Sleepless in Bay City

(Author's note: Okay, this is my new story and I just want to give a little introduction to it. This story picks up immediately right where "The Tie That Binds" left off. I'll deal with the aftermath of everything that went on in that story in this story. Matt Cory will also play a critical role in this story. It will eventually get much lighter than the previous two that I wrote. Please enjoy my tale as I weave it for you! --Spin)

CHAPTER ONE

"Loose Ends"

(Cory Estates... the day after Amanda has returned from the hospital)

Amanda rolled over in bed and laughed. She had always wanted to wake up just once before Cameron and stare at him and let him know how it feels to wake up to someone watching you. But to this day, she has never made it up before him.

"What are you looking at?" she asked.

"Nothing, just you."

"Oh, so now I'm nothing, huh?" Amanda asked.

"Well," Cameron said scratching his cheek, "Since your going to trade me in for one of the New York Yankees, I'm just memorizing your face so I can remember what you look like after your gone."

Amanda laughed and rolled over towards him. "You know I was only joking! I won't ever let you go."

"Well in that case," Cameron started to say and mover closer himself when a knock came at the door.

Amanda had to smile at the look of annoyance at being interrupted on Cameron's face. She sat up in the bed and called to the visitor, "Come in!"

The door opened and Ali walked in carrying a covered tray. She smiled at her mother and walked over to Amanda. "I thought for your first day back, I would bring you breakfast in bed."

Cameron nodded approval and smiled at Ali while Amanda said, "Oh, sweetie! You didn't have to. This was so nice."

"Well, I wanted to. I was really afraid for the time you were gone," Ali confessed and Amanda smiled sympathetically.

"I know you were baby. But I'm back and I don't want you to be afraid ever again." Amanda said as she smoothed back her daughter's hair. "It's all going to be okay now, I don't want you to look back."

"You know kid, we're going to remember all of this lovey-dovey concern when it's time for you to baby-sit when your brother.."

"Sister," Amanda immediately cut in.

"Comes along," Cameron finished up. He lifted the lid to see only one steaming plate of pancakes and bacon. Only one glass of orange juice and one mug of hot chocolate. "Kid... where is mine?"

Ali looked up at him. "Cameron, there are 15 burnt pancakes, about ten pieces of under done and 5 pieces of over done bacon and orange rinds and hot chocolate mix in the sink. I'm lucky I got just one breakfast that you can eat out of the mess in the kitchen, let alone 2." Ali said with her eyes wide and a toss of her hair.

Amanda laughed while Cameron just shrugged and tried to keep the hurt look on his face and the smile off. Ali reached down and snatched a piece of bacon while Amanda started to eat her breakfast. "So what happens now?" Ali asked.

"What happens with what?" Amanda asked.

"What happens with Joise and stuff? Is there going to be a trial? And what happens to that guy who tried to snatch me from the stable?"

Cameron sat up and started to speak, but Amanda got there first. "Well hopefully, Josie will go to jail for a long, long time and that the little punk who helped her will go with her." Amanda said and took a bite of pancake and concentrated on not spitting it out. She chewed and crunched down on what she could only hope was an egg shell.

"Well, um, I needed to tell you something about that Amanda," Cameron started. He sat up further in bed and looked over at them. "Actually you should hear this too Ali." Cameron went to get out of bed and realized he wasn't wearing anything but his shorts so he motioned to Ali to cover her eyes and with an exasperated sigh, turned away while he pulled on a pair of sweats. Ali turned around and she and her mother watched with puzzlement as Cameron paced the floor. He started to talk and then stopped. He stractched his badly-in-need-for-a-shave cheek. Ali looked at her mom and Amanda had no bigger clue than her daughter.

"Cameron, what is it? Just tell me," Amanda said. She could see that there was something wrong.

