Chapter 1

Cory Enterprises

Amanda drummed her fingers on the desk. She stared at the layouts she had spread in front of her. The first edition of Brava had to be perfect. It had to grab the attention of everyone. Brava would be the magazine that every woman in the United States and Canada had to have. Still a shadow clouded the first edition because Amanda couldn't help but feel that she had lost her best story all because of Josie. She shook her head.

"No, you're not going down that road today. You've got a magazine to publish."

She turned on the radio and leaned back as the piano played a soothing melody. She closed her eyes as Reba McEntire began singing.

"The first time I laid my eyes on you I knew
We'd spend this life side by side. . .
I swear that you'll always be my
Forever love. . . ."
(Reba McEntire 1998)

Amanda smiled and picked up the framed snapshot of Cameron and Alli that had been taken just a couple of weeks ago. She couldn't stop the smile that came to her face every time she looked at the beaming faces looking back at her from the photograph. She thought back to that day when Cameron had talked both of them in to going fishing with him.

"Come on. It'll be fun"

"Cameron, honestly, fishing?" Amanda asked with her hands on her hips.

"You're chicken. That's all."

Amanda's eyebrows knitted together. She glared first at Cameron then at Alli who was laughing hysterically. She raised her chin and fixed Cameron with her most intimidating glare.

"I'm not afraid of anything."

"Wimp."

Amanda lunged at Cameron knocking him off balance and they both landed in a heap on the ground. Alli was crying at this point. She was gasping for air. Cameron looked at Amanda and Amanda looked at Cameron.

"Let's get her," they said in unison.

Amanda had become quite the photographer since she and Cameron had gotten married. Her camera was never far away and she took pictures of everything. Cameron had told her more than once exactly where he wanted to put that camera but Amanda always managed to distract him from his purpose. Amanda was up from the laughing heap before Alli and Cameron knew she was gone. Cameron helped Alli to her feet and as they turned to face Amanda she'd snapped their picture.

Amanda touched her swelling waistline. Four more months and the baby would be here. Her clothes were starting to get tight. She would complain to Cameron about it and he would always assure her that she looked beautiful. Thinking about the baby brought her back to thoughts of the lost story. Instead of pushing her thoughts of the story aside once again, she removed the thick file from her desk drawer. As she thumbed through the information she'd gathered, she could feel the adrenaline rushing through her veins. Her investigative juices were in overdrive. She wanted to bust this baby selling ring wide open but she couldn't do it alone.

Sinclair and Sinclair

Cameron threw the newspaper in the trash with disgust. He looked at the empty desk across from his own. It was a familiar sight. Gary's heart wasn't in it. No matter how he'd try to entice Gary to take on a case nothing had worked. Gary's self-imposed exile from the world worried Cameron. At least, Felicia had convinced him to go back to AA and he wasn't hitting the booze every night. That was something but still he felt guilty. He wished Gary could see a way to get past Josie's deceit and infidelity. But that wasn't happening and Cameron didn't broach the subject with him.

Cameron also knew that it was hard for Gary to face him every day. Sure they had gotten past their problems. They were mending their brotherly bond every day. But Gary was also faced with Cameron's happiness. It was something Cameron couldn't hide. He didn't want to hide it. He had a beautiful wife, a great marriage, a family he was proud of and a baby on the way. Smiling wasn't something he'd done a lot of in his lifetime and for the last two months, he hadn't stopped smiling.

The ever present smile dimpled his cheeks as he traced Amanda's lips in the picture on his desk. She was beautiful and glowed more every day. She'd been complaining this morning about her clothes being tight. But he honestly couldn't tell a thing was different. He didn't tell her but he couldn't wait until she was so big that she waddled when she walked. He'd pictured it a million times and each time a smile lit his face.

He fished the newspaper back out of the trash. It was time for them to look for a place to live. He didn't mind living at the Cory house but there was no privacy. Amanda was more anxious than him to move out but it always seemed that they distracted one another when they started talking about what they wanted to do. That's why he'd started checking out places to live on his own. He'd gotten nowhere. He wanted the perfect setting and so far nothing met his standards.

"Why am I sitting here?"

Cameron grabbed his keys and headed for the door. He opened the door just in time to enfold a weeping Josie in his arms.

Cory Enterprises

Amanda knew just exactly who would help her with her story. Oh, he'd try to talk her out of it but she had ways of persuading him. And she'd pull out all the stops.

She picked up her keys and headed out the door. Just what was that husband of hers up to today?

