His breakthrough role came when he was cast as Jesus in "Godspell." His most notable theatre role is that of Dr. Frank N. Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," a role he describes as being a more demonic, meaner, and madder version of the character played by Tim Curry. Other theatre credits include "Julius Caesar," "The Heiress," "Chess," "Yonadab" and "Rope."
Head compares himself with his character on Buffy, Giles, with his openness to unconventional ideas. He hangs crystals and wind chimes in his apartment to keep the energy flowing, and he claims that there is a spirit living in his home in England. Additionally, he practices a Native American tradition called "smudging," the burning of sage to keep the right kind of energy flowing and figuratively clear the air. The process is shown on camera in the Buffy episode "Becoming" during the ceremony to restore Angel's soul.
Head was born in Camdentown, England and grew up in Hampton. He currently splits his residence between his homes in Los Angeles and England.
