Chapter Thirteen Luke left Lucky’s bedside only a few times that week. He paid his respects to the kids that died. The kids in the van were buried together and Luke watched the parents as they mourned their losses. He was grateful that his son was alive and knew he came close to losing him, as well. The coffin was too small for four lives to be put in. The thought of it being Lucky made him ill. The three that were thrown from the van died as well and they were buried all on the same day as their friends. PC was in morning for the dead and everyone hoped Lucky wouldn't join them. Sarah wasn't going to be buried until later in the week. Her parents and other family members were coming in from other parts of the world. Rick Webber had arrived the day of the first funerals. Luke and Rick ran into each other on the way up. “How's Lucky?” he asked. “He isn't awake yet but they say it is normal. I'm sorry about Sarah,” Luke said. “Me too. I’m here for Jeff and you. Lucky is Laura's son and I always thought of him as my grandson. I'm going to talk to Leslie, as well. I should have contacted her sooner but I didn't know what to say. I lost my second wife when she came back and I was angry with her. I should have been but now I'm ready to face her,” Rick said. “Thanks Rick and none of what happen is Leslie's fault. She is getting better and if it wasn’t for her, I would never understand half of what the doctors tell me,” Luke said. “You want me to a take look at Lucky?” Rick asked. “Sure, I always trusted your opinion,” Luke said leaning against the back wall and closing his eyes. “You're tired. Why not go home and get some rest?” Rick suggested. “I can’t. I have a son that needs me. I was blind for a long time and I thought he was ok. I don’t want him to think I’m like his mother,” Luke said. Rick didn't say anything about that. He knew from a friend at GH that Luke and Laura were divorced. He would have never thought that would have ever happened. The doors opened and Rick got out. He was going to see Liz first and then go up to see Lucky. Liz was getting ready to check out and Audrey was trying to get her to go home and not up to see Lucky. “Gram, no. I lost Sarah and I’m not losing Lucky. I need to see him before we go home,” Liz said close to tears again for the hundredth time this week. She had a broken wrist and a cut above her right eye. She had a few cracked ribs from the accident. Liz looked down at the ring Lucky had given her and kissed it. “Hi, Liz,” Rick said as he walked into the room. “Uncle Rick, I'm glad your here,” Lizzie said getting up to greet him. “I'm so glad you're here,” Rick said pulling her into his arms. “Your giving your Grandmother a hard time all ready.” “Yes, but I understand why. She just can't see Lucky right now,” Audrey said looking at Liz with sad eyes. “Liz, I will make a deal with you. I get you in to see Lucky and then you will go home,” Rick said looking at the girl with a grateful heart. “You can do that?” Liz asked grateful for being listened to for once. “I think we can get you to see him and besides, If you won Lucky’s heart over then Luke should be a push over,” Rick said and guided her into the wheel chair and the three of them headed up to the next floor. Luke was talking to Bobbie about what he missed that day, when Rick walked in with Liz and said, “I have a girl who wants to see Lucky but isn't a member of the family. Do you think we can make an exception?” “She is a member of the family in my books. Come on,” Luke said taking the wheel chair and pushing Liz into Lucky’s room. “I'll leave you two alone. Don’t worry Liz, Spencers are a tough breed,” Luke kissed her on the cheek and walked out. Liz got up from the wheel chair and walked to Lucky’s side. She gently touched his burnt skin and noticed the cuts on his neck. Liz put her head down on his chest and listened to his heartbeat. “Lucky, Sarah is dead. I don't know what to think about it. She was my sister but I hardly knew her. Please, Lucky. Don’t leave me,” Liz started to cry and she gently touched his hand and held it. Luke looked at Audrey and said, “I’m sorry about Sarah.” “I know but I’m grateful that it wasn’t both of them. I am also grateful that Lucky is alive. If you need anything call me. I need to be busy at a time like this. Sarah is happy and with her grandfather. She was always his favorite and I had a dream about them last night walking in a meadow together,” Audrey said with a sad smile. “I have to call Ruby. She will kill me if I don't keep her up to date on Lucky,” Luke said and went to use the phone. Rick grabbed Lucky’s chart and Bobbie watched him. “What do you think?” she asked. “I want to know why he hasn't had a CAT scan yet,” Rick asked her. “Tony is in his own little world and we haven't been able to find him. We are calling around at the other hospitals for someone to replace him. No one here can read the charts,” Bobbie said. “I can and if Lucky’s doctor will order the test, I will do what I can,” Rick said. “Thanks, Rick. I hate to think that Lucky suffered for my ex’s mistakes,” Bobbie said and went to make the call. Audrey and Rick walked to the window and watched Liz for a while. “Audrey, What happen here? Lucky’s doctor is an intern. Why is that?” Rick asked her. “After Steve's death, we lost a lot of good doctors and Mr. Cassadine replaced them with interns. The staff is trying its best but sometimes we slip up. Tony Jones and Alan Quartermaine