Chapter 7 Robin got off the elevator and was greeted by Renaldo. She ignored his hello, and went inside Jason's Penthouse. As soon as she stepped in, she saw Jason feeding Michael, and Caroline pouring a cup of coffee. Both Caroline and Jason were laughing about something. “Hello,” Robin said loudly. She then went over to Jason and planted a kiss on his lips. “Did you miss me last night?”, Robin asked. Jason looked at her, surprised at how he felt. He really hadn't noticed that she was gone. “Oh well”, he thought, “It was probably because I was too tired”. “I always miss you. You know that,” he said to her. Robin smiled and sat down at the table. “Hey Buddy!” she said to Michael as she rubbed his head. Michael squealed and seemed to stick his tongue out at her. Robin turned to Jason. “He's sticking his tongue out. I think he's still hungry.” Caroline fought hard not to laugh. “Michael sticks his tongue out at her, and she thinks he's hungry. Typical Robin, always thinking that the whole world adores her,” Caroline thought as she watched Robin pick up her son, and struggle as Michael squirmed to get loose. “No, I don't think he's hungry. Jason fed him a lot. I think he wants to play,” she said, taking her son away from the self-righteous evangelist. Robin watched as Caroline placed Michael on a blanket on the floor and made funny faces at him. Robin turned away from them, and sat back down beside Jason. “So what did you do yesterday?” she asked. “Caroline and I took Michael to see Niagara Falls.” Robin felt the venom inside her start to boil. “The three of you went to Niagara Falls TOGETHER? How come when I wanted to go there, you said tat you weren't interested in seeing tons of water?” Robin whined. Jason looked at Robin, trying to figure her out. He didn't understand why she was acting like a spoiled brat, and why Robin had been a bitch to Caroline the day before. “Maybe she's just upset about Caroline's place in my life, and feel a little insecure. She and Caroline never got along anyway,” he thought. “Caroline wanted to do something outdoors, since she was locked up for so long. I didn't expect rushing water to be so beautiful, and I do regret not going with you.” He paused and took her hand. “I love you.” Caroline was watching them, feeling jealous. Jason's back was towards her, but Robin saw the envy on her face. Robin smirked at Caroline, then made a big production of sitting on Jason's lap and kissing him passionately. Caroline turned away from them, trying to ignore her jealousy, and the sick feeling in her stomach. When Jason and Robin's kiss was done, Jason realized with a sinking feeling that Robin had done that for Caroline's benefit. “What is Robin trying to prove? She knows that I love her, and that I always will,” he thought. He then remembered that he had almost kissed Caroline the night before, and immediately felt guilty. ***************************** Outside of the Penthouse, Shane was getting off the elevator. “Um, hello. I'm here to see Caroline Benson”, he said to Renaldo, remembering that Caroline had told him that Jason had guards. “Is Ms. Benson expecting you?” Renaldo asked, as he eyed the man before him. “No, I wanted to surprise her.” “What's your name?” “Shane Roberts.” Upon hearing the familiar name, Renaldo nodded. “Wait here,” he said as he knocked on the door. “Come in,” came Jason's voice. Renaldo opened the door. “A Mr. Shane Roberts to see Ms. Benson”. Caroline spun around. “Shane's here?' “Yes. Surprise Caroline,” Shane said as he walked through the door. Caroline stared at him, trying to get over her shock. The next thing she knew, she was running towards him, and was in his arms. “I can't believe that you're her. Why didn't you tell me that you were coming?” Caroline said starting to cry tears of happiness. “Well, I left a hint in my message yesterday,” he replied, as he wiped away her tears with his band. “Message?” “Oh, I forgot to tell you. He did leave a message. I listened to it after we came back from Niagara Falls,” Jason said. The tension in the room was slowly building as Shane and Jason stared at each other. Caroline looked back and forth between the two men in front of her, and cleared her throat nervously. “Shane, this is Jason Morgan. He's been a very good friend to me, and he's a great father to Michael. Jason this is Shane Roberts. We've known each other since we were kids,” Caroline said, not wanting to admit that he was also her ex-fiancé. “Hello,” Shane said with no warmth in his voice, as he held out his