Sinclair and Sinclair

Cameron tried to push Josie away but she held on tighter. Cameron dropped his arms to his sides and said nothing as Josie continued to cry.

"Josie, please, tell me what's wrong?"

For the first time, she noticed that Cameron was no longer holding her and she stepped away from him. Her hair looked like it hadn't been combed for days (what's new) and her face was swollen from crying.

"Where's Gaaaa--ry? I can't find him. I've looked everywhere."

Cameron turned his back on her and walked to the opposite side of the room.

"Gary doesn't want to be found."

"It's been months now, Cameron. He's forgiven you. Why can't he forgive me?"

Cameron sighed. He really didn't want to have this conversation with her.

"I don't know, Josie. Listen. This is something for you and Gary to work out."

Josie began crying again, "Cameron, please, please help me."

Josie grabbed his shirt trying to hug him. Cameron removed her hands from him and walked away. Josie looked at him with shock and confusion.

"Cameron, I thought you would help me. I thought you cared about Gary and me."

"Josie, I'm sorry if this sounds cold, but from the beginning everything has been about you and what you needed and what you wanted. It almost cost me the only woman I've ever loved. I can't help you."

Josie stared at him not wanting to believe what she was hearing.

"So, you've truly become a Cory now and you're looking down your nose at me. You are judging me!"

"You know better than that."

"I should have known that Amanda would turn you against me."

"I make up my own mind."

"Sorry, I bothered you."

Josie swung around to leave only to be stopped by the cold glare of Amanda Cory Sinclair.

Chapter 2

Josie tried to push past Amanda. Amanda grabbed her wrist, stopping her. Josie narrowed her eyes and tried to jerk her arm away. Amanda continued to fix her with cold eyes.

"Let me go," Josie demanded through gritted teeth.

"I want to get a few things straight. This is the last time I will say these words to you. So listen carefully. Stay away from my husband. Stay away from my family. And stay away from me. Cameron has made his feelings very clear to you yet you continue to come to him for help. This is the last time, Josie. Do you understand?"

"Loud and clear," she spat as she finally broke free of Amanda's grasp and ran down the hall.

"I really wish you wouldn't get yourself worked up like that. It's not good for the baby," Cameron told Amanda with concern.

"Cameron?"

"Yeah?"

"Shut up."

Cameron was shocked for a minute then smiled. Amanda floated across the distance between them and wrapped her arms around him. She lifted her lips to his and he met her half way. They kissed slowly, hungrily as if they hadn't seen each other for days.

"I missed you," Amanda breathed.

"It's only been two hours," he laughed.

"A lifetime. I hope you don't think I was out of place with what I said to Josie."

Cameron stepped away from her and paced around the room for a few seconds before turning back to her.

"No, I think you said what needed to be said to her," he sighed. "There was a time when I would have done anything to help Gary and Josie get back together but I've had time to step back from the situation. My main concern has to be my brother and right now he's better off without her. I've seen a different side of Josie, a selfish side. Maybe something will happen someday to change my mind."

Amanda hugged him, "You are a good man, Cameron Sinclair."

Cameron still didn't quite believe those words, but it still made his heart swell with pride for his wife when she said them.. He hugged her tightly. She was everything to him. He never thought he could love anyone as much as he loved Amanda.

"What's this?" Amanda asked as she stepped back from Cameron still in the circle of his arms. She placed her finger on the open newspaper on his desk.

"I was just looking."

"You told me that you didn't care. That you didn't mind living in my family's house."

Cameron shrugged, "I don't mind living there but sometimes I can tell that you do. And I'll admit there is no privacy."

"There's lots of 'x's' on this page. Have you checked out all of these places?"

"Most of them."

Amanda shook her head at him in amazement.

"Are you looking for a house with a white picket fence?"

Cameron smiled, "I don't think I'm married to a white-picket-fence kind of girl."

Amanda elbowed him in the ribs causing him to grunt in pain.

"What do you have in mind, Sinclair?"

"I don't know. Something simple where there's the scent of vanilla and cinnamon in the air. Or something that just feels like home. I'll know it when I see it."

"I hope that these visions of vanilla and cinnamon-scented air don't mean that you're having some fantasies about me becoming the happy homemaker."

Cameron nodded absently as he pictured Amanda in a '50's bouffant hair-do and a proper dress complete with starched white apron.

"I could definitely picture you that way. . . . .not!"

"There is a place that I have in mind. I hadn't really thought much about it until now. Come on. Let's go."

