Am I the only one who's noticed that in the commercial video releases of Brideshead Revisited the last episode is missing a good half hour, from the time Lord Marchmain arrives in Brideshead to the part when he dies? I've seen the series several times on television and have even taped it and the TV version is definitely longer. I'd welcome some replies.

Hi! This page is fab! I tried to e-mail comments to you but failed utterly so thought I'd try it this way instead... I think all the central characters were each on a personal quest for faith. They all went through their dark places and found the light, including Sebastian. I don't think he was ever forgotten about, but he had came to the end of his quest, and so those of us who felt for the character were sorry that t e focus moved to Julia. Each of the characters also had to lose a lot to gain their faith, which makes it a little confusing to non-Catholics such as myself, especially since, on the surface, they seemed much happier in the beginning. However, this is a credit to both novel & tv adaptation since they retain the subtlety necessary to make us actually think - and enjoy it! I adore both book & film, and especially Sebastian, who was in love with his own childhood; a character t ait I'm afflicted with myself! Rozz.

Hi, just writing to say this is a very good site. I'm fifteen years old, have read the book and seen the TV series. It's absolutely brilliant, a masterpiece they could never come up with now. I watch it and I always want Sebastian to be OK, but of cour e he never is. Congratulations from the next generation to the actors who did such a superb job on the production, especially Anthony Andrews, who was the perfect Sebastian.

I read almost everywhere on the Internet that Sebastian and Charles are having a homosexual relaationship. But in the TV series, they don't even hug each other? Except the place at "The Old Hundreth" where it is hinted that Sebastian and Charles seem like homosexuals, there is no direct indications that they are! First of all the remark by the women at "The Old Hundreth" is almost dropped at once by Evelyn Waugh instead of starting a train of thought in Charles. Sebastian reacts to the remark by inviting t e women to dance with them. Furthermore, Charles is having a relationship with a woman, Julia, and seems to at the same time distance himself from Anthony Blanche's homosexuality. How do we know that Charles is neglecting a hidden homosexuality that Sebas ian and Charles are having a serious romantic relationship and not just being very good friends? The word "love" doesn't help much in the book as it is used in every possible sense anyway! When you view the movie, the actors really is acting very formal r les and doesn't show any direct evidence of kissing or having sex( naturally, because it's extremely repulsive for a straight to have gay sex), except the fact there are scenes where either Charles or Sebastian is to some extent naked. These scenes hint a what things they might do, but it's very uncomfortable not to be entirely sure, and the book certainly doesn't give you any facial expressions or movements of the person's hands that suggest homosexuality? I'm too watching the series being sent on the Da ish channel, but after reading the book, I've come to doubt whether Sebastian and Charles are gay or just good friends. Thanx in advance for any comments. I'm really not an expert at BR, but this particular topic interest me a great deal( guess why).

"According to Waugh, a convert to Roman Catholicism, the novel was intended to show "the operation of divine grace" in the affairs of a particular group of people. This is revealed through the story of the wealthy Roman Catholic Marchmain family as told b Charles Ryder, a friend of the family. Despite the seeming indifference to, or outright repudiation of, the church by various members of the family, particularly Lord Marchmain, his daughter Julia, and his son Sebastian, by the end of the novel each has hown some sign of acceptance of the faith." from The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature: http://www.readthemovie.com/actors/amazon.cgi?0745163467

