If you are requesting an autographed photo, here are some tips I've found very useful:
Hand write the letter so it looks more personal
Include a 9 by 11 SASE (Self addressed stamped envelope)
Don't just ask for an autograph, talk about the show, their other work, etc, then ask nicely
Don't say if you're a collector, it'll make them less likely to comply