"Something," Cameron began, "Something happened when Gary and I were little boys that I never told you about. It happened a long time before Mom or even Pop died. Pop started drinking really, really bad at one point and it was much worse than it had ever been and there was a chance for one of us to get out. Mom found a..." Cameron sighed and paused for a minute to rub his face with his hands. "Mom found a convent that could take in one boy. She tried to find a place for all of us, but they could only take one little boy."

Cameron paused again and Amanda prodded on. "Who went, you or Gary?"

"Well, that was what I never told you about Amanda. When we were about 10 and 8 years old, my mom... God, I don't know how to say this. It's been so long since I've talked to anybody about it." Cameron started in.

"Cameron just tell us. It's can't be that bad," Ali said.

"The boy who was in the barn.... when we were little, my mom had another baby." Cameron looked up and saw the looks of shock on the faces of his family. He knew though that he couldn't stop now. "After the baby was born, Pop went worse on the bottle. He really started doing.." Cameron looked over at Ali who was hanging on his every word. "Well, it doesn't matter. He started talking crazy and about killing the kid and stuff like that. When my mom found the place at the convent, we all agreed that it was best to send him away so he could be safe."

"Cameron, why didn't you ever say anything to me about this?" Amanda wanted to know, not out of anger, but out of concern.

"When I saw the kid in the barn, after I tackled him, I knew that I knew him from somewhere. But I couldn't place it. That night, the night before you disappeared," Cameron had to pause to let the anger that he had for himself for leaving Amanda alone boil down. "I had a dream with this voice. I got Gary because I still wasn't sure if it was a dream or what. Gary confirmed what I thought and then he pieced the rest of the puzzle together. Ma had a fight with the old man the night she was to take the baby to the convent, so Gary had to take her to the hospital. You have to understand that we had a very small amount of time to work with. They only had room for him right now and if we didn't act, then we would lose our window of opportunity. So after they left, I took the baby and left and went to the convent. I never told you because I didn't remember it. When I brought Gary in to tell me what I felt, he told me about how when he and Mom came back from the hospital, the old man and I were fighting and I hit my head. I must have blocked it out."

"Cameron, I don't want to seem unsympathetic, but what does all this have to do with the kid from the barn and prosecuting him?" Amanda asked.

"The boy from the barn is Tucker. He's the baby that we tried to hide from my father. Tucker is my brother," Cameron said and waited nervously for a reaction.

Amanda and Ali sat there dumbfounded and not really knowing what to say. Ali broke through first. "He's your brother?"

"Yeah," Cameron said.

"But how did Josie find out about any of this?" Amanda wanted to know.

"That, now that we're still unsure about. Tucker never actually met Josie, he went through a contact to do what she wanted," Cameron replied.

"Who was the contact?" Amanda asked.

"Look, I don't want you to worry about any of this, I want you to get some rest.." Cameron started in.

"No!" Amanda shouted. "Look, I know that you were both scared for me and worried, but I was the one who was laying in the dark on a cold floor wondering if I was going to die there alone. So don't tell me to rest and don't try to protect me. I want to know who was involved and I want to know now!"

Cameron could see that there was no way to dissuade Amanda to find out who was in on all of it. He didn't want to make her more upset than she was. "All right. I guess you have a right to know what went on. Tucker gave us a description of who he saw face to face when he was given instructions. He cut a deal in exchange for giving a sketch. When the artist was done, his picture was one of Iris." He looked at Amanda for a minute.

Ali reached over and held her mom's hand as Amanda sat there in shock. Her sister. Iris, even though they had never really gotten along much, they were still sisters and she had helped with her kidnapping. Her kidnapping that could have led to her death. "I just, I can't believe it. I mean, we were never really close, but we are still family. How could she do this to me?"

"This is why I didn't want to tell you, I didn't want to upset you with any of this," Cameron said, shaking his head.

"I'm not upset. I'm not," Amanda said. "I just can't believe it, that should could do that to me."

"Mom, we know all we need to know right now, please get some rest," Ali said.