are having family problems. They are off the staff right now. Tony doesn't know it yet. Bobbie was nice. Lucky needs a CAT scan but no one on staff can read the results. I'm glad you offered. I would hate to think that if Lucky died, we could have done something about it,” she said. “I’m glad to do it. I will leave you now. I have to do something before I chicken out,” Rick said, as he noticed Leslie walking down the hall. He walked away and stopped her a few doors down. “Why aren't you with Lucky?” he asked. “Rick? It’s been a long time. You here for Sarah funeral?” Leslie asked, taken back by how little he had changed. “Yes, and to talk to you. I'm sorry I haven't got in touch sooner but your rebirth came as my wife was dying and I didn't know what to think about it,” Rick said sadly. “I’m sorry and don't worry, I understand,” Leslie said, “As for why, I’m not with Lucky. Laura and Luke aren't talking. She is just down the hall. I play go between for her.” “What's going on with them?” Rick asked. “Laura had an affair with Stefan Cassadine. She first slept with on him on the island and later in Canada. Luke found out and blew up. Laura made things worse by not seeing Lucky. She doesn't know how to talk to him. She is now regretting it,” Leslie said shaking her head. “I don't believe this. I heard they were having problems but Laura is not talking to her son? Why?” Rick asked her. “I don’t know. I keep getting weird answers. I think Laura is on the verge of a break down but what worries me is that Lucky might join her,” Leslie said. “Lucky? Why do you say that?” Rick asked. “He is distant with everyone and I found out he has been drinking,” Leslie said. “Drinking? I have been gone a long time. You want to talk later?” Rick said. “I would like that. How about after Sarah's funeral? I know you will be busy with your family until then. I’m sorry for your loss and I’m grateful that Liz wasn't a part of that,” Leslie said and kissed Rick on the cheek and went to find Laura. Liz went home with Rick and her grandmother and slept the rest of the day. She woke up early, feeling much better and found Rick in the kitchen drinking coffee. “Good morning, Uncle Rick. Where's Gram?” she asked looking for something to eat. “She went to pick up your brother. His plane is due any minute. What are you going to do today?” he asked. “I’m going to the hospital. Lucky needs me and being there keeps my mind off of Sarah. I will be home by supper,” Liz said as she ate. “You love him, don't you?” Rick asked. “Yes, I love him. Lucky and I keep each other grounded. Sarah and Lucky didn’t get along. He used to like her but when she when she went after Nikolas, He started to notice me,” Liz said. “I’m glad. Now, get before your brother gets here and stops you from going,” Rick said. Liz smiled and went to call a cab. She arrived at GH around nine and found Luke still asleep on the couch. Bobbie smiled at her and put her finger to her lips and let Liz go into Lucky’s room. Bobbie looked at her brother and shook her head. She had brought him a blanket from home and put it over him. Ruby walked in right then and asked in a low voice. “You think he is hungry?” “I’m starved,” Luke said sitting up. Ruby sat down beside him and hand him the bag. Luke took out the muffin and the coffee and said, “You are a life saver.” “I have to keep you fed somehow. Any word on when Lucky is going to wake up?” she asked looking in the direction of his room. “No, but it should be any day now. I hope,” Luke said in between bites. Liz sat in the chair by Lucky’s bed and spoke in a loving voice. “My brother is coming in. I can’t wait ‘til you meet him. He was always my protector when I was younger. I hope you two get along. I read in the papers that they called off school all week. Gram says, I don’t have go back until next year. They are giving us credit because of the wreck. We get out of finals. Lucky, wake up. I need you. Sarah died and I feel like I didn't know her. We argued all the time but I never wanted her dead. I just wanted her to think of me once in a while. You're my best friend and if you go, I'm alone,” Liz said putting her head on his chest. Liz didn't notice it, but Lucky’ s hand slowly moved to her head and started to stroke her hair. He slowly opened his eyes and said in a very weak voice, “Why are you crying?” “Lucky?!” Liz said jumping up and running to the door. She yanked it open and said, “He’s awake.” Luke, Bobbie, and Ruby all rushed to his bedside. Luke looked down and noticed Lucky’s eyes were partly open. He took a deep breath and said, “Cowboy, you awake?” “Dad? What happened?” Lucky asked in a very weak voice. He slowly moved his head to look at everyone in the room. He was trying to remember what had happened but he couldn't clear his head at the moment. “We will talk about it later. All that matters for now is that you get some rest and get better,” Luke said slowly rubbing his hand over Lucky’s face. The burns had slowly gotten better. The doctors had told Luke in time they would go away all together. He might have a few slight scars on his face but you would have to look closely at him to see them. Luke really didn't care at all about Lucky’s looks. He was just grateful the kid was alive at all. Ruby bent down and kissed Lucky on the other cheek. “You scared me to death. I think you cut my life in half and I don't have much life to live. So, don't ever do that to me again.” Lucky smiled