"Where are you taking me?" Cameron asked.

"You'll see," she told him as she tugged at his hand and smiled mysteriously.

***********************

Cameron looked skeptically at the brick structure that overlooked the beach. He'd seen it many times before as he jogged on the Cory estate but he'd never paid much attention to it.

"What is this place?"

"It's our beach house."

"Beach house? You're telling me that the Corys need a beach house just a few miles from the main house?"

Amanda shook her head at him, "It's been in the family for years. Jamie lived here at one time. Aha, here it is!"

Amanda had found the hidden key to the house. She smiled when the old lock gave way easily and she swept inside.

"Voile!"

Cameron sneezed a couple of times and looked around at the inside of the house. All of the furniture was covered by sheets. He stood in the middle of the living room and turned in circles. Amanda opened the French doors which led to the balcony and down to the beach. The gentle breeze flowed through the room. Cameron walked out onto the balcony that looked out over the lake.

"What do you think?" Amanda asked hopefully.

"This is your beach house? It's huge, Amanda."

"It needs a good cleaning and some redecorating, but I don't think it will take much."

Cameron wasn't sure why but he liked it. He liked the openness. It felt like a home waiting for a family to make it whole.

"I like it," he smiled and grabbed Amanda around the waist. "I can see a Christmas tree in that corner and our stockings over the fireplace. I can see our families barbecuing on the balcony and the two of us building sand castles on the beach. I can hear laughter floating from upstairs as we give our child its bath."

Amanda felt the mist in her eyes. Who was this man? How had she ever lived before he ran into her life?

"You amaze me, Cameron. Should I take your answer as a 'yes'?"

"When do we move in?"

****************

Amanda stared at the ceiling as Cameron slept beside her. She'd poked him a few times on purpose trying to awaken him but he just kept sleeping. She rolled to her side and snuggled up closer to him tucking her head under his chin. She kissed his neck and closed her eyes as she wiggled trying to make herself comfortable.

"All right, I've had enough. Why aren't you sleeping?" Cameron sighed.

Amanda feigned innocence, "Did I wake you?"

Cameron raised one eyebrow, "Did you wake me? Isn't that what you've been trying to do for the last twenty minutes?"

Amanda smiled and shook her head at him.

"I really didn't mean to. . . ."

"You meant to. You know that I'm awake as soon as your breathing changes."

It was true. Cameron was attuned to every change in her. He wouldn't let her be hurt by anyone. He wasn't ready to go through another Stark incident any time soon.

Amanda stroked the crease on his forehead trying to smooth his furrowed brow. She knew what he was remembering. She wished she could remove those memories but there was nothing she could do.

"So what is it? What's bothering you?"

Amanda took a deep breath and turned her face away from him, "I've really been concerned about the premier issue of Brava. There's so many things I want for this magazine. We're ready to go to press and I can't help but think there's something missing."

"Amanda. . ."

"Shhhh, just listen. I know that it's too late for this issue but there's something that I just can't let go. I can't get this baby selling ring out of my head.. I want to finish this story. It's more important to me now more than ever."

When Cameron didn't answer immediately, Amanda made the mistake of leaning up on her elbow to look into his face. Her own face fell as she looked into the disbelief and anger she saw there.

Cameron sighed heavily as he tried to collect his thoughts. He leaned up on his elbow facing her and placed his hand on Amanda's shoulder. She returned his steady gaze.

"These are dangerous people, Amanda. We almost lost you just a few short months ago. And we won't even discuss the fact that you are pregnant. It's out of the question."

Amanda became angry. She jerked away from him. Cameron was immediately just as angry with her.

"I didn't ask your permission. Are you telling me not to do it?"

Cameron took a deep breath trying to choose his words carefully, "I'm telling you that I don't think this is the time to start this investigation again. There are too many risks involved."

"I was hoping you would help me but I guess that's out of the question."

Cameron closed his eyes, "I'm just asking you to postpone this. Please, Amanda."

"I'll think about it," she told him as she flopped back onto the mattress and pulled the sheet and comforter up to her chin. She turned to her side with her back to him.

Cameron opened and closed his mouth several times before he laid back on the pillow and stared at the ceiling. He sighed loudly. He knew that she'd already thought about it. She'd made her decision. He jerked the sheet around his shoulders and made enough noise to let her know just what he thought of her "thinking". Then he turned on his side with his back to her.