Amanda turned to Ali, ready to say once again that she didn't need any rest, but she could see that she was upsetting her daughter by being disconcerted. So instead Amanda managed a smile and laid back down on the pillow. "Okay, I will calm down after a couple more questions. And I promise not to get upset okay, baby?" Ali smiled back a little so Amanda went on with her questions to Cameron. "Okay, Cam, now I understand about Tucker being your brother and all, but why would he go along with this?"

Ali looked up and wondered the same thing. Cameron took a deep breath and repeated to them what Tucker had told him.

"Tucker, we sent you away to protect you from the old man," Cameron said. He couldn't understand why this boy was so angry at them. Hadn't they done the best that they could for him? They had gotten him out of the house after all.

"Oh, real bang up job you did Cameron! You too, Gar. The next day, Pop came over to the convent and took me back." Tucker said.

"Pop found you?" Gary asked, astonished. Himself, Cameron and their mother had worked so hard to keep the secrets about sending Tucker away and to where.

"Yep he found me. And instead of bringing me home, you want to know what he did with me? He sold me. I was sent to work in a factory when I was six years old, living in a room with dozens of other kids. So real great job you did."

After repeating what Tucker had told him and Gary, Cameron just shrugged. "I guess he blames us for what happened. He holds us responsible."

"Well, that's not fair at all," Ali snorted. Cameron smiled down at her and even Amanda was pleased that her daughter was sticking up for Cameron. "Well, what is he going to do now?"

"Tucker?" Cameron asked.

"Yeah."

"I don't know yet about that. The DA, cut him a deal, but we have to see what that does and such. I don't know what happens next."

Ali looked over at her mom and Amanda sat deep in thought for a minute until Ali blurted in. "Well?"

"What?" Amanda wanted to know.

"You promised you would get some rest," Ali said.

"Yeah, you promise," Cameron put in before Amanda could start to protest.

"But, but," Amanda said helplessly.

"No, but's," both Cameron and Ali said in unison. They whisked away the empty breakfast dishes and Amanda was tucked in before she knew it. Ali opened the door to exit after kissing her mom and nearly collided with Matt.

"Sorry, Ali, I was just about to knock on the door," Matt said as he smiled at all in the room.

"Hey Matt," Cameron said.

Amanda smiled up at her brother as he came around to hug her as she still sat on the bed. "Shouldn't you be resting?" Matt asked.

"Thank you," Cameron said as Ali just laughed and took the breakfast tray down to the kitchen. "She should be resting, but of course she's not."

"I want to visit with my brother," Amanda said.

"I promise not to keep her too long," Matt said.

Cameron started to protest, but Amanda cut him of. "While Matt stays here with me, why don't you go and see how your brothers are doing?"

"Did you say brothers?" Matt asked, totally confused.

Cameron looked over at Matt and just shrugged. "Amanda will fill you in on what ever she thinks you need to know. Your right though," he said to Amanda. "I should go and see how Gary and Tucker are both doing. I really haven't seen much of Gary since the day at the hospital."

"You don't think he's..." Amanda asked.

"Drinking?" Cameron finished for her. "I haven't seen him, but I know for a fact he's not doing that. He's not home, he's been staying with Felicia since they arrested Josie. He hasn't left her side and she called me a few days ago to tell me not to worry about alcohol."

"Well, thank God for that," Amanda said.

"Yeah, but your right, I need to see him," Cameron said. "Are you going to stay with her until I come back?"

"I'm not an baby!" Amanda protested, but she was ignored.

"I give you my word that she will not be left alone," Matt said.

"Thank you," Cameron sat next to her and leaned down to tie up his shoe.

"Want me to do that for you?" Amanda asked in a sarcastic tone, mocking the first time that they had ever met in the park when Cameron tied her shoe.

"Nope," Cameron said, refusing to take the bait. "Your supposed to be resting, and tying shoes would involve work. And being an invalid person, not to mention a spoiled Princess, you just can't handle work right now."