hand. “Hello,” came Jason's equally cold reply as he shook Shane's hand. “And this is Robin Scorpio,” Caroline said, motioning to Robin. “I'm Jason's girlfriend,” Robin said, holding out her hand. Shane smiled as he shook Robin's hand. “So Jason has a girlfriend. I guess nothing really developed between him and Caroline,” he thought happily. “Shane, come meet Michael,” Caroline said, holding out her hand. Shane took her hand, and as Caroline led him to Michael, he threw one last icy look at Jason. Shane then went up to Michael, and his heart softened at the sight of the adorable infant. “Can I hold him?” “You know you don't have to ask,” Caroline said softly. Shane picked up Caroline's son, and smiled. How he wished Michael was his. An image of Eleyna flashed before him, as he touched Michael's hair. Red hair, just like Eleyna's. Caroline touched him, sensing that he was thinking about their daughter. Jason watched the threesome, experiencing the same feelings he had when he first heard the message from Shane on the answering machine. They were feelings of jealousy. “Why does it bother me to see Caroline with him?” he thought to himself. Robin was studying Jason, and was bothered to observe that he was visibly upset over Shane's presence. “Jason can't be jealous. He loves me. There's no way he can have feelings for that cold hearted bitch,” Robin thought, trying to convince herself. “So Shane, Caroline said you two have been friends since you were children, but I detect something more than just friendship. What's the story with you two?” Robin said innocently. If looks could kill, Robin would be dead. Caroline was about to tell Robin to keep her preachy nose out of her business, when Shane answered. “Well, Caroline and I started dating when we were fifteen, and we were together until she left Florida, almost three years ago.” “You two were involved for what… 7 years? Wow, your relationship must have been really serious. I mean, seven years is longer than some marriages,” Robin said, her voice sickeningly sweet. Caroline and Shane looked at each other at the mention of marriage. “Well, well, well. Looks like there's a story here,” Robin thought wickedly, “Now how am I going to bring it out?” She turned to Jason, and said, “Jason why don't we go upstairs and let the two lovebirds visit in private.” Once Jason and Robin were upstairs, Caroline turned to Shane, not knowing what to say. “I missed you. I missed our talks and the fun we used to have.” “I missed you too. I'd do anything to turn back the time, and recapture what we had.” “Me to. What we had was so perfect… at the time. Now we're older, and our lives are different, going in different direction.” Shane reached in his pocket, and pulled out her ring. As soon as Caroline saw the ring, she looked away, trying to force the pain to disappear. Shane tilted her face toward him. “Caroline, I know that it hurts. It hurts me too. I bought the engagement ring for you, and only you. I know we're not getting married anymore. It's my fault, and I'm sorry. But I want you to keep the ring, as a reminder of our love.” “I'll always remember our love. I'll never forget what we shared,” Caroline said, looking in his eyes. “And it’s not totally your fault. What you did hurt, but at the time, we were both trying to handle the pain. We didn't get married, and have the life we planned, but we still have our friendship.” “I'm still in love with you,” Shane said, while putting the ring in her hand. Caroline stared at the ring. “I know. I'm still in love with you too. But I have a life here in port Charles.” “I know. A life where I don't fit in,” Shane said quietly. Caroline looked at Shane. ‘You'll always fit into my life. Nobody could ever replace you. Just like nobody could ever replace Carly, Mom… or Eleyna.” Caroline stood up. “Why don't we go to the park with Michael? We can feed the birds and talk,” she suggested. “Okay,” Shane agreed, and stood up also. *************** On the top of the stairs, Robin and Jason stood, watching them. They had heard the whole conversation. Jason rubbed his temple, as he tried to digest the news that Shane was Caroline's ex-fiancé. The pangs of jealousy kicked in harder as he remembered Caroline saying that she still loved Shane. Jason looked at Robin, who was standing beside him. Robin. Sweet Robin, who he loved with all his heart. Robin was so familiar to him, part of him. Robin was his everything. “Robin is the woman I love. I'm sure of it. So why can't I stop thinking about Caroline?” he wondered.