Hello Joe, I saw your comments on Bridehead Revisited on Anna's Anthony Andrews page. I think I'd be interested in responding to your comments. To refresh your memory, here are your comments on April 27,98, copied as follows: I read the book about half a dozen times and have seen Granada TV's excellent series where the casting was close to "Casblancan" standards. My favourite tv performance was Anthony Andrews - what an actor! My favourite character from the book was Lady Mar main. Waugh brilliantly captures her hypocrisy and disfunctionality as a wife and parent. She is presented using her religion, the past and in particular her dead brothers as a weapon against everyone - even her immediate family. A sad case but as a Cath ic myself I know that "The Faith" is passed on through quite unlikely people and she too had her part to play in the intervention of Divine Grace amongst the protagonists. The following is my response: I couldn't agree more with you on how great the cast is. Yet I don't think that Lady Marchmain was portrayed as using her religion against everyone. In my opinion it's quite to the contrary, she was perfect, almost a saint. She was not hypocritical, she b lieved in everything she preached to her children and lived those dogma herself. In fact she tried so hard to find a way to better reach out to her children, like when she commented on the "Alice in wonder land side of religion" to Charles. The mere fact f her wanting to be friends with Charles is really part of her efforts to be able to reach out to his son. Yet she was so hated, why? On one hand it's really easily understandable. What is life like to live with someone so perfect? and furthermore, so ful of loving expectations for one's own good? Just like Lady Marchmain complained to Charles, they are all ashamed of themselves and want to run away from her, Sebastian, Lord Marchmain, exactly the people whom she love and care most, and yet unfortunately ho turn out to hate her precisely resulting from her angelic love. Why do they hate her? Cara gave us the best answer in the book: "they are a volcano of hate... when people hate with all that energy, it's something in themselves that they are hating." In fact, Lady Marchmain is a wonder. She is one of the most enchanting characters of the book. I think she definitely hold the best intention for her children and her husband, she would never want to do something like "using religion as a weapon against p ople". She is full of love for Lord Marchmain, Sebastian, Julia, all her children. Yet she believes not merely in the faith alone, but also the church dogma associated with it. So she set out on the task of being a good wife and mother with those principl s as her guideline. Being a good Catholic wife, she wouldn't divorce her husband. Being a good Catholic mother, she wanted Sebastian to make more Catholic friends at college, she wouldn't let Julia marry Mottram(who is unweddable due to previous divorces) Being a good wife and mother, she pray for her children and her husband and carry their sins to bed... Yet what she was never able to understand throughout her devout life was the actual effect her saintliness has brought about. As Julia and Cordelia bo h said at some point, "when people hate God, they hate mommy." cos obviously one can't hate God, and for the Flytes, they all seem unwilling to hate the Church either, so they hate Lady Marchmain. I'm sorry that I babbled on. I guess I do love talking about this book. Any sort of response would be greatly appreciated at wildefan@hotmail.com Jing

Hello Joe, I saw your comments on Bridehead Revisited on Anna's Anthony Andrews page. I think I'd be interested in answering your questions. Here are your comments as copied: I just watched a videotaped Brideshead marathon I found while dismantling my father's country home following my mother's death some months ago. I suppose my mother had it for some reason. I remember vaguely as a 8 year old it on PBS. I still have a hard t me understanding it. Castle Howard is amazing. But what is Waugh saying about Roman Catholicism? Is its orthodox dogma crushing its own flock as modern society grows? Is that why it is a remembrance of times past? Divorce, sexuality, power, & wealth, are hese all notions that the church stands as the real only moral force? Or is it that the Roman Catholics even as high born as the Brideshead bunch are destined for destruction & misery in an ever increasing secular and freer world? Hmmmm? Here's my opinion: I don't think at all that it's saying that the Catholic dogma are crushing its own "flock", or that the Catholics are destined for destruction & misery in this changing world ( as I don't think it's necessary growing more secular and freer) On the contrar if you notice how in the end Ryder became all of a sudden cheerful after he came out of the castle into the fresh air, you'd get the hint that it's definitely hope, not destruction. Yet why was he cheerful? After all he really was still "childless, lovel ss, middle-aged", nothing had changed. I believe that it's because of his faith, which had been developing in him since he came to know Sebastian. I think he might have experienced something like a revelation during his visit to the chapel in the end. His "newly learned language" brought him infinite yet a profound and tranquil sort of joy that ran through him in the end, even though practically nothing in reality changed for him during the short visit to the chapel. Yet by looking at how he was miserable, hating the army and could hardly cheer up at all, one could see the positive changes his new faith brought him. I believe Waugh seriously thought about the significance of this ending. It's definitely hope. Yet to some extent I think Waugh is presenting the problem of conflicts between the Catholic faith and the dogma preached by the church. On one hand he said through Julia that "Sebastian has never left God as definitely as I (Julia) did", yet Sebastian wa never able to escape from this feelings of shame of himself. Sebastian, as sympathetic readers would all agree, is good-hearted and full of love to give (even at the time when he's distressed with the threat that his mother might take Charles away from h m, Ryder said, still, "he has not failed in love, but he lost the joy of it"). With love for God and for fellow human beings as the essence of Christianity in a broad sense, one couldn't agree more with Julia's comments that "he never left it(Catholicism) as definitely as I did". Sebastian had always been a practising Catholic at heart. Yet, with the dogma preached to him throughout his life when he grew up, his naughty behaviours with Charles would definitely be high among the list of sins. Thus I believe that Waugh is presenting some of the conflicts, but his general outlook on Catholicism is definitely positive and hopeful. I made some comment on Anna's page about the book too. I would love to hear your response if you'd be so kind. I think I simply love talking about this book. It is simply enchanting. Jing