"I swear, sometimes, if I knew that by going to the park that night I would be stuck with you for the rest of my life, I would have gone shoe shopping instead," Amanda said and turned away, not letting him kiss her good-bye.

Cameron smiled and Cameron around and tickled her and she had to turn to him. He kissed her good-bye. "I won't be long."

"Don't be," Amanda said as she got a hold of him around the back of the neck. "Since I'm stuck here in bed, I want to go over some more plans for the carriage house."

"I'll be back in a couple of hours," Cameron said and left, nodding to Matt.

Amanda watched the door close behind him and Matt watched his sister. "You know, that man was almost impossible to live with while you were gone."

"Hmmm, and what about you? Did you miss me?" Amanda teased.

"Of course and I'm mad that you didn't even think to call any of us and tell us that you were locked in that basement," Matt joked.

"Sorry, there was a pay phone, but I didn't have a quarter," Amanda shot back.

"Well, I'll forgive you if you fill me in on what Cameron and you were talking about."

Amanda took a deep breath and recounted to Matt the entire story, well as much as she knew anyway, from start to finish. At the end, Matt was sitting in the chair on the other side of the room shaking his head.

"Your telling me that that kid is Cameron's long lost brother?"

"Pretty far fetched, but true huh?" Amanda said.

"I just don't... I can't believe it," Matt shook his head again. "How are Cameron and Gary dealing with this?"

"Well, Gary is staying with Felicia so he won't drink and I guess he can't bear to go back to the house after everything has fallen apart with his life. And for Cameron, well I just don't know yet how he is dealing with it." Amanda sighed. She shook her head and mentally tried to cheer up for just a little bit. "But I don't want to talk about any of that now. I want to talk about my little niece. How's Jasmine doing?"

Matt brightened and then faltered for just a second. If Amanda had not known her brother so well, then she probably wouldn't have noticed the ever so slight change. She didn't say anything about it and just listened how Jasmine had walked with Lila the first time the other day. Matt promised to show her the video that Cass had made of it later. Amanda still didn't say anything about how her brother was hiding his disappointment at not being able to be at this monumental moment in his child's life. She was about to when the door opened and her visitor was overcome with joy at seeing her that she cried.

Amanda and Paulina hugged while Matt handed his other sister a tissue. "Sorry, sorry," Paulina scolded herself. "You know me and the water works."

"It's okay," Amanda laughed and they hugged again.

"I'm just so glad to see you and know that your all right," Paulina said and handed Amanda a tin.

"What's this?" Amanda asked as she opened it up. She cut a caper of delight as she stared down at what looked to be three dozen peanut butter chunk double chocolate and walnut cookies. "I'll have to hide these form Ali and Cameron!"

"Well, I was just so happy to hear that everything is fine with you and your baby that I just had to get you something and I thought what better way to cheer you up than with cookies. I remember when I was pregnant with Dante..."

"Whoa! Hold the phone there Paulina!" Matt said. "When women start talking about pregnancy, that is my cue to exit." Amanda and Paulina laughed as Matt ran towards the door with his ears plugged.

Amanda smiled wistfully after her brother and Paulina picked up on that immediately. "Your worried about him too aren't you?" she asked.

"It just seems like... before you came in, he was telling me about how Jasmine took her first steps and he didn't say it, but I know that he was crushed that he wasn't there. It just seems like since Lila and Cass have gotten married, that he's so lonely," Amanda said.

"I know what you mean," Paulina nodded in agreement. "He comes into the restaurant a lot more than usually, just to chat. Which is fine and everything, but I do think that he's lonely."

"What can we do about it, though? I think that the kind of lonely he's feeling, is the kind that family can't fix," Amanda said. And both of them, deep in thought stared at the door which Matt had just exited through as if the solution to Matt's loneliness would appear there. And it did. Amanda smacked her hand on the bed cover and Paulina jumped.

"What?" Paulina said.

"Matt is lonely. He needs someone. Not his family, but a girlfriend," Amanda shouted.