Chapter 3

Two Weeks Later

The Harbor Club

Cameron stood in the corner sipping a glass of champagne. It didn't bother him that he was alone. He had a perfect view of the room and the most wonderful view of his wife. She was absolutely glowing. It was amazing what could happen in the span of two weeks. Amanda's stomach had grown noticeably. She had agonized over her dress. She was beautiful no matter what she wore and tonight was no exception. The strapless, black dress fit her perfectly and almost concealed her swelling abdomen. Her hair was upswept and small locks of hair framed her face. Her only jewelry were her rings and a slim gold necklace with the tiniest diamond tear drop.

Amanda was working the room. She glanced over at Cameron every once in a while sharing a secret lovers' smile. This was her big night. The first issue of Brava had hit the stands that morning. Tonight was Cory Enterprises' celebration of the new Brava.

Cameron was brought out of his silent admiration of his wife as Felicia grabbed his free hand. He smiled slightly as she took his arm and they began walking together as they talked.

"Well, I see that you still only have eyes for Amanda."

"Always."

"Have you seen Gary?"

"Actually, I was hoping that he might show up here tonight."

"Really? I think Gary is avoiding the world, Cameron. Why would he come here when he doesn't even come to work?"

"I thought he might do it for Amanda. He's forgiven her."

Felicia raised her eyebrows and looked at Amanda, "She's glowing."

Cameron smiled, "Yes, she is."

"You wouldn't have anything to do with that would you?"

Cameron did something very uncharacteristic and very spontaneous as he leaned forward and kissed Felicia on the cheek.

"Absolutely," he whispered in her ear as he walked away.

"Well, somebody's in a good mood tonight," she said with a smile.

As Cameron swaggered across the room, Amanda's eyes never left him. God, he was so beautiful! She could feel her goosebumps rise as she watched him. He had no idea what he could do to a woman. He looked so handsome in his new black double-breasted suit and snow white shirt. She knew he was uncomfortable, but that man could wear a suit. Cameron stopped at the end of the bar and leaned up against it. Their eyes locked. Amanda licked her lips and started to excuse herself, but Matt stopped her.

"Come on. It's time for the big speech," Matt told her as he pulled her to the edge of the room and stepped up to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention? We are here tonight to celebrate the launch of the new Brava by Cory Enterprises. I am very honored to introduce to you the Editor of Brava, Amanda Cory Sinclair."

The whole room erupted in applause as Amanda stepped up to the microphone. She smiled out at the crowd then looked at Cameron. He winked at her in a gesture of reassurance.

"I am very honored to be the editor of the new Brava, a magazine that my father, Mac Cory, began publishing 20 years ago. 1999 marks an important anniversary for Brava, and we celebrate that milestone with a special issue. As the world of publishing has evolved, so has Brava. Brava is a new beginning for Cory Enterprises as we strive to provide information and in-depth articles to a whole new generation. It is our intention to know our readers on a personal level by forming focus groups and inviting our readers to write guest columns in every issue. We will also have investigative articles on issues that we feel are of educational importance. I cannot and do not publish Brava alone but rely on an extensive staff of talented writers, photographers, and technical assistants. Please give them a hand."

The gathering of people clapped loudly and gave Amanda the opportunity to catch her breath before she continued. She looked at her mother as she began to speak.

"I want to thank my mother, Rachel, for having the confidence to trust me with this new venture. Without family, there is nothing. On that note, I must thank my brothers, sister, their families and my daughter, Alexandra, for always providing the support that I need. And finally I thank the person who is my foundation, who knows my heart and my soul and always knows the things to do to make my world right. You are my world. My husband, Cameron Sinclair. Thank you. I appreciate the support that each one of you is showing Cory Publishing and Brava by being here with us tonight. Thank you all."

Amanda's eyes locked with Cameron's. He felt the pride he always felt for her. There would have been a time when such a public announcement and the ensuing attention would have bothered him, but not now; not since he had married this woman.

"You don't believe that, do you?"

Cameron swung around and hugged his brother, who had that mischievous twinkle in his eye. He punched him in the stomach before turning back around to watch Amanda.

"I'm glad you made it, man. Amanda will be happy to see you."

"Something told me that my little brother might need some company tonight."

Cameron laughed and faced Gary. Gary was in a good mood. You could see it written all over his face. What had brought this on? He wasn't going to complain, and he wasn't going to ask. He hoped this was something permanent.

"Quit distracting me from my wife."

Gary laughed and ordered a mineral water from the bar.

"She sure looks beautiful tonight."