After viewing a little bit of the guest book, I want to add some more comment. I really LOVE the book itself by Evelyn Waugh. First I was so charmed by the beautiful language and the love (as Charles said, "to know and love one other human being is the ro t of all wisdom") that pervades throughout the book. Then the more I read it, the more I became interested in Catholicism. A year after I experienced a true revelation and became spiritual to a certain extent. Then afterwards I read parts of the book agai , and it was making so much more sense once again. In all I think it's a great book about love, religion, meaning of life etc. After further understanding and the establishment of faith in God, it doesn't puzzle me so much any more why Ryder became all of a sudden happy in the end when he stepped out of the castle into fresh air. One puzzling thing that I sometimes debate with myself about is whether Sebastian really had sex with Charles and Kurt. My opinion is that he probably did to some extent with Charles (as Charles later alluded to the naughty things that are high in the lis of sins), but probably not with Kurt. I think that his dependence on Kurt is more in a religious sense rather than romantic. He wanted to give his love and feel that it's needed. I do think this love he had for Kurt is more religious and out of his good atholic heart rather than romantic. I simply love talking about this book, any comments are welcome at wildeFan@hotmail.com. I just watched a videotaped Brideshead marathon I found while dismantling my father's country home following my mother's death some months ago. I suppose my mother had it for some reason. I remember vaguely as a 8 year old it on PBS. I still have a hard time understanding it. Castle Howard is amazing. But what is Waugh saying about Roman Catholicism? Is its orthodox dogma crushing its own flock as modern society grows? Is that why it is a remembrance of times past? Divorce, sexuality, power, & wealth, are these all notions that the church stands as the real only moral force? Or is it that the Roman Catholics even as high born as the Brideshead bunch are destined for destruction & misery in an ever increasing secular and freer world? Hmmmm?

I have been thilent for tho many years now; partly because I did not want to remember the German concentration camps and partly because I did not want to refresh the memory of poor Thebastian wearing himself down in the everlasting quest for love and unde standing. But now, as the time of my parting from this world is near, I can no longer be silent. It´s been given out, and Thebastian thought that too, that I did hang myself in the first week of my imprisonment. It´s not true, I´m still alive. The man who told Thebastion that I was dead took me for another. And Thebastian, poor lovely Thebastian went back to Morocco and got lost. The world´s got to believe me: I loved him more than anything else.

As a Catholic, I found the story of Catholic sinners, who ultimately returned to the Church (Lord Marchmain, Lady Julia) to be quite touching. For those who know their Catholic theology and philosophy, there is much food for thought in this story.

The novel and the book are first class. I thought the film portrayed the 1920s atmosphere of Oxford and society, when political correctness was unheard off and an Englishman was a gentleman. Oxford seems so charming. Charles Ryder and Anthony Andrews were the perfect actors for the parts of Sebastian and Charles. An excellent film.

Comments:
I read the book about half a dozen times and have seen Granada TV's excellent series where the casting was close to "Casblancan" standards. My favourite tv performance was Anthony Andrews - what an actor! My favourite character from the book was Lady Mar hmain. Waugh brilliantly captures her hypocrisy and disfunctionality as a wife and parent. She is presented using her religion, the past and in particular her dead brothers as a weapon against everyone - even her immediate family. A sad case but as a Cath lic myself I know that "The Faith" is passed on through quite unlikely people and she too had her part to play in the intervention of Divine Grace amongst the protagonists.

'Brideshead Revisited' works on so many levels. It is a range of love stories, a study in the loss of faith in aspects of the world, an account of gaining faith in something beyond this world, a lament for a world that never was, a fear for a world that ight be ... Its prose is alternately beautiful and overwritten, yet it is always utterly convincing and captivating. If it is possible, in our time, to be seduced by language then this novel is one of the very few which could be held responsible.

It's so nice to see a place on the web about Brideshead, one of the saddest and sweetest stories I know. Fiona, you're great and keep up the good work. It's probably hard for you to find pictures that are Brideshead related I would think, well I do pencil drawings of Charles, Sebastian and Aloysious and if I can get them scanned, I'll send them to you by mail, okay? "How was your vacation?" "I went to Venice" "Yes, yes, I suppose so."

Anthony Blanche is just too too. I had a room identical to Charle's at Trinity College, Toronto. I can safely say no one spilled sick into my window. (I daren't recall how many times people were getting sick out of it though.)