"A girlfriend," Paulina smiled and nodded. "Yeah, your right, that is just what he needs."

"And it's up to us as his sisters to find her for him," Amanda smiled, hatching a plan as she spoke.

(Felicia's Penthouse)

Cameron hesitated only a moment and then knocked on the door to the penthouse where his brother was temporarily staying and then gave a robust knock on the door. Felicia answered a moment later and Cameron was welcomed in by a warm hug. He stifled a cough and a sneeze as a few feathers from Felicia's enormous pink boa went up his nose and down his throat.

"Well, hello, what news do you bring of your lovely wife?" Felicia said.

"Amanda is fine and so is the baby," Cameron said. "I don't want to be rude or anything, but..."

"You want to see your brother," Felicia finished for him. "Your not being rude and you can go right in to see him. He's in there," Felicia pointed to the door that went off the living room.

"Thank you for understanding," Cameron said standing up. "In a few days, why don't you come on over and see..."

"Ah, Cameron, welcome to Felicia's humble home," Sergi said, gliding into the room. "Are you joining us for breakfast?" Sergi, in his fast and bustling manner, didn't wait for a response from him and whirled to face Felicia. "What do you want me to make for our little breakfast?" Once again, not waiting to hear an answer, whirled back to face Cameron. "How is your wife? Felicia and I are both concerned for her. Is she at home resting in bed like a sack of broccoli?"

Felicia smiled slightly and taped Sergi on the shoulder. "Potatoes Sergi."

"Oh you want to have potatoes for breakfast," Sergi said. "Is that okay with you Cameron?"

"Ahh......" Cameron started to say.

"No, Sergi. Amanda is like a sack of potatos," Felicia said.

"Felicia," Sergi said looking shocked and nervously glancing at Cameron. "I know that Amanda is going to have a baby and because of that she will get much larger," whirling around to face Cameron, "Lovely as ever, but larger," whirling back around to face Felicia, "But to compare her to a lumpy sack of potatoes in front of her husband is rude."

"No, Sergi, what I meant was," Felicia just sighed. "Your right, it wasn't funny. I apologize Cameron. You can go and see Gary and tell Amanda that I will stop by and see her later this week."

"Will do Felicia. It was uh, nice to see you again Sergi," Cameron said backing out of the room and down the hall. He shook his head and laughed softly to him self as he heard Sergi rattle on some more about potato's.

He got to the room where Felicia had directed him to and knocked on the door. A gruff voice told him to come in and he did. Cameron opened the door and walked into the room. Gary was still laying in bed and Cameron could see it had been a little while before he had gotten up and taken a shower or shaved. Gary looked over at Cameron, while Cam seated himself on on the couch across from the bed.

"Do me a favor all right?" Gary asked.

"Name it."
"I don't want to talk about her. I don't even want to mention her name."

"Fine by me," Cameron said.

"Did you tell Amanda about the drugs and what she did to you that night?"

"I thought you didn't want to talk about her."

"I just want to know this one thing," Gary said. "Did you tell Amanda?"

"No."

"You should," Gary replied,

"Well, maybe in a little while I will. Right now I just want her to rest and be healthy." Cameron said. He looked down at his hands and cracked his knuckles. "Well, if you don't want to talk about certain subjects, can we at least talk about Tucker?"

"Yeah, I guess. When will he get out?"

"Well," Cameron started, "I talked to Joe a few days ago and he has to stay in jail until the DA formally pardon's him next week at the hearing. But we should go and see him today or tomorrow and figure out where he's going to live and stuff."

"What if he still wants nothing to do with us?" Gary asked, rolling over on his side to face his brother.

"We can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to do, but we should at least go and give him the option of moving in with me."

"With you?" Cameron asked.

"I have to go home sometime and if Tucker wants to come and stay with me and help get the ghosts out I would like to have him there."

"That's a good thing your gonna do Gary," Cameron nodded approvingly.

"You want to see him tomorrow with me?"

"Sounds good, tomorrow it is."