"Yeah, this is her big night, Gar. I can't tell you how many dresses she went through before she chose that one. Then she went on to the shoes. I never knew one woman could own so many pairs of shoes."

"You just sit there and smile and nod, don't you?"

"Are you kidding? My neck is sore from all the nodding I did."

Gary and Cameron laughed together. Cameron didn't want to break this spell. He liked this kind of easy conversation between them. It had been too long since it had last occurred. It was killing him not to ask what had brought about the change in him.

"What are you two laughing about?"

"Amanda, look at you. At least one of the Sinclairs cleans up good."

Gary took her hands and made her spin around slowly. Then he kissed her cheek and enfolded her in a hug. Amanda put her arms around his waist and hugged him back. She winked at Cameron over Gary's shoulder. Cameron shook his head at his brother while his back was turned.

"I'm so glad you're here, Gary."

"This is your big night, Amanda. I wouldn't be anywhere else."

Amanda smiled at him and before thinking asked, "What has put you in such a wonderful mood?"

Cameron squeezed her elbow in a silent "Why did you say that?". Amanda closed her eyes realizing what she'd done.

Gary laughed, "I filed papers to divorce Josie today."

Amanda and Cameron stared at him not knowing what to say.

"Oh, come on, you had to know it was coming. Don't look so amazed."

Amanda placed her hand on Gary's cheek in a gesture of concern.

"We're just worried about you. Are you sure?"

"It's time to move on with my life. I've done a lot of thinking these past few months, and I've made my decision. I hope you'll support me."

Cameron moved closer to Amanda, "You know we will and we do."

"This probably isn't the place to discuss it. This is your night, Amanda."

"No, Gary, you're family and whatever you need to say, say it."

The three of them moved outside to the canopied terrace. Cameron encircled Amanda's waist and pulled her against him as they watched Gary gather his thoughts.

"There are a lot of things I understand. I even understand Boca Lynda, in a way. But the lies. . . I just don't understand all of the lying, and she convinced the two of you to lie with her. . .for her. I've seen a different side of Josie. I know from talking to her that she manipulated the two of you into lying. The woman I fell in love with was nothing like that. Maybe some way, somehow, I'll see things differently, but for now I've got to break free of this darkness. You're probably wondering why I seem to be so happy. It was like the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders when I gave those papers to Tyrone. I'm closing the door on that part of my life. For the first time in a long time, I'm looking forward to the future."

"Gary, you're my family and I'll always, always be here for you. I regret my part in all of the deceptions, and I'm sorry for causing you pain," Amanda told him as she left the circle of Cameron's arms and walked to Gary.

"Amanda, I've forgiven you. We're past that."

Amanda smiled at him and hugged him, "I probably need to get back to the party. I'll leave the two of you to talk."

Amanda kissed Cameron's cheek as she walked back to the terrace doors. She turned back to them as she opened the door. At Cameron's slight nod, she disappeared back to the party.

Cameron walked toward Gary. Gary was standing at the edge of the terrace looking out over the calm waters of the bay.

"So does this mean that I've got my partner back fulltime?"

Gary laughed, "You never sugarcoat things do ya, Cam? Yeah, that's what it means. I'm sorry that I haven't been there for you."

Cameron shrugged, "I gave you space. That's what you needed. You forget sometimes that I've got the same genes. I'm really glad that you've decided to come back to work."

Gary narrowed his eyes in suspicion, "Why's that?"

"I've got a job for you, and you can start tomorrow."

Cameron continued to look at Gary seriously. Gary returned the gaze with narrowed eyes.

"Oh, yeah, what is it?"

"Tomorrow is moving day, and you've just volunteered to help."

"Moving day? You've got that place ready?"

"It's amazing what Amanda, Paulina, Alli, and Rachel can do when they put their heads together. "

Gary slapped Cameron on the back, "Welcome to the wonderful world of women."

"Yeah, Cory women."

"Come on. Let's get back to the party."

Gary and Cameron walked back into the room at the Harbor Club. Cameron quickly found Amanda in the crowd. An older man with gray hair was approaching her from the side. He narrowed his eyes as he watched the man trying to gain her full attention. There was something about him that he didn't like. He was across the room in three long strides.

"Ms. Cory, I'm George Weston. My secretary told me that you had called several times and had said that I could contact you here tonight. I believe my client, Dr. Hale, is willing to talk with you."

Amanda started to smile at the lawyer when she glimpsed a quick movement of black out the corner of her eye. She turned sharply and looked into the blazing, angry eyes of her husband.
