Clive Robertson, SUNSET BEACH's Ben, On Tying The Knot With His Wife
And Possibly Untying One With Daytime

Clive Robertson is sitting at the Sherman Oaks eatery, Stanley's ready to tell all about his May wedding to Libby Purvis, when something - someone, actually catches his eye: Kevin Costner. It's not that Robertson's starstruck, it's just that weeks earlier, the Oscar-winning director and actor showed up at Libby's bachelorette party (Costner is a friend of a friend). At this particular moment, SUNSET BEACH's Ben can't decide whether he should introduce himself.

Opting against table-hopping, Robertson gets down to business. "The wedding was out of this world," he smiles. Literally - he and his fiancée trekked to Necker Island, a private island owned by Virgin mogul Richard Branson, to exchange "I do's." "It's one of these paradise places that should be on some poster," says the actor, "with all those wonderful, white sandy beaches and that amazing turquoise water, and there is a reef surrounding the island, as well. Very idyllic."

Of course, even paradise is at the mercy of Mother Nature: The couple had planned to marry last fall, but a hurricane quite literally blew those plans out of the water. "So we waited," says the actor, who rescheduled the island nups for a week in May.

The wait was worth it. "We managed to get the master suite," he smiles. "We had the top floor, with this enormous balcony, a sunken Roman Jacuzzi-type bath and this incredible four-poster bed. It was just amazing." They said their vows at a spot called Sunset Point. "We brought a registrar over from another island on a boat, and she came up and did it - just the two of us," reveals Robertson. Well, if you don't count the resort worker who videotaped the event.

So how does it feel to be married, now that he's back in the real world? "We've been together and lived together for a long time," says Robertson, "but it is a different feel to a relationship when you are married." And that nifty ring he now sports on his left hand? "I have worn one of those before [on the show]," he shares. "But the ring you now see on me on the show is my real wedding ring."

Wedding bands were about all the couple expected to be showing off, having planned such a small wedding. "Because we went off and did it on our own, we weren't expecting any gifts," shrugs Robertson. "People have been giving us these gifts, which has been an unexpected pleasure."

More pleasure is in store when the newlyweds take their overdue honeymoon in Italy and England. The trip couldn't be coming at a better time for the actor, who says he needs a respite from his character, who he confesses has become a little boring.

"You never get to see what Ben is thinking," sighs Robertson. "Furthermore, I never thought I was a weak character, but having Ben just chase Meg and Maria around the room saying, "'I'm sorry,' is pretty dull."

Robertson hopes that Ben will get to interact "like he used to" with more characters on the show, and was encouraged by his recent interplay with Shawn Batten (Sara). "I've never had scenes with her before," he notes. "And it was great, it was really great. Because I was working with someone different, it had a whole different slant."

Playing evil twin Derek offered a different slant, too, but Robertson has no desire to recreate that role. "It was good fun, but at the same time, it really wasn't," he confides. "They were both front-burner, and I just don't think I could handle it. I was going slightly insane last year doing that."

But frustration with his role is only part of the reason Robertson is considering not re-signing with BEACH when his contract is up this fall. "To be honest with you, I'm at a point where I would like to do other things," he reflects. "I mean, there are so many things that I am not able to do in daytime. I'm not knocking daytime because it has been very good to me. But you don't have the time to invest to make it what it could be. And that frustrates me."

"I came straight from London and got this show," he continues, "and I was very grateful to be given the opportunity of getting a start out here. I did have the opportunity to do a pilot earlier in the year. But for one reason or another, they wouldn't allow me to do it. There are things out there. We'll just have to wait and see."
