WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19, 1998

SOUTH BAY GENERAL: Francesca watched Cole and Caitlin enviously. When Caitlin went in to see Trey, Cole caught up with her and accused her of spying on him. She let him know that she was only there because they were holding her for observation because of her bullet wound. Cole apologized for leaping to conclusions. Francesca insisted that she never wanted the kind of family life he has. She also informed him that Gregory asked her questions about their relationship. Cole wanted to know what she told Gregory and grabbed her arm, which landed her back in a hospital bed. He apologized.

Francesca and Cole reminisced about their days as jewel thieves, but Cole stopped himself when they remembered how aroused they got by their first successful job. Just as Cole was about to leave, Francesca assured him that she didn't tell Gregory anything. Outside, a nurse brought Francesca's bracelet to Caitlin and asked if it was hers. Caitlin recognized it as Francesca's. Soon after, Caitlin walked in on Francesca and Cole sharing a tender moment.

THE BEACH: Emily told Sean that Bette overdid the mother/daughter thing. When Sean asked how Bette took the news that Emily didn't want to live with her, Emily said that she wasn't too hurt by it. He pointed out that Bette has a knack for covering up her hurt feelings. He left to see Trey, giving her a kiss good-bye first.

OLIVIA'S HOUSE: Annie went to see Bette. She noticed that something was bothering her aunt. Bette told her that Emily was back, but that she didn't want to move in with her. Bette made excuses for her daughter, telling Annie that she has to bear in mind all of the pain that Emily has been through. Annie pointed out that Bette has had her own share of pain.

When Bette retreated upstairs, Emily knocked at the door. Annie greeted her with hostility, blasting her cousin for how she was treating Bette. When Emily said her mother was never exactly "parent material," Annie insisted that Bette was a better mother to her than her own was. Bette overheard Annie telling Emily that love is a two-way street, and that if she wanted to screw up a relationship, she could do it with a guy, not with Bette. Annie left.

Bette apologized on Annie's behalf, but Emily admitted that she was right. Emily wanted to start again, but she was afraid that she ruined things when she turned down Bette's offer to move in with her. Bette was overjoyed when Emily agreed to move in.

THE ISLAND: A plane passed overhead, but Casey didn't have enough time to flag it. Casey decided that they needed to be ready to signal the next plane or they'd be stuck there for days or weeks. Sara asked herself if that would be so bad.

When Sara confessed that she felt useless, Casey told her that she came up with as many good ideas as he did. He told her that Meg isn't as perfect as Sara seems to believe. He recounted how scared and alone Meg was when she first came to Sunset Beach.

Casey and Sara set up a signal fire and then decided to get some sleep. There was only one bed, and Sara suggested that they share. When Sara confessed that she didn't really want to leave, Casey assumed that she means that it's a relief not having to dodge reporters. Later, Casey woke up with his arm around Sara and they kissed.

ELSEWHERE: A fisherman discovered a roll of film inside a fish's gut. Could it be the infamous film with Casey and Sara's pictures on it?!

CEDAR OAKS: Maria informed Dr. Estrada that she dreamed of being in Ben's house, and that everything seemed familiar, as if she belonged there. Dr. Estrada suggested that the dream was an expression of her desire to have a place where she belonged. She thought Maria should see Meg more often.

When Maria said that she spoke Spanish during the quake, Dr. Estrada told her that she might be a Latina. She gave Maria a few Spanish test phrases, but nothing really rang any bells with her. Dr. Estrada believed that Maria's memories may come back in her dreams, and recommended that she keep a dream journal.

AN ISLAND: Ben and Meg landed on an island that looked like someone has been there recently. Meg spotted a heart with the letter "B" carved into a tree, and Ben told her that he came here with Maria once. They were passing by, and it looked secluded, so they stopped there for a while.

Meg suggested that they split up to cover the island more efficiently. Ben was plagued by memories of Maria, first when Maria showed him that she'd carved his initial into the tree, then Maria reading his palm. Meg returned. Neither one has seen any sign of Sara or Casey.

Meg knew that Ben was thinking about Maria, but she understood, because Maria is a part of who he is. He declared that it didn't matter what was in his past, because his future was with Meg.

BEN'S HOUSE: While Tim pondered how to handle his discovery that Dana is Maria, Annie came to see how Ben's house fared. Tim answered the door. Annie remarked that Maria taught her everything she knows about telling a lie, because she could get away with anything with her angelic face. After Annie left, Tim wondered if Maria was pretending to have amnesia.

THE HELICOPTER: Meg realized that how she feels when looking for Sara must be how Ben felt when he was looking for Maria. Suddenly, they saw something.