at her and closed his eyes. He was tired and all he could do was sleep. Liz bent over and kissed him good night and the group walked out and let him sleep. “What about his arm?” Liz asked Luke as they were in the other room. “We don't know, yet.” Luke said picking up the phone and calling Sonny. “Sonny, the kid woke up. He is going to be all right,” Luke said when Sonny answered the phone. They talked for a few minutes and then hung up. Luke turned to Liz and said, “The doctors say he is going to have a lot of rehab to learn to use it again. The bruises on his back had gone down and they think he will not have any trouble walking. We will not know until they run some more tests after he fully wakes up.” “I will do everything I can for him, Mr. Spencer. Thank you for letting me see him,” Liz said. “Doll, one, don’t call me Mr. Spencer. I’m not that old and second. Lucky would kill me if I kept you two apart. You are the only person in this world that has kept him stable. I know this and I’m grateful. I promise you this, Whatever you need from now on just ask and you got it,” Luke said and bent down and kissed her on the forehead. He went back into Lucky’s room and watched him sleep. Liz went for a walk and ran into Nikolas. “How is Lucky?” Nikolas asked, as he caught up with Liz. “He is awake and that's good. I heard what you did for us and I'm grateful. I know you tried to save Sarah as well. I hope you come to the funeral,” Liz said putting a hand on his shoulder. “I am going. Liz, Sarah and I fought that night and I was going for a walk to cool off. I should have just taken her home and then she would be alive now,” Nikolas said tears forming in his eyes. “You didn’t know this was going to happen, none of us did. Sarah is dead and so are the others. We can’t bring them back or change anything that happened. Be grateful that Lucky and the rest of us are alive. We have a second chance to live. We better not waste it thinking about the past,” Liz said kissing him on the cheek and wiping the tears away. “I’m glad Lucky has you. You're a special person and he going to need you,” Nikolas said. “Does Mom know Lucky’s awake?” “I don't know and I don't care,” Liz said coldly. “You are mad at her too?” Nikolas asked. “Yes for what she did to Lucky. I am mad at her. She shows up when he almost dies but other than that, Lucky’s on his own. Nikolas, why do you defend her?” Liz asked him. “I don’t know. I feel sorry for her and wish she could change. I’m like Lucky. I love mother as he loves his father. My father didn’t claim me. He made me his nephew and kept me at arm’s length. I know why mom didn't come to see Lucky and I understand it. I might not like it but I understand it. I don't trust my mother but I don't trust anyone. I expect to get hurt and that keeps me safe,” Nikolas said. “That isn't a way to live. I’m sorry for you and Lucky. You both got short ends of the stick on this all the way around,” Liz said. “I have to go back to Lucky. I don’t want to miss a second of him being awake.” Liz headed back down the hall and Nikolas watched her go. He decided that Laura should at least be informed of Lucky’s condition and went to find her. Laura was laying on the couch resting when Nikolas walked in. She sat up and said, “Nikolas, I’m glad your here. You didn’t hear anything about Lucky did you?” she asked hopefully. “That’s why I came. Lucky woke up a few minutes ago. Luke still won't let you see him?” Nikolas asked. “No, he won’t. I get information from everyone but Bobbie and Luke. They will not even look at me,” Laura said. “I’m sorry. Mom, can’t you just walk in there? You are his mother,” Nikolas said. “Scotty is working on it. I didn’t mention Lucky in our divorce proceedings. I was letting him decide and now I hardly have a say in his life,” Laura said. “You didn't fight for custody of him?” Nikolas asked shocked. “Why not?” “I thought he would get mad at me and not talk to me. I didn't want to force him to do anything he didn't want to do. I waited for him to come to me but now might be too late. Even if Lucky lives,” Laura said and tears started to fall. Nikolas sat beside her and held her close. Luke walked into the room and said, “I came to tell you he is awake and the doctors say he will walk again. The only thing he is going to have trouble with is his arm. Lucky is going to have to learn how to reuse it,” Luke said coldly and walked out after that. Laura got up and started to pace. “I don’t believe him. I know I messed up but he could at least show some emotion toward me. Nikolas, I'm going to fix a mistake I made a few months ago. I'm going to court and fight for Lucky,” Laura said and stormed out of the room. Nikolas put his head in his hands. He really wanted to scream but he just ended up crying. Gail Baldwin was walking by and heard him. She walked in the room and asked, “Nikolas, are you all right?” “No! I'm sick of the fighting. Eight kids died because of this damn war. Lucky lays just a few doors down and he is alive because he didn't get into that van. My father didn't claim me! My mother walked out on me! Luke wants me dead and Lucky hates my guts. I'm not all right,” Nikolas said as the tears started to fall. Gail sat down beside him and held him. When Nikolas finally calmed down, Gail looked at him and said, “Nikolas, come to my office. We can talk about anything you want and it will stay between us,” Nikolas and Gail headed to her office to talk.
